IGN's Top 100 Games of All Time (http://top100.ign.com/2005/index.html)
I'm not big into "top games list" (or IGN for that matter), but I was glad to see that the best Star Wars space sim of all time was in the top ten. Tie Fighter.
The game was simple, yet so complex. How come LucasArts has never been able to capture the magic that game offered? X-wing vs. Tie? meh...the other one I cannot remember where you can fly the Falcon? Meh.
Tie Fighter forever.
Editor's Note: What's your Top 3?

1) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2) Planescape:Torment
3) Diablo
I'm really a PC game kinda guy.
So my PC list would be:
1. Starcraft
2. DukeNukem3D/Shadow Warrior
3. Day Of The Tentacle

Tie Fighter forever.
Editor's Note: What's your Top 3?
I loved that game! Still have it at home somewhere or another. I should reload that thing and take my trusty Tie Defender out for a spin.
I always have a tough time defining a set of games as the "best ever." Seems like there's always something I've missed...but I'd have to say that my list couldn't be complete without Civ. Probably Star Fleet Command (I've been playing Empires At War thanks to a $8 price tag at Sam's) would be there too.
But there's an awful lot of the consoles I've enjoyed...resident evil, halo, eternal darkness, soul calibur, final fantasy tactics.
Crap! Only three? :(

I love reading lists like that. I might not always agree, but they get me all nostalgic and make me want to play them again.
My top 3, which isn't enough, but here they are in no particular order:
Super Metroid and Metroid Prime
Everquest
Zelda: A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker
I would really need a top 10. 3 isn't enough, so I added a few. :)
1. Half-Life
2. Zelda Ocarina of Time
3. Outlaws (by LucasArts actually)
Ask me again tomorrow and ill probably say something completly different, to many good games out there.

Quake II - Much more so than DOOM, due to widespread internet multiplayer + mods (largely SP mods\maps; I never met a QII mod I liked anywhere near as much as vanilla DM).
EarthSiege 2 - Cybrids rock. I don't care if Prometheus is just a SkyNet knockoff.
???? - This would probably be the MW4 series (Vengeance, Black Knight, and Mercenaries) just for the sheer length of time I've continued to play them.

The more I think about it the more I can't decide which 3 games are my favorite. If I based it only on how many hours I've played the game then my list would be:
1)SimCity 2000
2)Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast)
3)World of Warcraft
Arcon

1) Operation: Flashpoint

PC
1. Master of Magic (why this hasn't been remade is beyond me)
2. Civilization
3. Mines of Titan (I remeber playing this on the Apple IIe all the time as a kid, the memories are probably better than the game)
Console
1. Blaster Master (nice to see someone else have this on their list)
2. Gunsmoke (was a super hard ass game for it's day I thought)
3. Shining Force
zapata666

Not necessarily the top 3, but 3 games I would happily pick up and play at any time (in no particular order):
Day of the Tentacle
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Max Payne 2
TheKeck

It's so hard to lump all games into one category but here's a selection that doesn't necessarily reflect my "true" true favorites:
1) Half-life 2
2) Goldeneye
3) King's Quest 6
Murtaug
08-03-2005, 08:03 AM
1) Planescape: Torment
2) Age of Empires II (with expansion)
3) Any of the old Sierra/Lucas arts adventure titles (Kings Quest, Space Quest, DoTT, Full Throttle.. far to many great games to pick just one)

just 3 is NOT FAIR :P
1. WoW
2. Legend of Zelda or OOT (toss up)
3. Revenge of Shinobi (genesis)
half life should be in this list and soul calibur should be too ...maybe they can squeeze in there somewhere and OH mario 64... GAH
Slaughter
08-03-2005, 08:06 AM
Not a single mention of Fallout? Unusual...
1: Fallout (and it's sequel)
2: X-COM: UFO Defence (and it's sequels)
3: Master of Magic
@Ernst_Jager: Indeed! I've been wishing for a sequel to Master of Magic for a LONG time. Oh, and Colonization!

