STRONG LINEUP OF GAMES CONTINUES NINTENDO'S MOMENTUM IN 2008
Bold 2007 Set the Stage for Broad 2008 Software Lineups for Wii and Nintendo DS
REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 16, 2008 – With their focus on fun for everyone, Nintendo's Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ systems are leading a new movement in the world of video games. Games based on brain exercises. … New experiences that surprise even core gamers. … Grandparents buying video game systems – for themselves! Surely, these are unprecedented times.
"The video game industry has never had so many new players, and they've never had so much fun," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "Our momentum is not limited to one system or one game. We're going broad and bold in 2008, with something for every member of the family."
Nintendo DS and Wii finished as the No. 1 and No. 2 best-selling systems of the year, respectively. Nintendo continues its momentum into 2008 with a strong lineup of games. In the first half of 2008 alone, more than 65 new Wii games will add to the current library of more than 195 and 80 new Nintendo DS games will add to the current library of nearly 500. Nintendo DS opens the first half of the year with games that demonstrate the breadth of the Nintendo DS library. Advance Wars®: Days of Ruin is a treat aimed squarely at core gamers, while Crosswords DS™ is for all consumers, whether they currently play games or not.
Likewise, the first half of 2008 brings a diverse array of Wii games from Nintendo, including core games like Super Smash Bros.® Brawl; games with universal appeal for gamers old and new with Mario Kart® Wii, which uses the easy-to-pick-up Wii Wheel™; and Wii Fit™, which comes with the Wii Balance Board and has appeal for new consumers well beyond the traditional video game audience. On top of all that, new downloadable WiiWare™ games will make their debut. These unique games have much lower entry barriers for developers and let consumers enjoy an incredibly diverse selection of content.
Third-party publishers also continue their strong support for Wii and Nintendo DS. Some of the innovative Wii games for the first half of 2008 include Ninja Reflex from Electronic Arts, No More Heroes™ from Ubisoft, DeBlob from THQ, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed from LucasArts and Okami from Capcom, in addition to compelling Nintendo DS games like FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: Rings of Fate from Square Enix, Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword from Tecmo and Quick Yoga Training from Ubisoft.
The following is a partial list of Wii and Nintendo DS software for the first half of 2008. Note that details are subject to change.

Thats alot of third party support for the wii. Unfortunatly, the majority will most likely be shit. At least theres SSBM and Mario Kart.....

I don't think he understands the meaning of strong. The chaff to wheat ratio on the Wii is starting to resemble that of the DS.

Having played through No More Heroes at least a dozen times last year, I can say that you are wrong sir.
And when does selling few copies in Japan judge how good a game is? Zack and Wiki sold even LESS than No More Heroes in Japan.

Wow! Its going to be a good 2 quarters for Nintendo's fans wallets!
Damn that is one helluva sad fucking list! Its like you need a good shovel to sift through the shit to get to the gold there, and there isn't much gold.
There's some games, on both Wii and DS, i can be interrest to buy if they got some good review.

Yup, it's exactly like the second year of the PS2.
Anyhow, here are some things the OP missed that people might want to watch for:
No More Heroes (GTA-like)
Baroque (JRPG)
Dragon Quest Swords (Action, First-person)
Okami (Action-Adventure)
Castle Shikigami 3 (Vertical Shooter)
Obscure: The Aftermath (Survival Horror)
Rygar (Action-Adventure)
DeBlob (Unique)
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Action)
These won't all necessarily be good games, but they are games that might interest the audience of EvAv more than the rest of the list, so watch for review scores.

Are you really going to try and say that the Wii didn't have a good first year for games? I would really have to disagree with that. Yes, there was a lot of shovelware which came out for the Wii in the FIRST YEAR of its release...tons of party games too...BUT...that first year also saw quite a few games that shined nicely: Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime Corruption, Medal of Honor Heroes 2, NiGHTS, and plenty more. I don't think you can say that there was a bad year for the Wii's first year of games with some of the quality titles that have come out. And, following in the footsteps of the PS2, its shovelware in the second year, but again with SEVERAL quality titles. And how many games do most people REALLY buy in a year that they need a shit ton of games to come out every year that are all AAA titles?

