View Full Version : Games that Deserve Remakes

I would just say "Go" but some folks may take the word remake the wrong way. I mean good remakes like New Super Mario Brothers, Prince of Persia on XBLA, and the upcoming Bionic Commando Rearmed.
Now... Go!
I'll say the Sonic series. Sonic - Sonic and Knuckles to be exact.

Chrono Trigger
FFVI
Sonic 3/Knuckles
Suikoden II
Star Wars: Jedi Knight
Castlevania II
Shadowgate
Warcraft I/II
Clock Tower
Ultima IV-VI
Also, if someone could make a clone of Dwarf Fortress II (or remake it) with proper graphics, that'd be awesome.

A remake? Hell no. However, I've been saying for years that the only way to revive the Sonic franchise is in the form of 2D sidescrollers that run like the old Sonic games, with the exception of far more levels and more elaborate art. Sell these games for $15/$20 over XBLA and gamers will eat it up.
The last thing Sonic needs is another poorly done 3D game. It just doesn't work.

Sonic Advance series, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure... they're already making more 2D games, just on portables.

Yeah, on Nintendo handhelds. :D Wasn't the Sonic Advance series just a repackaging of the Genesis Sonic games?

That's what I get for not reading the post. I see a thread with "Remakes" in the title, I see the Sonic series, and the 10 year old in me goes crazy.
I think that in about 15 years, Halo should be remade. It's multiplayer should be updated every generation of consoles.
Shadow of the Colossus should be remade, but no new monsters, or anything should be added. Just make them bigger and all that.

TIE-Fighter?
I could do with a Rogue-like Angband clone except with fully-realized graphics and no dumbing-down of the key commands or options or item selection or spells...which would probably be the most absurd thing to ask of a developer ever.

Hell yes! The only thing close to it in the the last 10 years is the Star Wars Galaxies space expansion.

They did rerelease the original Sonic late in the GBA's life, though. It was met with poor reviews. That's what he's thinking of.
I'll put it out. 3D HD Remake of Sonic CD. Like PoP Classic. 2D gameplay/3D graphics.

Mega Man 2: After seeing the awesomeness that was Bionic Commando: Rearmed yesterday, one cannot deny the potential awesomeness of a PSN/XBLA remake of Mega Man 2 (as if that were possible already). I don't know about how Co-op would work in the Mega Man universe (at least before the introduction of Zero in Mega Man X), but it should at least be considered. As long as Capcom includes the awesome Level Designer, the ability to play as any of the bosses you have defeated, and the Challenge Mode from the original PSP Mega Man Powered Up there is absolutely nothing that can stop the Mega Man 2 remake from being one of the best games of all time!

I like what they did with FFT, but I wish they had gone the extra distance. They did soundly demonstrate that a 10yr-old game can still have legs without being remade. But that would have been my vote.
Fallout and the Infinity Engine games could all use some graphical touch ups.
Final Fantasy 6 & 7
Maniac Mansion & Day of the Tentacle

