Two Weeks of Vacation! And while playing Two Weeks of Vacation! I plan on playing City of Heroes/Villians, Total War, and what ever other game that I get for Christmas. Any suggestions of PC games that are a must have? How many of you are traveling in the next few days - leaving your systems at home? What will you be playing this weekend?

More Final Fantasy XI again. I'm going to try to get my wife to level her Ninja with mine so we can cap those out for a full sub at 37. If not, I may either do some Warrior, or just more Beastmaster (62 now). Otherwise, more Disgaea, as usual, and I've got the urge to finally finish that last mission in the original Advance Wars, so that'd be nice.
EDIT: I've also had the strange urge to finish off the Legacy of Kain series lately, so if while I'm out and about this weekend I come across Defiance for either the PS2 or XBOX, I may grab that.

* EVE as usual
* Maybe some CoD4 SP & MP
* I'd really like Assassin's Creed to show up from GameFly, but that's highly doubtful, so whatever they end up sending me

COD 4 MP - Need to get to the level cap, then probably gonna go for prestige right away
Mass Effect - Second playthrough, bastard male soldier.
Battlefield 2: Project Reality mod - hopefully version 0.7 will be released soon, although either way I'll be pretending to be a real virtual soldier

Universe at war seems kinda awesome.
Is it out yet?
I have my xbox back right before I'm having a week off. Great timing MS!
I'll be playing ME, Blue Dragon, Creed, Puzzle Quest
...
and some FFXII (although it's getting on my nerve how much of a boring grind the game really is, give me back my turnbased battles, or something more Vagrant Story, where I have actual control and push a button once in a while without it becoming a complete chaotic mess. I'm really trying but I think it's all way to clinical and isn't really a game anymore, but more of a RPG manager kinda thing. Where's the fun?)

Have you been doing the Hunts? Those are where I found most of the real challenge in the game to be, and they ended up being some of the most fun I had with the game.

The Wife gave me Mass Effect as an early X-Mas gift and I'm hooked, so a lot of that and my brother brought GH3 home with him for the holidays so we'll be rocking some co-op.

I think I have a good idea what games I'm getting for my birthday (TODAY!!!! WOOO QUATER CENTURY MARK!!!!) and Christmas. So I'll likely be playing Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Guitar Hero 3, and Eternal Sonata.
EVE with the EvAv guys, and some City of Villains and perhaps a bit of City of heroes aswell :P

I'm on day 2 of 13 with no work and it is going great so far. I played PGR4 for 7 hours yesterday. On tap for this weekend, and well, the next 12 days are:
PGR4
Rock Band
Orange Box
Mass Effect
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Super Mario Galaxy

COD4 as always as of late. I would like to get through all the prestige modes, but have a feeling the coming of Mass Effect will delay me.

Oh, that's a good point. They ARE the most fun of the whole game. I really enjoyed last weekend hunting some of them. Problem is they open up gradually and you need to progress the questlines in order to hunt them, since they're in different locations.
I really enjoyed the hunts so far, they seem to be much more based on skill and exploration then on level grinding and power, something the quests lack. I'm at the sandsea now but these dungeons are way too fucking long and slow for my taste. Especially because you basically just watch and heal on occasion. I find myself speeding towards the exit, where in other RPG's I try to find every freaking little thing. Here I just want out. If I could save anywhere that would be better.
And that's from someone who actually slogged through Blue Dragon disk 1 and enjoyed it.
Whoever thought that needing a license board AND buying licenses for it wasn't to much of a stupid drag needs to be shot.

Most likely World In Conflict multiplayer, and my second playthrough off Mass Effect.
I'm stuck with my laptop (MacBook Pro), and an SDTV, so neither experience is as awesome as I would like. :(
I'm missing COD4 (PC). I'd only just started playing the multiplayer when I came here back to my parents house. I should have brought it with me and installed it on this laptop.

I might play a bit of Crysis, but most likely I'll just be playing Super Mario Galaxy. I also might poke around the stores this weekend, see if I can't pick up a new game (haven't been able to get my hands on Umbrella Chronicles yet, and I'm re-interested in Castlevania on the PSP).