Yeah I call myself a gamer... No I didn't play FF7, sue me I didn't like RPGs then like I do now... Oddly enough it took Pokemon to let me see the not so badness of turn based battle... Tactic Orge (GBA Version), Golden Sun is was trully brought me back...
But everyone who I know tells me that is one of the best games they ever played... Hell if they do remake FF7 for ps3 i'll get one...
Regardless... One of my two all time favorites didn't make it and I'm shocked... Sure everyone goes on and on about RE4 (never played it, nintendo controllers turned me off from the system (put if cube drops price again ;-)), my hands were perfect for the xbox controller...)
My #1 game is like a toss up between the Metal Gear Solid and RE 2... Leon's first outing... Hell i'm interested in RE4 to see how the hell a rookie cop (boy was a rookie) ends up working for the president... I only know pieces of the story I might even got that wrong...

Wow. That list was all over the place. The top 20 were the fairly standard picks. So was the rest of the list. I take issue with God of War being at 32 and Ninja Gaiden not even making the list. IGN must love their block pushing puzzles.
Here's my top 3. I factor in most fun had playing. Not most influential or most innovative or best memories of.
1 Resident Evil 4
2 M.A.X
3 Planescape: Torment

Holy crap, Nintendo has 4 games in the top 10!!!!!!
I could never make a top 3. There are like 20 games that are my all time favorites. Here is a sample...
1. Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
1. Warcraft 3
1. Metroid (orginal)

I'd rather go with the top 100 influential games. Their position in it can vary from person to person obviously. While I'm not a fan of Pokemon, it was a defining game for the genre so I'm ok with that being on the list.
Some omissions:
Populous - Why this isn't on there I will never know!!! I could easilly throw out like 30 games from the list and replace them with this title.
Descent - Uhhh guys where is this game too? Hello???
System Shock- I would have preferred the original to be in the top 100 rather than its sequel though it is very good as well.
Heroes of Might and Magic - Again, a bit of a strange omission
Quake - I'd swap out Quake 2 with the original, only because I think the original was well 'original' and groundbreaking for its time. Certainly things today would be very different without Quake
Ultima Online - The deluge of MMORPGs today would not exist if not for UO (Let's face it Meridan57 didn't do that hot).
I regret that no true successor to TIE fighter has ever emerged :(

In no order -
Ultima 4

Final Fantasy 3 (6 etc etc)

A list without Gothic (1 or 2) or Morrowind... Some thing is serious wrong with it. No Diablo? Wonder what list they were looking at.
IGN has no credibility to throw out TOP anything lists, so I wipe my ass with their list, even if I agree with some of it.
My Top 3 of All time (because they changed the landscape forever):
1. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
2. Tetris (Any)
3. Doom (PC)
4. Street Fighter II (Arcade)
5. Gran Turisimo (PS1)
If we're just talking about games I think are fun:
1. Mr. Do (Arcade)
2. Samurai Shodown II (Arcade/Neo*Geo)
3. Miner 2049er (Atari/C64)
so there...

#1 Metal Gear Solid or RE2 (toss up, both were very cinamatic and had amazing presentation, even back on ps1)
#2 Halo (the first FPS i completed without burning up internally, i use to get hot playing any FPS must of been that keyboard and mouse, or the intense play i wasn't use to)
#3 It's a wild card... KotoR, again cinematic and the first rpg I completed not counting Pokemon Blue, but this had a non-turn based system and I didn't think such a RPG existed), not to mention I think it's the best use of the star wars lincense, even better than the movies or maybe WoW, i don't play much, and I feel weak as a warrior, I wish you could cross class like in guild wars, but that's another story... The game is pretty damn good regardless, I just wish there was some ultimate goal, a end of some sorts... Kind like how you BEAT pokemon or fable, but you can continue on...

I'm torn. After playing games for nearly 20 years, it's so hard to ignore my all-time faves that I played when I first got into it. Let's see...
1980s
1. Starflight (1987)
2. Wasteland (1988)
3. Ultima 5 (1987)
1990s
1. Ultima 7: The Black Gate (1992)
2. Civilization (1991)
3. Quake (1996)
2000s (so far, of course)
1. Diablo II (2000)
2. Warcraft 3 (2002)
3. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000)
That's a hard list to make. Gamespot's PC games list is remarkably handy, though.