If a game is really good, then it hardly needs a remake. Sure, some remakes are great, most suck though. Also, many of the games listed thus far (Sonic CD, Megaman II, etc.) are still really good games that hold up well. Why fuck around with a good thing. Megaman II in particular, is a game hardly needing a remake, considering it is considered one of the greatest games of all time by many fans and critics.
That's not to say good games shouldn't get remakes. Some games age poorly (The Twin Snakes remake of the original MGS was welcome for that reason alone) while others could use a revival (like the Prince of Persia...that series was dead and then the remake it and put it back on the map). And some would benefit from newer, and better tech (X-Wing vs. Tie-fighter). But what about games that sucked but could have been so damn great (Advent Rising)? Don't forget those types of games too.
Me? I'd like to see these games get remade the most, and I'll briefly explain why for each.
Advent Rising: This game had so much potential going for it and had all the right things behind it. It even had one of the best OSTs to ever hit gaming. Sadly, it turned out a glitchy mess. I'd love to see a talented team, maybe Ubisoft Montreal, grab it and rebirth it into what it should've been.
X-Wing vs. Tiefighter: Flight combat games are fairly rare nowadays. I'd love to see this done up right. It'd be fresh all over again and today's new tech would only serve it well. I'd say get Factor 5 to handle it, but after Lair...yech.
Kid Icarus: Such a great game back in the day, with mechanics that blend Metroid and Zelda with such precision. Let Retro Studios handle this baby.
Castlevania III: This is a game that some at Konami have already thought about remaking, and the Castlevania series could use another SotN-esque renaissance. This game could be the best platform for that. Hell, just some good decent changes to the formula would be nice. Portrait and Dawn of Sorrow did it, and I'd know an amazing 3D Castlevania can and should be done.
Vagrant Story: Remake or sequel, it doesn't matter which. The game is brilliant, but has been forgotten by both Square and even many gamers. It deserves a rebirth.
Golgo 13: Do I really have to explain why? C'mon, you know it'd be kickass.
I'll list more as I think of them.

I went pretty old school on this one..
Zork... if they can create a more intelligent parser.
Robotron (basically geometry wars but hey!)
Oregon Trail isn't this a required course in schools?
Gears of war
Crackdown
COD4
Mass Effect
Are we listing sequels, decent games or games that should be remade? Because I'm not so sure you can tell the difference...;)

SaGa Frontier
Vagrant Story (well, rather sequel, but indeed it's an almost forgotten jRPG)
Deus Ex...just like Xwing vs Tiefighter, all it needs is new, normalmapped assets. Don't change a thing about the gameplay.
So maybe that's an update, not a remake, but still.
Mechwarrior 3. MW4 was all wrong...it just felt like you were playing with little toys; in MW3 you still felt as if you were controlling huge battletank robots. With todays tech, you could have some awesome missile effects, destructible buildings...it could be so awesome playing an elemental, hiding in the ruins :)

TIE-Fighter?
Thirded!
PC Gamer voted Tie Fighter #2 on their greatest PC games of all time a few years back. The story for that game was amazing...
If you've never played it, think about it this way: how good a pilot do you have to be to beat an X-Wing with a wimpy 2-laser, no shields TIE Fighter? Or to take on a Corellian Freighter with a slow, no shields TIE Bomber?

Dragon Warrior would be cool, making combat into epic looking battles like a cartoony Kingdon Under Fire would be great and help introduce people into one of the most overlooked Saturn Games.
Speaking of Saturn games, Burning Rangers would benefit from being remade on hardware that could match what they were trying to do with the title. Realistic fire behaviour and a draw distance of more than 3 feet would be great.

OK I gave this some more thought -- inspired by the retro games thread.
- M.U.L.E. I mean... come on. It's M.U.L.E. for fuck's sake!
- A worthy successor to Master of Orion 2. MoO3 did not happen. It just did not. And I refuse to believe otherwise.
- Starcon 2. Now that's gold right there.
- Dark Forces. I'm not a FPS fan by any stretch of the imagination, but there's a certain something about Dark Forces that made me play it 5 times.
There have been multiple attempts at remaking XCom and they all failed. So I've given up hope on that one.

Ia agree and disagree, Shadow of the Colossus should be remade with next-gen graphics, and all the monsters that were taken out should be put back in. Have you ever seen all the amazing monsters that never made it into the game, or were taken out because of technical limitations?

The two games I want remade are:
Star Flight 1 & 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starflight). they are possibly the best space adventure games ever made.
Maniac Mansion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maniac_Mansion) needs a nice 3D point-and-click-adventure reboot.

This. I don't care what the creators and others say, giving the game at least proper tileset graphics, and a mouse interface, would increase playability 1000%. Really, the same goes for just about every roguelike out there; Drop the archaic interface. There's a reason we moved to real GUIs and mice, from text based interfaces.