Doh. I had a whole response here and somehow closed the tab before I posted it.
Anyway...
I'm at the in-laws for a week, so I'll be 'stuck' playing the DS & PSP.
I'll probably sink in a lot of time playing my new addiction, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 on the PSP. When I can tear myself away from that, I'll try to make more progress on FFT: War of the Lions and Silent Hill:Origins.
I'll probably put some time in on Phantom Hourglass while I wait for my DS to charge up, as well as wowing my family with some of the new magic tricks I've learned with Master Of Illusion.
I wish I had brought my PS2 down so I could get some more work done on FFXII. I'm STILL stuck in that bloody lighthouse and have about 5 levels or so to go before I can even dream of taking on the boss that keeps slapping me around. Sigh. I guess that's my goal for when I get home. I need to finish it so I can start playing Revenant Wings on the DS (which is sitting in shrinkwrap back home to keep me from playing it).
Oh, and I like the license board. What I don't like is Disease. WTF?! I hate that status ailment SO MUCH.
Otherwise, I'll be reading, playing with the kids and generally trying to relax.

Camping this weekend with the wife, so I might play a little DS. I need to get back to Pokemon Pearl. Maybe some Planet Puzzle League. As for consoling when we get back, I just bought Space Giraffe so I'll probably work on that. Maybe some Mario Galaxy. I have Bioshock en route from eBay so if that arrives I'll be giving that a go.

12-21-2007, 09:02 AM
Well, since I got my new video card, I'm trying out all kinds of demos and such. Just spent a couple of hours with the Dawn of War: Winter Assault demo, and I think I'll be picking up the pack of DoW with the two current expansions pretty soon. I just finished downloading the EVE premium client as well, and will try to sign up for a trial to see what that is like. I tried the UT3 demo last night, but there aren't any good servers for it now that the game is out, so it got uninstalled.
I should be getting the Orange Box (PC) for Christmas, as I had only been able to rent it once on the 360 before. That means playing through EP1 and EP2 of Half-life 2, trying out TF2, and replaying Portal for the fourth time. I'm also expecting one or two Wii games.
I'm sure I'll log onto CoH now and then over the weekend, but I'm more interested in other things at the moment.

I drove home and took my PC with me because I'm a dork, so I'll be playing TF2, finishing World In Conflict, and playing whatever Gamefly sends me. Hooray for the holidays.

busy week planned:
finish expert guitar career (rockband) -- i "just" have to get by GGHT
finish medium drum career (rockband) -- its getting easier
finish mass effect (i'm about halfway through and loving it but the burnout demo and the rockband dlc seduced me away temporarily)
finish assassin's creed (i'm over halfway through and still liking it. i really want to see where this is going. i love the story so far.)
play an ass-ton of the burnout paradise city demo with friends. we played it for two hours last night and only stopped because it was so late. wow its fun! has anyone compared this game to skate yet? it has elements that made skate great -- tricking off of a ramp going for biggest jumps, most barrel rolls etc. i can't wait for the full release.
i just got COD4 from amazon for $40 and played through 1 of the missions. it looks pretty good and i hope to dig into that this week too.
CoD4 multiplayer and Witcher on PC. The rest of my time will be spent putting the final touches on next week's impending holiday.

Five days off and all the games in my collection have been beat? Sounds like I need to do some clean up work, as in get achievements and finish side quests... maybe even beat Shivering Isles!
Also my bro will be bringing back CoD4 so I imagine Halo 3 and that will be competing for my time... and since I haven't seen CoD4 in weeks I imagine it will win.

I'd like to finish Assassin's Creed. Then start on some of the unopened games I have like Tomb Raider or Kane and Lynch.
Whatever we play on Live. I here Shadowrun is back in season. With no work for the next week and a half.
I too, plan on whipping Tomb Raider out. Haven't decided if I should play Legend or Anniversary. Everyone says the first has a cliff hanger but doesn't play as smooth as Anniversary. Play the clunky one or the fixed version first. Decisions, decisions.
If I can beat AC in the time I did, I know you can fit something else in there.
I started Enchanted Arms, and that gay guy is cracking me up. So over the type with that one. I don't know how long it is but I might play as much as I can. Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon are also on my desk.
Bioshock is also up at bat. After Darkness, I don't know if I even care enough. It's like gee another great story based FPS.
Also if I get my PSP for Christmas, I'll probably go spend about $200 on all the games Gorvi was listing for the Tactics Ogre lover in me. Disgaea and Jeanne D'Arc.
So many games and so little time.
I was thinking about asking you guys to pick me a short came that I can knock out. You name it and it's pretty decent, I probably got it?

Holy Crap! You make me miss being single. In between family stuff and spending time with the wife, I'll be working on my second play-through of Mass Effect (Renegade-style).
I beat all of the games I own on Tuesday, so I have about a week long drought until Christmas hits where I get more. On the up side to that, I'll finally get to play this Assassin's Creed game people seem to be talking about.
However, the good part of the non-gaming week is I've managed to get into the triple digits in the book I'm writing, so that's well worth it I guess.