Incidentally, I think it's only fitting that Super Mario Bros. was #1 over all. In my last semester of college (beginning of this year) my friends and I started playing it again and were totally hooked for a while. We spent an all-nighter trying to beat it as fast as we could. I was the winner with 5:47. We looked it up, and apparently the world record is 5:17. Amazing.

2. Halo (Original)

5. FF3(6)
6. Super Metroid
7. Half Life 2
Honorable Mentions
Baldurs Gate 2

here are the games that I have had the most fun with (in alphabetical order)
halo (xbox)
nhl94 (genesis)
super mario world (snes)
if I had to pick one "best.game.evar" it would prolly be super mario world... although halo is a very close second...
and I played HUNDREDS of games of nhl94 (nad the other genesis EA hockey games) with my firneds... thats why it makes it there..
edit: on second though, bump nhl94 in lieu of quake3... god that game was awesome...

Audience does not equal a "better" game, otherwise Halo 2 would be on these lists. It's about quality.
Edit: Heh, then you'd also have every EA sports title on the top ten lists as well, simply because they sell like hotcakes. Doesn't mean they're great titles.

I think rather than saying what I think the top 3 best games are I'll just go with the ten that I Enjoyed the most or had the most influence on me. (In no particular order) Of course, ask me next week and I'm sure they'll be slightly different.
1. Xcom - It was unlike anything I'd played before and I loved every minute. (Still awaiting a modern followup that comes close to the greatness of the original)
2. Master of Orion 2 - I've pumped more hours into this one than any other game.
3. World of Warcraft - First MMO that I actually played for more than a couple months.
4. Soul Reaver 1 & 2 - IMO the best storyline of any game I've played.
5. Halo - The first console FPS that I actually enjoyed. Before it, I just couldn't get past the controls. Halo felt perfect.
6. Super Mario 64 - I don't think a better 3D platformer has been made.
7. Herzog Zwei - One of my favorite two-player games ever and the first RTS I ever played.
8. System Shock 2 - This was one of the first games that really creeped me out.
9. Tetris - I think this is the best game ever made. Simple, fun, addictive, and it has truly withstood the test of time.
10. Metal Gear Solid - Just a great experience. The first game that really felt truly cinematic to me. I enjoyed every minute.

I was dissapointed with metroid prime's placing. It really is a great game and should unquestionably be ranked in the top 5 games this generation. i think that warrants it a better spot than 52 overall.
anyways i guess my top three based on time spent playing them would be
1. legend of zelda: ocarina of time
2. super metroid
3. half-life
but really, there's too many choices for me to make a real top 3.

I was pretty damn happy to see X-Com and Tie Fighter so high up. Nice to know that IGN isn't COMPLETELY full of shit.
And though I totally agree that Chrono Trigger is the best console RPG (at this point mostly out of nostalgia I will admit), where was Chrono Cross? I guess that was a love it or hate it game, but it's my view that it is the pinnacle of PlayStation RPGs, just as CT was the best of the SNES era.

Probably something along the lines of:
1) Grim Fandango
2) Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's Revenge
3) Team Fortress Classic - The HL mod
I'd just like to add this was a relative easy list to make because this isn't the first time I've sat down and thought about it and also my choices are based entirely on how much fun these games gave me.

man i get a little nostalgic looking through that ign list though. i remember playing dragon warrior when i was 10 and drawing a new picture of what i thought my guy looked like every time i got a new piece of armor or weapon. or playing wing commander 2... i don't think a story line in a game has ever affected me more.

Damn fellahs, some good games on these lists. Even some classics I forgot about, like Herzog Zwei and XCom.
It is near impossible to come out with a Top 3 list, it is WAY too short. I mean, when I was a little kid I played the hell out of Tie Fighter. But does that beat the experience I had with Baldur's Gate II, many years later, or does it beat the drunken frag fest I used to have with my buddies playing Halo 2? Who knows?!
Still, I'd like to see an Evil Avatar Top 100 list. I respect the gamers opinions on this site a lot more than I do the editors at IGN. Well, most of you anyway. Some of you really do suck. :)

Interesting. This could be done in the forums.
People could post their top ten in order and points are given to the listing of games. We then take the top 100 titles.
10 points for 1
9 points for 2
8 points for 3
We then set a limit on voting (when the voting ends) and then have someone tally up the results. I'd be up for tallying if people were interested.

