I thought a fun idea might be to list some of the really odd and obscure NES games we remember playing as a kid. I know it sounds kind of lame innitialy, but I had some fond memories playing all of those offbeat NES games.

Heres A few I remember:

Caveman Games
The Adventures of Dino Riki
Bad Dudes
Legacy of the Wizard

Then there was one I cannot remember the name for the life of me, but you were a little dinosaur and ran around the stage picking up eggs and avoiding cavemen, but you could get an item that let you grow into a big T-rex and eat the cavemen.

Try these at ConsoleClassix.com (http://consoleclassix.com/Nintendotitles.html), for free and legal, great way to see why these are so off the wall. Though not that crazy it's a unique game, Wall Street Kid.

Then their is the aptly named COOL WORLD!
- Mario is Missing
- Fun House
- Gumshoe
- Kid Kool
- Karnov
- Life Force
- Low G Man
- MC Kids and so many more

OH, I know what youre talking about. I think. Wait, no Im thinking of a similar game. You would eat stuff, and turn into different Dinosaurs, like a Tricerotops (Spelling), or a Terodactile

This wasn't nessicarily offbeat, but my favorite NES Game of al ltime?

Super Dodgeball. I _LOVE_ that game. I used to play it for hours, just going through and beating the game over and over. Hell I remember when I got to fight the "darkside" russians at the end of the game where the color changes, and it gets darker. Still beat the snot out of them. Always played as team USA. GO USA.

Yep, I remember that. I suppose this sort of reaction of remembering distinctly, these sorts of games, and at what timeframe in our lives we played them, shows you the power of this particular entertainment medium. I remember the colors, sounds, and gameplay to games I played as a 3 year old.

Here are a few I remember and really liked:

Robo-warrior - A weird bomberman-like game. Supposedly tied to the bomberman series somehow.

Blastermaster- A side scrolling/top down adventure game. It had a moddable car and you could hop out of it and hunt down bad guys in caves.

Flying warriors- a beat-em-up kinda thing that had you turn into a superhero and fight bosses with a kind of simplified Street Fighter system.

Gargoyles Quest II- You flew around as a devil that looks suspiciously like one of the flying red demons on Ghosts N' Goblins. It had an action RPG kind of style.

Guardian Legend- It was a top down RPGish game that was really quirky in the sense that your character was a cyborg that turned into a fighter ship and had shoot-em-up sections.

I'm sure I could come up with more if given time, but those are the few that I still remember.

It actually appeared to be in full 3D. It was a co-op game, and your object was to find each other through the maze. I remember playing it with my sister for hours. Never heard of it since.

I played both of those so much.

Snake Rattle & Roll
Conquest of the Crystal palace
Golgo 13
The Immortal
Little Nemo
Crystalis...respect! Still one of my all-time favorite NES games. :D
Base Wars...my favorite NES baseball game, with robots fighting to the death to see if one is "out".

Did anyone ever play a game called Flying Warriors? It had a weird combat system where it would highlight part of the other guy's body, and you had to input the button combo to attack that spot. Defending was the same way. But it was like pre-pre-Power Rangers. Your guys could turn into power ranger looking guys and use super attacks.
it was actually pretty damn hard. Some of the enemies' weak spots would only light up for a split second.

Really I was under the impression a good bit either played or knew what it was.

It has a lot to do with age and the gamers you know personally.
I'm not ancient, but a good deal of gamers that I know are younger than me by a handful of years. But quite a few of them didn't get into gaming until the Genesis/Super Nintendo age. Besides big name games like Mario 3, they don't know many NES games.

It's a feeling of sadness when you bring up a game like Rygar and they think you're talking about the remake. Sigh. "They made that for NES too?"

Golgo 13 was hard as hell, but then so were most NES games to me. I must've been pretty bad at gaming.

Kirby's Adventures in Dreamland (or whatever the title was) was something I picked cause I dug the cover, and it was fun...but does anyone remember the end of the game? It got all tense and creepy and weird and dark. It would be like Mickey Mouse finally getting one over on Big Pete and then finding out that Pete was controlled by flesh-eating vampires who wanted to use the steamboat to destroy the world.

There was a game that was like a strategy game. It was a war fought in a garden, using water and stuff, on a small scale. Cant remember the name but it was quite fun.

I was worried that Faxanadu and, more importantly, Clash At Demonhead would get left off this list, but it's nice to see them here.

Come to think of it, I'd kill for Clash At Demonhead on the VC. That game was so unbelievably awesome and ahead of its time.

Golgo 13 still gives me nightmares. I used to rent it from the 7-11 down the street and it took me forever to get past the first sniper mission back in the day. Another one I'd love to see on the VC.

StarTropics is somewhat obscure but it's on the VC and that means everyone can engage in some yo-yo related combat!

Blastermaster! I loved that game.

I think I played Caveman Games, but I'll have to go find it again to be sure. :)

I really liked Clash at Demonhead as well, but I've never been able to find anything to like about it since finding my cartridge again years later.

Kabuki Quantum Fighter - Don't remember how good it was, just remember whipping people with hair.

Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu - Rented once and decided to avoid all light-blue coloured carts int he future.

Edit: maybe I need to play Demonhead again based on the posts above that I missed the first time through the thread...

How did NES games rule so much?

To hazard a guess, I think back then there were so many odd games because all the companies knew there was this new system, with all this power (compared to the atari) and had no idea what would sell on it, so they just tried everything.

Case in point: Boy and His blob, Monster Party, River City Ransom.

Nowadays it's hard to break out of the standard genre conventions. Back in the day it was super cheap to develop the games so it was pretty easy to try something new and crazy to see if it could catch on.