Wintersday began Friday, so I will be participating in the festivities, particularly the pvp snowball fights, in GuildWars. Last year I took the time to get the "skillz" title and was considering going for "Pro skillz".
Also, I am playing through Planescape: Torment via GameTap. It was one of the games that I always meant to take a look at, but it got lost in a sea of millions of other games. I am really impressed with just how deep the story is; even the side stories are deep and intriguing. I find myself having a good time exploring and enjoying the story as the mystery unravels, and yet don't feel a need to "rush through" the game.
On the DS, I took Spigot's advice on Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol; it is an awesome game, but it could not withstand the non-stop playing and I am already done with it. I will probably continue with my Phoenix Wright trials. Spigot, I think I will make you my official DS game reviewer: what's next to go in my DS?
After Christmas, I am expecting the Orange Box and will likely spend some time on Portal, since the concept really intrigues me. The rest of vacation will be determined by the gifts I receive.

And debating on picking up CoD4. My problem with that lies in the PC Sp demo likes to crash to desktop randomly, and I don't have a gold live sub on the 360, so I'd hate to buy the pc version only to have it not run well.

Woo! Someone listened to me.
Let's see. I'd keep working on those Phoenix Wright trials. Apollo Justice is coming in February, so you'll want to be finished the first three games by then. You've played Hotel Dusk: Room 215, right? If not, get to it.
And one can never get enough Etrian Odyssey or Magical Starsign.
I'm glad you enjoyed Chibi Robo though. Just wait until February when Professor Layton & The Curious Village comes out. MMm....
I picked up Every Extend Extra for the PSP today. I loved E4 on the 360 and the cheap price on E3 and the ability to play it on the go couldn't be resisted.

Returner, I see you've got Monster Hunter Freedom 2... You shall have to join us (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41582) in some online hunting in a week or two. We're getting a band of dwarves together to build us a nice tunnel (http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/) so we can play online.
What is tunnel? Do you need a PC cause mine broke and I have been to lazy to fix it. Funny thing is I haven't missed it. Might have to fix it so I ca play Monster Hunter.

From the looks of things, you'll need a computer to run the app and then you go from there.
I haven't run it yet as I'm at the in-laws and don't want to incur the wrath of my father-in-law by loading wonky software onto his precious laptop, but I'll be loading this up when I get home next weekend.
Join us over on that thread to talk about all things Monster Hunterish.

Ugh. I bought EA for 10 bucks, thinking it would be allright, I seriously want my money back on that one.
Got on the Mythos Beta, so a lot of that this weekend, and some Mass Effect and HellGate London should round out my gaming goodness. Plus, lots of games on the ol' Christmas list means I will have plenty to do over the holidays.

I'm only a hour into it. I'm at the door before going to the fair. There isn't anything all that next gen to it as well. It reminds me of those horrible Mega Man battle nexus games but for some reason I'm able to go through it.
I wish these games instead of push a button to bring up the next line of dialog just keep going. It's got voice acting for crying out loud.

Ha, and quality voice acting at that:P. I never made it out of the fair btw. I just quit. There's dozens of better PS2 rpg's for my time to waste on.
If the battles looked the part I would stick with it. But they don't. It looks dreadful and waaaay to zoomed out.

Enchanted Arms isn't THAT bad. It's many steps below Blue Dragon or Eternal Sonata, but if you've got a hankering for generic JRPG's, it's passable.
I put about 15 or so hours and trust me, once the fair is finished, the game gets a lot better. The gay fellow is also a much better character if you have the Japanese voice acting on. He goes from being utterly ridiculous to being a character that just happens to be gay.
I'll eventually finish it up as I liked the world and the story was ok but it's at the bottom of the pile of JRPGs that I need to play through.
I'm torn about Every Extend Extra on the PSP. I don't understand why a game that I adored on the 360 is making me regret the $20 I spent on the PSP version. I just dont' seem to be able to pull off the crazy huge chains that I did on the 360... and I hate the 'boss' battles.
I'm probably going to try playing it a few more times. If I can get into some kind of a groove with it, I'll keep it. If not, I'll see if I can play the 'I got this for Christmas and hated it' card at Wal Mart and get my money back.

