Next Generation has a couple article up speculating on the "Bigger Picture" of the next console.
The Xbox360 (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=623&Itemid=2)
The PS3 (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=622&Itemid=2)
and finally, my personal hope in the next gen, The Revolution (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=624&Itemid=2)
I'm basically ripping this straight from a Slashdot article, because somehow I doubt many people here get along with the people there.

I disliked all of the articles except for the Revolution one, he just seems like a sony fanboy to me and he's just hating on the Xbox 360, but the stuff he says about the Revolution makes sense to me...

Eh, i think he pegged microsoft, and not because he is anti-ms and/or pro-sony.
The 1-2 punch of XNA and Live can't be ignored.
I'm not a game dev, nor have I even glanced at XNA, but if it lives up to how it is being billed, it would seem like a great platform, especially for those who want to target multiple platforms with the same franchise. If it is absolute crap, and somebody is sure of it, I'm sure they'll say something. :-)
So someone wrote an article on what we already know and then added his own personal bias to it. Awesome!

Just so everyone knows, XNA is not a tool. It is an initiative to make PC and console tools play nicer. That's it. Only recently have the first beta tools of any of this initiative actually made it out to developers. A full year.5 from when J announced it. But I thought those XNA demos used XNA!?? Uh no. That said, at least MS is trying, which is more than you can say for Sony or Nintendo. Nintendo keeps everyone in the dark while sony just keeps making it more and more difficult and expensive to make games. If anyone thinks exploiting the SPEs is going to be easy, they are incredibly mistaken.

I've been reading these articles and they're interesting for sure, but they're also filled with a lot of empty BS stuff that sounds technical and business like but just sorta sits there. I dunno how to explain it.

Well, the only console anyone really knows anything about is the 360. The other two are just wild speculation, and business science has ever been wild guesses to my point of view.

Wow... quality articles there.
I could have read some bullshit like this in the blogsphere. Or by handing 20 bucks to a street fortune teller.

If, in 2010, the leading next generation console had a Windows-based development environment and operating system underlying it, and a Microsoft-controlled (and tithed) digital distribution network sitting on top, would it really matter to Microsoft if a Sony or Nintendo badge were on the front? As the article states, it's one possible look at one possible future. But honestly, does this not sound like ***' strategy?
Control the software, control the network, who cares who builds the hardware...?

I thought they were pretty good and didn't seem particularly biased to me. In fact, they seemed relatively positive toward each company. Some people are just touchy.

It's not even bullshit- there's literally no content to these articles. Worthless.

I wonder how he saw the Revolution specs.
Anyway, a fairly balanced if rather empty set of articles.

My take on XNA:
They've made XNA because they've pretty much had to. This generation, with the architecture of the xbox and pc being so similar, alot of pc games have been converted to xbox with little work (maybe thats an understatement, what I mean is a lot less work than what would be required for the GC and PS2). With the 360 using a completely different architecture this is their tool to ensure the conversions keep happening...

Glad to see I'm not the only one. There are a lot of worthless filler articles on that site. For every one article that's informative there are 3-5 that are completely worthless.

Food for thought doesn't necessarily have to be packed with facts.
With the attitude you guys are showing towards these articles, just do yourself a favor and don't read anything related to any of the new consoles until the vendors put out the press releases stating product is hitting retail.
