After reading in my local newspaper in louisville ky about how our idiot mayor instead of hiring more cops to deal with our skyrocketing murder rate, he does what? Is looking to passing a bill that makes idileing your car a ticketable offense.

Then i got to looking around on google and found this.

Who lives in california and what are you going to do about it? Your going to take to the streets right? What a f.u.c.k.i.n.g joke.

Politicians being completely off-base when it comes to what their constituents really want and need?

What's new?

You can say fucking here you know. Well, it doesn't sound very American. I would expect it from this country, but in the US there's supposed to be a far better enshrinement of rights etc.

i am almost positive a few states already made this illegal. its great that I have to go outside in freezing temperatures, in a cold ass car, with no heat for 5 minutes, and just crank it up and drive off.

Yep, it's illegal to leave an unattended car running up here in Minnesota. The law is more because there is usually a rash of stolen cars for people that leave their car running during the winter. Many usually do what phantomhitman said.

Now there are ways around the law, the biggest being automatic starters and starting your car and locking it (and use an extra set of keys to open it back up). Police are supposed to go up to your car and discern whether the car is locked and whether there are keys in the ignition before giving you a ticket.

My favorites are baggy pants and novelty lighter laws.

I actually think it's a good idea, if you live in an area where there are constant brownouts. Businesses would have to be onboard for this too, otherwise it's not a good idea.

Interesting. They are supposedly trying to start something like that in my area this summer. Only things are... it's voluntary and you get a little compensation if you volunteer.

We're signed up.

I say to hell with this kind of thing. Volunteer is fine by me, but what about the odd cases that come up? Sick relative visiting, especially stuffy apartment, using the stove, etc. Plus, I have dealt with places where the thermostat got busted and it sucks balls. What if it suddenly dialed everyone up due to a bug? Also, if you want to pay for that much electric, power to you. They should really try and adress the issue of not enough power by supplying more. How about no AC in any of the state gov't buildings? Bet they'll be nice and chilly. Fuckers.

Oh, but the car idling law is a bit screwy. I think it would be bad enough if your shit got stolen, but I guess it's to deter you from putting yourself in that situation. I'd like to see how much in tax payer's money has been spent in tracking down stolen vehicles. Maybe that's why?

Meh, I think it's a good thing. But then again I'm a godless Canadian who realizes his constitutional rights don't include anything about how high I can set my air conditioning on a consumer product.

That's when it's time to turn on the NON-thermostatically-controlled air conditioner.

Or else get in the car and crank the A/C, using up gallons of gas rather than kW of electricity.

But really, this sounds like a bad fix to a serious problem. Maybe increase the standards for air conditioner efficiency and other appliances, increase power production, try tiered electricity pricing (if you pass X-many kWh for the month, you start paying a higher rate) to get people to conserve more overall...

Eventually they have to realize that they need more power there, it's the most populous state in the union and has a population greater than that of Canada.

Technically, the Constitution spells out the powers of the Federal Government... Anything not listed in the Constitution is assumed as a right of the people. The Bill of Rights just ENNUMERATES a bunch of rights, to make 100% sure that later generations don't fuck things up too bad.

State governments, actually, have far more control.

MY problem with this legislation, is that it sounds mandatory. Sorry, not big on letting other people tell me how to live. :-) Same with the idle car laws. Hell, People get on the local cops, ALL THE TIME for leaving their cars idling in the winter and summer. (heat/AC).

About the thermostat thing, it's total BS. Such a waste of time and resources. Let the electric company reward people who use less energy by giving them breaks and making the people who are a drain pay more. Simple as that.

California needs to build a few more fucking power plants and get over their holier than thou environmentalist bullshit. Nuclear power is a clean, safe power source, and there is no reason that these plants shouldn't be popping up like zits on a treenagers face in Cali. That'd solve the brownout issue for sure. But nooooooo, Cali has to legislate radio controlled thermostats. then thay have to build the infrastructure to control them, and at the end of the day, 10 years down the road, there still isn't enough electricity to go around, because the population keeps growing and using more electricity.

If more people were politically active, we'd have much better leaders.

Go out to a bar this weekend. Try to strike up a conversation about politics with an average person. Most people out there simply don't give a shit. It's a shame.

Agreed. Frankly, this green shit is getting out of hand. I'm all for environmental education, protection, etc., but it needs to be tackled with a practical and open mind. Not bullshit like this.

If it weren't for the Chernobyl scare, nuclear would take right the fuck off. Clean, you can make it a buck of it (which is the real issue, finding working and efficient alternate fuels is a farce, they already exist in a myriad of fashions), and it also eliminates the problem with left over nuclear waste (thanks Cold War!), the same waste that can't be properly destroyed or used.

I'd be all for the Nuclear option, but it doesn't look like it'll happen for a while, if at all.

True, but like most matters of science, the public is painfully misinformed..