I too gave EA a shot, and hated it immediately so I just quit and returned the game. It may be "passable", but there are so many other RPGs out there that are actually fun from the beginning that why would you want to spend any time on a game that barely ranks more than just passable?
Back on topic... I'm back on Eternal Sonata now that I finally got past the damn Dolce fight. Holy shit she hits hard. Although I might've been underlevelled at the time because after grinding out a few more levels, I finally managed to get past that boss fight and actually making progress again. This game has a weird sense of balance -- it's ridiculously easy until you run into a brick wall of a boss.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge Of The Warlords.
Best game of 2007.
And to think of all the technological advancements in video games, the old-school game mixed with rpg elements ends up being the most fun.
Game companies like Crytek and Epic should take notice: make games fun, THEN make them look good.

Hmm... tough call.
On the one hand, Blue Dragon has a pretty deep battle system with tons of abilities that you may or may not use (just like Final Fantasy). I've only played the demo so I can't comment too much about the full battle system.
Eternal Sonata, on the other hand, is more "action" oriented and can be fun, but it's also pretty shallow. Dungeons only have two enemy types at a time, and you don't have that many abilities during battle -- just regular attack and either a "light" or "dark" attack. It can be pretty repetitive.
It basically boils down to whether you want a strictly turn-based battle, or a more or less "action" oriented battle system (although it's still turn based -- you have 10 secs to use whatever abilities you want for each character).

Blue Dragon. Eternal Sonata is more action oriented, but lacks a real deep system which kinda makes it buttonbashing most of the time. They can be fun, but the 2 different monsters per dungeon thing makes it a drag sometimes. Blue Dragon on the other hand takes a while to really cut loose (as in too long), but if you can stand EA then this should be a walk in the park. Battles can become quite awesome.
Reportedly Blue Dragon is too easy though.
There's a hard patch, I started that way, but prepare for a grind. I almost wished at one occassion I hadn't. I almost got stuck at one point and had to backtrack 3 hours.
The battles do give you a real challenge though, maybe that's why I'm more of a fan then most people. It's really tactical at times. Even changing formations for certain events (never ever did that in a RPG while most have the option) and beating a boss with one guy standing doesn't get old.

I love the Eternal Sonata battle system as a nice change from the standard turn-based system used in Blue Dragon but as much as I adore pretty much everything about Eternal Sonata, I hated the lack of enemy variety in the dungeons. There are only 2-3 enemies in each dungeon and you'll be able to fight with your eyes closed after spending any time in a dungeon.
Blue Dragon does have a deeper battle system but dear god, that first disc almost killed me. The game IS quite good once you get to about the 18 hour mark or so and are finishing up the first disc but until that last section of the first disc, I needed a lot of very strong coffee to keep me awake during that snooze-fest.
Eternal Sonata is a glorious feast for the eyes and ears though. Aesthetically, it's such a better game. Unfortunately, as mentioned, the battle system falls apart after not too long.
I didn't mind Enchanted Arms back when I played it, but now that you have Mass Effect, Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata to help fill the RPG void on the 360, I can't see anyone rushing to play it unless they've played the rest of their JRPG's and are really jonesing for a fix.

Just curious but did you manage to unlock party level 6 yet? With the 6-harmony chain?
I'm already finding the battles to be fairly tedious in ES, although I'm holding out until party level 6 since I hear it's supposed to be all kinds of awesome.
(But playing in encore mode for the rest of the achievements? Fuck that, I don't wanna replay the game just for achievements!)

Wow. Want to know the true meaning of humiliation?
Playing Guitar Hero 3 against a 13 year old girl and getting absolutely schooled and then watching her get through Through THe Fire And The Flames on Expert...
Sob.
Here I was, watching these 13-15 year olds play GH3 and thinking to myself that I could beat any of them with my eyes closed. Then I came the realization that these kids have all day, every day to work on their Guitar Heroing while I've been busy playing Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed and other 'real' games. Sigh.

I'd like to finish Assassin's Creed. Then start on some of the unopened games I have like Tomb Raider or Kane and Lynch.
I would suggest Tomb Raider after AC but i'm a TR fanboy so i'm biased :).
I started .Hack//Redemption but i'm going away for the holidays so i'm bringing some handheld goodies. Try to work on Silent Hill origins and started play FF III on DS. I've never been a huge fan of FF but this one finally has me hooked. I'm playing this since I think I broke my New Super Mario Bros. cart. Sounds like both games pick up after you get into the meat of it. I can see where Enchanted Arms is going. I hate how some Jrpgs spell shit out for you like this is pre-k. Even Marvel Alliance did that actually. Remember how when you would meet a new character, they would go in there whole origin to people I'm sure are familiar with it.

Xerxes: Did you get past the starting fair in Enchanted Arms? That twist near the start of the game was pretty impressive for a JRPG that's otherwise as utterly generic as EA is.
