View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are You Playing?

As August progresses, many people will be going back to school, and gaming time will be killed. What games are the must be played and finished before school starts? For us working stiffs, what games will you be playing this weekend? I am still on Gothic 2 with my magician and enjoying it just as much as the first time I played, maybe even more. What games out there that you like to revisit every now and then?

PSP emulators - SNES, Amiga, NeoGeoCD, MAME, GB
Probably looking forward to Oblivion the most....otherwise the outlook of games look pretty damn dry.

It's demo season: Dungeon Siege II, Dragonshard, and soon F.E.A.R.
I'm sure I'll be working on my endless NeverwinterNights project (http://adamandjamie.com/da) as well. Mapping and QA to do.

Man, if I could only get System Shock to to fire up on XP. I found the CD and manual a couple of weeks ago while cleaning out mom's garage. Damn you XP....
On the other hand I am now officially addicted to Blender, this kick ass free 3d rendering program. So that pretty much sucks up all of my free time.

I decided to get back into WoW to join in the struggle against Panda Attact with the Knights of Arcadia on the Black Iron server. That server is seriously the Penny-Arcade Vs. PVP server. Great community though.

Planescape Torment, Viewtiful Joe 2, and I downloaded Maple Story for some reason. I'm not really sure why. I was pretty drunk at the time. May have something to do with it.

Well, I just blasted through the great F.E.A.R. demo tonight. Other than that, I'll be hitting up that Dragonshard demo, probably some Disgaea tomorrow night, and hopefully some Guild Wars. Thinking of finally joining up with that EvAv guild I keep hearing so much about...

I just downloaded the XP compatible version of Star Control 2 they're working on over at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ and I am loving it just as much as when I first played it. The various gameplay elements mesh together, the exploration, the combat, the overall pacing of the discovery of new races and ships, and of course the excellent level of humor throughout. Even when they get serious they got it right. They gave a great backstory for the bad guys, rather than the usual "kill everything in sight" alien.
It's said too often, but in this case it's true: They don't write games like this anymore.

Star Wars Episode 3 for DS. I got it pretty cheap and an actually digging it quite a bit. It's got that good, old-timey 16-bit scrolling neat 'em up charm and the art style and animation are all well done and full of character. The 3d ship parts seem slighty tagged on though, but quite fun if you can get used to the non-analogue controls.
Also just picked up Mighty Atom for the Gameboy. That should tide me over in Treasure goodness until the next Gunstar Heroes.

School starts the week after next, but I was at school everday this week (Student Council Officer)
Now...I never got to play all the gamecube games I wanted too...seeing as how I never got a gamecube. I really accomplished alot of the games I wanted to play.
Hm...games I still need to complete:
Final Fantasy V
Jak II

It is a demo weekend for me...Dungeon Siege II, Dragonshard, and F.E.A.R. I've touched on all of them already and they all have great potential. Depending if on I make it through the demos, I'm going back to Riddick and Silent Hunter III.

just got my copies of shadowhearts and shadowhearts covenant in the mail. Just playing through the first one so far and seems pretty good. Have to keep reminding myself about the judgement ring thing though. At first I would just hit attack and forget to do anything else and ended up missing all the time. Also picked up star ocean 3 for 14 bucks at cc seems pretty good although the cut scenes get on my nerves a little.

I didn't really get to do much gaming this week as I spent all my free time watching Season 1 of Deadwood on DVD.
I'm finally off this weekend so I'm hoping to spend more time on WoW and get some of these quests cleared out that I've had for the last 10 levels (stupid dungeons).
Also going to put some more time into Atelier Iris, Fire Emblem 2 and maybe load up Final Fantasy 7 and play through that again. I was watching Steamboy and they had the trailer for Advent Children at the beginning and I remembered that I never did finish VII...
I wouldn't mind trying the F.E.A.R. demo out either, if it ever downloads...
I tried getting into the Knights of Arcadia the other day but that was when the server guild system was busted so none of the invites worked. Ah well. I'll just stick with my main.

