I think that the sad thing is that there are several generations of gamers who only know Duke Nukem as a gigantic industry joke. Those of us who lived it, know Duke Nukem as the pinnacle action shooter. Taking the Doom and Wolfenstein concepts and honing them to a fine sheen. It was also one of the first, if not the first, shooter to really give the player a real character to play. You were the blending of John McLain and Rambo.

I would, judging from that screen shot, predict that the trailer will show absolutely no gameplay footage. Dukefrukem's description sounds spot on. Also, Duke looks hideous. He's got that ugly shiny action figure look that's so prevalent these days.

Duke Nukem was a satire of 80's action heroes. Great, that's wonderful, we all loved that. The problem is, action heroes have changed. They're not the 2-dimensional buffed out cliches we had twenty years ago. Well, we still have Arnold, but other than that...

The new action hero, the dark, brooding soul that carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, is ripe for satire. A game like Duke Nukem 3D, but with the satirical lens aimed at the new stereotype, would be great. Unfortunately, that requires a company with fresh ideas that works quickly, making a game that is relevant to the new media culture. What we're going to get is a joke that worked in the 90's pumped up and rehashed until it's a satire of itself.

I can say without certain that no game ever made an impact on me like Duke 3d. I have yet to play a game that had as many "Holy shit that is FUCKING AWESOME!" moments as Duke 3d had. I remember endless nights staying up "dukematching" people across the planet. Ah, those were the days, when no phone call ever got through to the home and a seperate phone line had to put in for the modem. I remember breaking toilets to drink their water to gain life when out of a medkit in a deathmatch. This was, nay, is THE GAME to which no game has ever been able to approach. People think Halo is a work of art and that Quake was something special.

Quake was just an engine with a game thrown in. Duke 3d had attitude, atmosphere, and unprecedented interactivity at the time. Perhaps it is best to leave Duke in the past. This game can't, won't, live up to the hype. Then again, in order to top Duke 3d, maybe it does take a decade of development.

3DR made the mistake of making a goal and going very public with it. I highly doubt that many of the people, who over the years mocked them for Duke Nukem, were even old enough to have played the original. STALKER, Halo, Prey, Team Fortress 2, Diablo 3, all did and have suffered huge developmental setbacks. Before Titan Quest was released, Blizzard was ready to announce the date when they would have Diablo 3 set, then they scrapped the whole project when compared to TQ and other RPGs coming out at the same time. I remember reading a Preview of Team Fortress 2 that had the designer touting a 1998 release.

You're so stuck on calling them bland that you didn't completely realize the kind of AI that you get to fight in the game on display there. Like in the original, the enemies can blindfire (as shown), work in groups and choose from multiple paths as well as cover them (shown as well). I agree with you that sometimes games need extra time, and we gamers should be grateful. Fair enough. Timeshift is a case in point, I heard it improved massively since its demo.

But what grates me is not the delays, its the arrogance and lack of transparency that George Brussard (sp) exhibits in rather large amounts. Had he said, "I'm sorry guys, I know you wanted to play this game, but we felt we couldnt ship it in this state. We'll keep you informed of how dev goes.", I would be happy.

No, he says something like, "It will be ready when its ready. STFU noob."

Thanks Brussard, I'll find somewhere else to spend my money.

Not to mention, the sheer amount of time, and number of engines this game has gone through suggests extremely bad planning at the least, and at the worst gross incompetency.

Valve has a history of coming through in the end, though, and destroying all expectations. They also got plenty of heat and mockery for their long-delayed games, but that's over now because the games are out.

DNF is currently the industry leader for delayed games, so it's going to take the most heat. It's also been shown twice already, running on two completely different engines, and has since been switched to a third or possibly fourth engine. That's just funny.

Yea. I'm mostly joking. I just find it funny/sad that this game has taken almost 11 years now and the forum people still drool without so much as a single dingleberry of content. I also find it funny that George B takes himself so seriously. Unfortunately for me, I'm a hypocrite and will most likely buy this game.

I think that the sad thing is that there are several generations of gamers who only know Duke Nukem as a gigantic industry joke. Those of us who lived it, know Duke Nukem as the pinnacle action shooter.
I remember flying around endlessly with the jetpack, shooting rockets at pigs that were flying airplanes or something. Awesome stuff (at the time).