Perfect Dark
Ghost in the Shell SAC - needs updating with new engine and gameplay
Wing Commander III
Original Rainbow 6 - not Vegas style
The Regiment - only 2 years old but an incredible shooter that needs better netcode and updated features.
Vietcong (PC Version) - don't change anything except graphics, animations, and AI tactics and pathfinding
I would mention some of the older Star Wars titles but they are just getting ridiculous now. Force powers as seen in Return of the Jedi were right on target. Now it is too much. What is next, flying around in space with no suit hurling moons and asteroids at one another? Bigger is not better and is a poor substitute for a good story and intriguing gameplay.

Jagged Alliance/2. Just make some pretty graphics and leave eveything else the same.
DOOM - Doom3 was not a remake, it was wrong. Hell was too short. It wasn't spooky enough all the way thru. More pretty graphics please, and much more shotgun and chainsaw action.
Fallout/2 - leave the gameplay and make it pretty.
Chrono Trigger.

From my understanding, NSMB was a remake in the same sense that Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was a remake to the original PoP. They're not remakes in the traditional sense, but more like re-imaginings with today's tech.

Panzer Dragoon Saga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_Dragoon_Saga) (or any panzer dragoon really)
from wikipedia - "Although the game is frequently requested to be re-released on a modern format by fans, there is apparently no interest from within Sega in re-issuing it for any console whatsoever. Team leader Yukio Futatsugi has also confirmed that the original code for the game has been lost, adding further weight to the unlikelihood of a port."

Kef he knew what I meant. Using today's tech to re-imagine yeasteryears games. Some people are listing what sounds like, "I want a good next gen sequel." I was thinking bout 8-bit/16-bit 2D games. We liked the gameplay but now they can do much more. Bionic commando adds co-op, new weapons and all kinds of other cool shit. NSMB had like all his combined moves and new ones in a environment much like the older games. PoP XBLA really didn't change much at all I can't tell. I mean if they had changed the combat and added a few of his Sands of Times moves it would have been different, but I doubt any one would of turned there nose up at it.

I wish they had made it closer to the original. Shooting and sawing up swarms of demons would've been more fun than the "Boo! I'm scary because you didn't expect me to pop out of the ceiling when you grabbed that ammo clip!"

Tie Fighter or X-Wing, but please don't think of Tie Fighter vs X-wing as a real game. It contains nothing of the superb story of the originals.
Ultima 7 would be a nice place to start.

A new Grim Fandango would do me right as well.
And for final thought a remade Dark Forces. Don't even change anything but graphics and I'll buy it time now.

Maybe it's just because I've played them for a few years now (although a few years after the games came out), but I don't see the UI as being that bad at all. I guess it would be nice to have a hotkey for the look and use functions, rather than having to use the drag menu, but other than that I can't think of obvious improvements.

Wing Fucking Commander. 1, 2, 3, 4, *and* 5, god damnit.
I'm with you on this one, ESPECIALLY WC 1 and 2. Listen, I can understand the Tie Fighter love, but the story in the WC games was awesome, and unlike a LOT of games today, and almost all games in the past, it had a true(ish) branching storyline! If you lost battles, you could lose the entire bloody war. None of this starting the mission over crap. A lost mission was a lost mission and affected the entire game's outcome.

That game looks so familiar. Could he turn into stone? Or did he have different forms?

A decent remake of Wolfenstein 3D, in the way that the original felt, would be nice. I didn't care for whatever that 'Wolfenstein' game was that came out a few years ago. It just didn't feel the same.

He had different forms, yeah. It worked a little like Mega Man, you defeated a boss and you gained a new form with some of their powers. I don't know about the stone one though, I still have the cartridge, but haven't had a working SNES to play it on in over 10 years.

It was a fun game, it was hard if you wanted a challenge, and the theatre mode was the funniest thing I've ever read. I've searched for those movies in vain.

Haha, yeah, I really need to get homebrew on one of those. Probably the DS, since I won't have to actually mess with any firmware.