Running my new video card (X800 XL 256!) through the paces. Playing lots of Battlefield 2 along with Guild Wars. Also dabbling in Doom 3 and some F.E.A.R. demo ... very mixed thoughts about that last one.
I'm trying to revisit The Dig for the PC. Might have to go the DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/) route I'm thinking.
Have a good weekend everyone!

I actually picked up a Dreamcast with 4 controllers, memory cards and the fishing rod controller, not to mention a whole CD sleeve full of games, while at the local rummage sale. Only cost $20 Canadian for the lot!
Now I have two DC's and lots of controllers and games. Plus I can virtually fish all year long :)
I need to see if I can find the SNES emulator they did for the DC a few years back and find some ROMs to play on it (preferably CT, since everyone else is playing it on their PSP this weekend).

No games. :( I'm stuck babysitting 3 fucking dogs who are truly worse than children, but at 10/11 A.M. on Sunday I'm free! I've been playing Atelier Iris but i might stop. I just dont seem to be engrossed as I'd hoped to be. Plus I have too much writing to do to really devote myself to a new RPG.
So, as always, I'm staring at my game cases instead of actually playing them.

Wow. I guess I'm the only person here playing GTA: San Andreas. Have to do it on the QT, though. My wife's been hearing all the bad publicity on the TV and told me, "You're not playing that awful game, are you? It's all sex & violence."

That's the kind of remark that's likely to lead to you living alone in your parents' basement.
We talked it over, and she acknowledged that she had no first-hand knowledge about the game, but asked that I not tell her stories about what I do in the game. Marriage is all about compromise.

No, I'm playing through San Andreas as well. Though it's kind of off/on since I'm not finding it as fun as everyone else did. I feel like I've done this all before a million times and the story isn't really engaging me (though maybe it's only the part I'm at, I just did all the missions to help your buddy become a rapper). I think I'd have more fun with it if I hadn't already clocked some 300 hours in the previous 2 games. That and I'm finding the whole turf war thing exhausting (constantly running around trying to expand/defend turf, bah).
As for the wife thing, eh. Different strokes for different folks. As long as you're happy.

DONT do any turf war shit.
Trust me. It's a waste of time that'd you'll soon learn. I did that bullshit in the PS2 version and then when the PC game came out i basicaly skipped right over it. At least, dont get too involved in it just yet. Oh and the "OG-Loc" missions are not comparable to the rest of the game. Maybe it was because I hated that little shit. yeah, that was it.

Good for her :p. My wife and I generally have good communication. I didn't tell her I was playing GTA because she normally could care less about what I'm playing. She's not into computer gaming herself, and basically considers it one of my geek passtimes.

Most women and "normal people" do consider gaming to be a geek pastime. Kind of ridiculous, really. If i waste 2 hours playing a videogame, I'm a geek. But if she spends 2 hours caking the makeup to her face or having an Asian put fake nails on her hands, it is time well spent.
I found that if i didnt talk about my current videogame too much to her, I would be fine. That's why I come to Evil Avatar. I can let my videogame geek toxins seep out into the internet, keeping the geeky pollutants from her proximity. To her, I'm still that high school jock with the just-below-average penis that she fell in love with. And that's fine by me.

I'm enjoying it, but it's freaking out my Xbox. I'm currently at the Milkman bit, and parts of it are unplayable. I'm pretty sure it's really the Xbox, and not the game, but I'm worried Advent Rising won't work at all.
Anyway, Schafer is genius. He writes damaged people very well.

Psychonauts could be a blockbuster Saturday morning cartoon, or at least Cartoon Network/Nicktoon. The characters are bizarre, as is the world they inhabit. I sometimes stopped just to appreciate the art direction and excellent dialogue. I agree that Tim Schafer is a madman/genius. He and Burton should join forces and recreate the cosmos...but I'd settle for a movie, cartoon, or game.
