A familiar face over at 1UP (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165464) brings word on the first Dragonball Z game for the current generation of consoles. Today they officially announced Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, the first fully next-gen videogame iteration of the franchise.
Some may recall that Burst Limit was quietly unveiled for the first time at Jump Festa 2008. This new announcement confirms that the game is coming and will be hitting North America this year.
While the core Burst Limit gameplay seems to be sticking to the formula developed in the Buokai series, major additions will be worked into the game, not the least of which is a complete online mode. Naturally the graphics will also be receiving a huge boost.DBZ Budokai 3 was pretty well received by the critics and lets face it, the show is just one long fighting game. Lets hope this one continues the quality

So..according to them the Wii is not Next Gen? I do not know if I agree with them.

only sort of off topic, whatever happened to the DBZ MMO game? not that i'd be likely to play it, but i am curious.
on topic, i would actually play this, i enjoyed the games on ps2. the screenies i've seen for this actually look pretty solid.
ultimately i feel like these games should play more akin to power stone or the game on PSone that was vaguely power stoneish. the name escapes me now, but surely someone knows? i think it began with a D...

Dang, 7.0 is so-so in 1Up world Phil? Really? :D
I'm looking forward to this just because I liked the recent game quite a bit. Heck, you can check out my review on EvAv right here (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39943).
I also think for many developers they see the Wii as more of a PS2-class machine in how they attack the system (there are a lot of Wii/PS2 multi releases that are similar and the Wii has gotten the better end of the deal, see both DBZ: BT3 and Godzilla on Wii no matter how bad the latter is, it is undeniable that it looks and plays better).

Boo on this.
I'm no DBZ fanboy, as I've stated I used to be big into it, a long ways back. These things happen when your roommate is a DBZ freak. But I genuinely liked Tenkaichi 3 more than Budokai 3.
The Budokai series was much more of a fighting game. It was what you would expect a DBZ fighting game to be like if you played games like Tekken and Soul Calibur.
The Tenkaichi series is more of a simulator. You have a lot more freedom of movement and it's more like the fights in the show. Everyone is teleporting, things are exploding, it's insane.
I think most of the people who liked Budokai better just wanted the same old fighting game formula everyone else uses, but with DBZ characters. Meh.
I just like the fighting...the rest of it can go for all I care. I skipped most of the storyline episodes anyways. I don't need to hear someone say how they're going to beat everyone for 12 freaking episodes before they actually fight.

I wonder if this going to finally come out on a Xbox labeled machine.

Anybody else remember Bid For Power?
Yeah, that was actually one of the better Quake III total conversions.
Anyhow, I'm not sure that this means that it isn't coming to the Wii; it probably just means that there isn't enough of a market to build it around the PS2.

Yeah, but the DBZ games ended up being better... as BFP needed a good lock on system.
I kinda enjoy the Budaki series. Even though I only played #2.
They are not a legit fighting series, as the game in unbalanced, shallow, has some input lag, and isn't that awesome, as a fighter.
But as a liscensed game that has the goal of being true to the source material, it's awesome. As DBZ fights are not balanced, shallow in fights, involve lots of standing around doing nothing.
So I like the DBZ games, just never dare to call them a fighting game. As its not worthy to stand in the same room as Virtua Fighter 5, Street Fighter 2, Smash Bros, or Soul Caliber for Dreamcast.

I just wanted to point out that if you haven't played Budokai 3, you technically missed the only one that is a genuine fighting game. 1 and 2 were ok, but mostly fan service. 3 was an actual fighting game, and pretty decent at that. But if I want a straight up fighter...I don't look to DBZ games either.
Still, Budokai 3 was a whole lot better at being a fighting game than 1 or 2 ever got. Most DBZ game fans still say Budokai 3 was the best of all of them, all systems, all games related to DBZ.
If I want a fighting game, I put in Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur.
If I want to shoot giant death beams at people and teleport around like some sort of demi-god, I play Tenkaichi.
I don't consider them to be in the same field, other than you use your fists/feet/face to smash other people's fists/feet/face.

I played the Wii version of 3, but I found the controls more annoying than fun.
As for the PS2, my friends and I play a lot of Tenkaichi 2 and look forward to a PS3/360 version.

I assume you saw the part where it said this game is going back to the Budokai 3 style? I'm just saying, they're abandoning the Tenkaichi system. So Burst Limit will be nothing like the Tenkaichi games. It's an upgraded graphics version of Budokai 3, from what I've seen.
If you liked Budokai 3 as well, you're set.

Don't get me wrong, i don't dislike Budokai 3. I just prefer the Tenkaichi system.
If Burst Limit improves on B3's design, it will be a good game. I just wished they would of stayed with the Tenkaichi system, imo.
I've yet to play any of the Budokai games. The last time I played a Dragon Ball game I think it was on SNES.
I've seen the trailer for this sometime last month though, I hope its a good game as I'm really enjoying Naruto for 360 - which is also a first time playing that series on a system.

Not made by Dimps or Spike. I say you might get something different altogether.

Oh wait, I ment Tenkaietchi 2. I played Budokai 3 I think, and found it to be laggy garbage only good for fanboys and those who hate good fighters.
As SSJ4 Goku IS better than almost every other character, which is wrong.

the game looks freaking amazing, it looks like they are following the story very very closely, as most of those clips were from the show in CG. im gonna get it for sure, and gonna go see the live action dbz movie in august. i grew up with dbz and looks like ill grow old with it..

After playing the Naruto ROTN game, I'm feeling if it's purely a fighting game - they're missing the point.
I haven't really liked any of the DBZ games since the SNES Super Butuouden days - which was the last time they were pushing the envelope of the genre.
If you're going to adapt a TV series - how about some of the exploration/finding the DragonBalls/Quests/Character Development - as a basis for the fighting (a la Naruto ROTN) - instead of the 6th or 7th dishing up of the same cold leftovers?
I'm surely not enticed by "same old" now with King Cold and 3 new moves per character for an average fighting series. If they were to give me a chance to run around as Goku, unlocking quests, progressing the DBZ story (or even DB would lend itself well to this style of game) - with some one-on one fighting thrown in - I'd take a look.
As someone who owns DVD's of every single DB/DBZ/DBGT episode (and movie) - I'd consider myself a fan - who just needs more of a reason to buy a DBZ game than "same old but flashier".

DBZBT2 was developed for PS2 and "ported up" to the Wii.
After owning a Wii for a 13 or so months now - I'm beginning to doubt whether I consider it next-gen.

That's one problem I have both with this, and the last game that came out on the Wii/PS2... it looks less like the show than Tenkaichi Budokai 2.

And this is why I think Machinima can be pushed further to accomplish more kick ass things in animation.

I actually think Atari should look into a arena based multiplayer experience. I mean it fits the fighting game genre to a T, but I'm just saying they should exploit the license in a different way. Sagas was horrible, but that's not DBZ's fault. Yeah I'm looking at you Avalanche Studios. But also, don't they get tired of rehashing the same story? I mean call Akira and see if you can get him to come up with another long drawn out fight and boss(saga) to take place after Buu just for the game.
Again, arena based multiplayer fighting. Customizable powers too.