Ye gods, no.
But on topic: I think we could very easily see some real gems in that list. The main thing the Wii lacks is games with marketing behind them. Bioshock would have still been a good game, even if they hadn't been telling us about it for months beforehand. (I actually DID NOT know about it until it came out, as I had only recently gotten a 360)

If this is what you call "largely forgettable":
Armored Core 2
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Dark Cloud
Devil May Cry
Final Fantasy X
Gradius III & IV
Gran Turismo 3 A Spec
Grand Theft Auto 3
Half Life
ICO
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Kessen
Klonoa 2
Metal Gear Solid 2
Midnight Club
Onimusha
Red Faction
Ridge Racer 5
Rumble Racing
SSX
SSX Tricky
Shadow of Destiny
Shadow Hearts
Silent Hill 2
Sky Odyssey
Soul Reaver 2: Legacy of Kain
Super Bust-A-Move
Timesplitters
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Twisted Metal Black
Zone of the Enders
I'd really hate to know what you think of the 360, Wii, and PS3's first years. And yes, you know I consider the lead in to that 2nd Xmas as part of a console's first year.

Gorvi, we've been over this before. You are listing games in there that did not come out in the PS2's first year, at least in its first year in North America.
PS2 North American Release: October 26, 2000
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - December 3, 2001
Final Fantasy X - December 20, 2001
Half Life - November 15, 2001

So Kam, do you know how to read? I'm actually curious about that. I said:
And yes, you know I consider the lead in to that 2nd Xmas as part of a console's first year.
The PS2 came out October 26th, 2000. Through that holiday season the following year is what I was counting, and you know it.
Even without those, was Grand Theft Auto 3 forgettable? SSX maybe (considering how much you've praised Blur, I think not)? ICO? Gran Turismo 3? Devil May Cry? Silent Hill 2? Twisted Metal Black? Seriously, I don't think you'd find many on this board that would call those forgettable.
You do know it's ok to admit there's something good about a Sony product, right? Your skin won't burn, you won't melt into a puddle.
EDIT: As far as Sky Odyssey and Bust A Move, yeah, I did enjoy those. There aren't many games of Sky Odyssey's type around and I still pop it in every once in a while. Then again, I was a big Pilotwings fan. And Bust A Move got a ton of play with my wife and I. It was a ton of fun. Granted, we hadn't owned a version of the game previously

Largely forgettable isn't the same as completely forgettable.
I love how "first year' can mean 'first year + months'. You can still consider up to the 25th of December as part of the PS2's 'first year'... but you'd be wrong.
Any why do you have a bug up your butt about me admitting something good about Sony? I had a PS2 to play PS2 games.

I love how "first year' can mean 'first year + months'. You can still consider up to the 25th of December as part of the PS2's 'first year'... but you'd be wrong.
Any why do you have a bug up your butt about me admitting something good about Sony? I had a PS2 to play PS2 games.
I doubt many would call them forgettable at all, largely or not. By those standards, the Wii had a completely forgettable year. But it didn't. As far as the first year, people generally don't go day and date with the calender, but normally include the rest of the year, since consoles so typically launch in the 4th quarter. You don't see that happen when they launch at other times.
As far as admitting something good about Sony, it's odd that it seems so hard for you to actually admit that something to do with a PlayStation product is good. You really don't see that from many people regarding any console. Calling those games forgettable while you praise what's out on the Wii (and in another thread, listed many very forgettable games for the 360 in it's first year) is pretty ridiculous. Sorry you can't seem to see that.

The first year of the DS was VERY forgettable, yet it finally came into its own. The same thing happened with the PS2. The fact that the PS2 went on to be the most popular home console EVER is a testament to the fact that you can have a less-than stellar first year of software and still come out on top.
I fail to see how that is Sony bashing in any way shape or form. Just because the PS2 had a largely forgettable first year says nothing about the system other than quality software takes time and install base.

