Guitar Hero III has taken over some social scenarios lately and I despise it. A gamer all my life, Ive largely avoided this stupid guitar rhythm game craze until lately when it got so in everyones face. My dilemma is now non gamer social situations are practically revolving around this party game, casual girl gamer moms are hitting notes on hard and I was barely able to struggle with medium. So I've had enough, if everyones going to go ga ga and wannabe rock stars with this game then its my duty as a gamer to get better.
I picked up the PC version and a guitar, it runs beautifully and is identical from what I can tell to the 360 version. In a few days I went from total noob to being able to finish career mode on medium so I feel like Ive made some progress however its still mind bogglingly hard at times and the harder levels even more so. Can anyone offer a link to a well written game guide or advanced tips to help a struggling gamer increase my skills faster and succeed on hard or even expert levels?

Strum up and down. And get used to stretching for orange.

Play Rock Band, or have everyone chip in to buy it to play it together.

Practice, practice, practice. Then practice some more. You may also want to move your hand down so your pinky finger is on the orange fret. It makes the harder difficultieseasier to beat.
Also work of your hammer-ons and pull offs.

You hate it? I'm confused, it sounds like you love it. Oh well.
Learn to use pull offs and hammer ons (are those the correct terms?).
Meaning: When a black ring note comes up, you have to strum and push the colored button, however, if the next few notes do not have a black ring around them, you only have to hit the color. This helps when you have a huge jumble of notes coming at you, which I know GH3 loves to do.
I can't think of how a guide would help. Just practice playing the songs. Play at a difficulty that you can just barely beat, and keep advancing as far as you can like that. When you hit a brick wall, go back and play a few of the now easier ones, then keep working your way up.
And get used to stretching for orange.
Ignore this. Practice being able to slide your whole hand up and down to where it needs to be to hit the buttons. "Stretching" will only get you so far.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It looks like it boils down to a lot of practice and learning to play the right way when it comes to strumming and finger positioning. I appreciate all the tips for this monstrosity of a game.

I have the PC version as well, and I do fairly well on medium but just hit a brick wall on the first hard level songs. It's a huge jump in difficulty, not only the 5th button but the notes are way faster and lots more of them.
Would be better have another level in the middle to kind of work in the 5th button with the speed and amount of notes as easy just to get used to it, then move up to the speed and amount of notes of the hard level.
In other words, I suck at Hard level.

It is, beyond a certain point. About 2/3 through Hard, it becomes fucking crazy. I heard that Guitar Hero II was the hardest till I tried GHIII on hard.
I got so frustrated, I just stopped playing it.

They made this game just too ridiculously hard. Raining Blood is fucking retarded and don't even get me started on that Dragonforce song. I can't even get to the verse because they make ya play the keys in the intro. Fucking retarded!

Always one to ask the most obvious question but what is a "hammer on"? What is a "pull off"? I do fine on easy. I'll assume that neither of these techniques are required on easy. If I play medium, the fourth button just screws me up. No, I haven't tried it very much. I'm working on it... See my post about the death of my 360 tonight. The night I brought home Rock Band. /grr!
I see the definition above about black ring notes. I've never seen anything like this. Probably for the reasons already mentioned.

Whoever suggested Rock Band, I agree completely. It is by far the superior music game.
Unless, of course, you bought GH3 for the PC because you don't have an 360/PS3
In that case, sell it and buy yourself something nice, for the PC is not the realm of the rhythm.
Being a lefty, how would I do with the Guitars on Guitar Hero or Rock Band? Is there some special adapter I would need?

Nope. you just flip the guitar over, and select the "lefty flip" option. That said, I can imagine the buttons/whammy bar being a lot more awkward for you.

You're kidding, right? I don't really consider myself great, but even I can beat both those songs on Hard (Cult of Personality on Expert is giving me hell right now). I think this is why everyone loves Rock Band so much. There's almost no difficulty, and anyone can play Expert mode and get five stars (There's a few difficult ones, but not enough). Admittedly, the drums are sweet, but the guitar part is laughable compared to Guitar Hero. I like having room to improve upwards in a game, and knowing it's going to take practice and skill to get there.

Great....Lefty's screwed over again. Thanks for the info.
Everyone loves Rockband because its a ridiculously fun party game. Guitar hero doesn't even come close to it when it comes to parties. Guitar hero is hard, and thats great. That makes the game more fun when you're on your own. Rockband is easier because it makes it more fun for the social experience. I can yell at my buddies while playing and not be completely screwed.
There are people who like difficulty, and they can have GH, and there are those who enjoy rocking out with their friends. They have Rockband.

I beat Expert Career on GH1 and GH2, and I've beaten every song but Raining Blood and Devil Went Down to Georgia on GH3 on Expert. Rock Band on guitar is much more fun than GH3 for me.
