1UP (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165316) got their hands on a 3rd party guitar from Nyko called The Frontman which allows PS3 owners to use 1 guitar for both Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band.

The guitar itself uses a dongle that has switch on it that allows the user to choose which game they are playing. This is excellent news for PS3 owners who have been able to enjoy 4 player Rock Band unless they actually bought two copies of Rock Band, as there's currently no guitar sold separately that supports Rock Band.

In your eye Activision and EA. Now you've both just lost out on potential sales.

Sheesh. I can't believe Activision, EA and Sony are still whining like children about their Rock Band / Guitar Hero controller compatibility. Just release the gorram patch already!

You do know that Sony pretty much doesn't have a choice in the matter, right? EA either, really. It's all on Activision.

This is actually good for Sony and EA since the whole point of the patch was to allow their player base to use other devices that they didn't themselves develop. The only one losing out in this is Activision.

All EA has to do is cut a check. They have the cash and Activision should be compensated for the work.
I would think it's all on EA to make the move.

Activision should be compensated for the work.Doesn't that happen when the consumer buys the guitar?

I don't see how Sony would sit on the patch but allow a third party hardware to release. I'd imagine this isn't Sony-blessed third party gear then?

Couldn't Activision just put out a patch that would break this controller too?

That would be incredibly dick, but yeah, they probably could.

Depends on how well they reverse-engineered the signal. I mean, if it's basically a copy, I doubt there's anything they can do at that point.

Unless they did something really sneaky and put in different methods of encrypting the signal, but that seems.... way too forward-thinking for Activision. I'd have a difficult time reconciling that with their current reputation.

Or I guess the guitar could be re-flashed with different ROMs, hrm.

They, supposedly, have quality control and assurance. I think that if Sony had more consoles in the channel, they may have tried a little hardball. But they cannot afford to irk the largest publisher[s] in console gaming.

How about releasing the gorram game. I've had mine pre-ordered since November 6th and I'm still waiting. By the time it arrives I'll probably have lost any interest. I guess I'll save $200.

No. You're wrong, on all accounts.

Last time I checked, wasn't Sony just holding back the patch because Activision requested it? Activision wants money or the patch. Just so happens that the patch could assist both their title and Rock Band - it goes further than "making money for the enemy."

I'm sure there are people who own Rock Band that would buy Guitar Hero III since you can't buy a Rock Band guitar just yet.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Which I'm sure someone will...

I own Rock Band and I bought GHIII (which is a travesty). Now I'm just boycotting Activision.

The do have a choice in the matter. Sony decides 100% regardless of anything else if they want to release the patch or not. They alone have the final say.

Now, they are caught in the middle of things but to say they have don't have a choice in the matter is naive.

Fine. They do have a choice, but either choice that they can take will alienate either the largest publisher or the former-largest publisher. Sony can't win either way until those two stop bickering; even then, the sole blame is placed on Activision due to that they are wanting even more money for something that someone already paid to use.