You don't seem to get it. It wasn't forgetable. Gran Turismo 3 went on to sell 15 million copies. Devil May Cry spawned a series of games that's about to see it's fourth iteration. ICO is still regarded as one of the most artistic games ever created. Dark Cloud was a pretty different game, and the first by a studio that became so successful that they were recently able to buy the naming rights to a soccer stadium just for the hell of it. SSX was a damn good game, and has spawned a good sequels. Timesplitters also spawned a series, and was the first game by the ex-Golden Eye devs. And, hell, Grand Theft Auto 3 was arguably the most influential game of the last generation of consoles, for better or worse.
How the heck is that forgettable?

January: No More Heroes™ from Ubisoft
March 9: Super Smash Bros.® Brawl from Nintendo
March 25: Okami from Capcom
Spring: Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel from Nintendo
Summer: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed from LucasArts
This is where I ask myself....do I wish I had kept my Wii? Looking at that list of games I might purchase I see 3 that I would definitely buy. Nope, not regretting selling the system at the moment.

You are talking about a handful of titles out of how many PS2 games that were released in the first year?
I'm sorry, but most people aren't going to remember much about Red Faction, cause even thought it spawned a sequel, it was still forgettable. Like most of the rest of the PS2's first year lineup.

Actually, I'd be willing to bet most would remember Red Faction, if for nothing other than the hype behind the Geo Mod system. That, and it was a pretty good game.
Nevermind though, you seem to prefer to be willfully ignorant. Enjoy.

Mario Kart is one of the "Classic" series of games I have never grasped the understanding of in regards to its popularity or critical acclaim.

I don't think he understands the meaning of strong. The chaff to wheat ratio on the Wii is starting to resemble that of the DS.
Seriously.
A couple things on there, but my Wii will definitely be the Gamecube of this gen once again. Sitting there unloved, barring the occasional Nintendo franchise release.

Kart and SMB is too close together, count on that changing.

I remember. I even remember how the game ends. I diffused the bomb with 1 second left to spare. That's some Hollywood-esque luck right there.

No you don't! You damn dirty liar! It was totally forgettable! ;)
Nah, the first RF was really fun for it's time. Heck, I remember there were a lot of comparisons made between it and the first Half Life with the way the story was worked in with the gameplay. Now RF2? That was a huge disappointment.

I remember RF2...but only remember playing it, nothing about the actual gameplay. I can't even remember if I beat it or not.

RF2 was forgettable. It looked better, but had a much worse story and the gameplay just wasn't all that great. It did have some pretty good multiplayer, though. Better than Timesplitters 2 anyway, which came out around the same time.

I remember the Red Faction games. Though were pretty solid for console shooters at the time. Time has been very unkind to them though.
PS2 launch was forgettable, but it's first year, particularly the latter months, were not. You'd have to be a fuckwit troll to think otherwise. Few consoles can say they had that many influential and quality titles within it's first year.
However, if I had to choose a best launch, I'd say the GBA or Dreamcast. Great launch titles that hit several genres.
As for the list, I'm dissapointed in the Wii list. Given the financial success of the Wii, the third party support should be stronger. However, perhaps third-parties know the success and demographic of the Wii to well, and think it a fad, so the release crap release after crap release. I enjoy my Wii console, and it has some great features and offers some great innovative play at times, but goddamn, I never seen a system with so many shitty games in such a short time, and remain so goddamn successful. Hopefully, it will blossom like the DS did, but I doubt it. As Kelegacy said, we could be seeing another gamecube here.
The DS list is much more promising, and I'm excited by the surprises in store for the system, such as wii-to-ds integration. I liked it back with the GBA-GCN, but it was limited, but this time it shouldn't be that way. It could really rock.
That being said, of all the 2008 lineups, the PS3's is the nicest looking. I don't own a PS3, but I will soon. In all honesty, I'm surprised by the solid 2008 by the PS3, given how sprinkled the quality game tend to be on that system.

I'd argue TSII had the better MP, but RF2 had the better single player.

Yeah, I know that was what most people thought. TS2 just really disappointed me after the first one. The one thing that really stands out to me in my memory is the menus being completely awful for setting up multiplayer options.