Quest for Glory! Damn good one! Reminds me of Kings Quest too, good lord I LOVED those games. Ugh, everything is all about the graphics nowadays, but when you look back years ago, you could play those games forever, and still enjoy the hell out of them, even if they all looked liked (relative) shit. Well, relative when compared to real life, anyway.
Oooo, anyone remember the Kings Quest game where you needed to manual to look up the symbols for the rock wall? The one that would unlock "steps" when you put in the right "symbol", and if you missed one, you fell off the cliff into the shark-ridden water below? I CAN'T FIND THE BOOK!!!!

I could choose my faves that already got props (starcon2, xcom, MOO, quest for glory, sam n max, monkey island) but how bout
1. space quest
2. sundog (Atari 1040ST, AMIGA etc.)
3. duck tales (NES)
4. solar jetman (NES)
5. police quest
6. pitfall
7. tapper (i could play that ALL DAY!)
Oh and a big PUKE to #2 ocarina of time..
an NO shooters? (lifeforce, silpheed, 1942)
1: ESCAPE VELOCITY
2: TOTAL ANNIHILATION
3: QUAKE 2 CTF
All three of these games have consumed staggering amounts of my time.
Most people probably never heard of escape velocity, though. It was a mac
game, shareware. It was kind of like privateer, in that you flew around in a
dinky shuttle, ferrying cargo, and then moved up to fighters, and taking down
pirates, and then on to capital ships. What set it apart from most games is that
it supported a very easy to use plugin architecture. Users could create total
conversions, much like an FPS.

DUDE, Duck Tales for NES! I haven't thought about that game in the longest time! It was awesome. I have to disagree on Ocarina of Time, though. (And 1942 WAS on the list. Did you mean top 10, or something?)

Duck tales rulez all.

No apology necessary.
About Zelda, maybe the order should have been different, but as most people said, I like most of the games they picked, not necessarily the order IGN put them in. And to be honest, I never played A Link to the Past, so I couldn't say.

Good call. I owned that game at one point.
My top 3:
Ultima VII: The Black Gate
Planescape: Torment
System Shock 2
Not fair that the list is from my PC days. Let me add:
Mario 64
Zelda: ALttP or OoT
Tomb Raider (the original)
Bionic Commando
Oh fucking forget it. I'm just saying games I can think of now. Let's just say that Black Isle, Bioware before the Xbox, Interplay, LucasArts, Nintendo, Origins, New World Computing, Bethesda, Square, Enix and Capcom have been some of my favorite developers/publishers of all time. Lots of games like Fallout and Baldur's Gate and old gems like Bases Loaded and Chrono Trigger come to mind.
A top 100 list would be freaking hard for me. I agree...by listing the top games of all time we are liable to leave out gems. And by doing so, the Gods take notice and it throws the multiverse out of whack. I will agree that most of the top games of all time were released BEFORE this current generation of consoles...at least in my opinion.

You know, I have this old copy of The Realm sitting around that I got from my g/f. And I've always wanted to play it because it looks super-intriguing, but of course I can't get it to work on Windows XP. Any tips by chance?
SliceHiX
08-04-2005, 10:04 AM
Well, I don't know if the software you have will work. The Realm has been around for over 10 years now (I believe). First Online RPG I ever played, and still my favorite. I played it for a few years, from the days of alpha on. I even remember going out and paying like $120 or so for an 8mb (bringing me up to 16mb total, WOOT!) stick of RAM because I kept crashing. Originally, The Realm was made by Sierra (Makers of Space Quest, King's Quest, and my fav, the Quest for Glory series). Years later, it was sold to Codemasters. Codemasters had it for a few years, or so, and then it was picked up by Norseman, who currently have it today. If you are interested in checking it out the address is http://www.realmserver.com/ . You can DL the game there and it should work fine with XP. You get a free month trial also. Every so often, I get the urge to DL it and play, just for nostalgia. The level cap is insane (like 2000 or something). Just a warning though, it is a very dated game. The graphics are circa early 90s Sierra style.
This was the game that started me on my MMO addiction. From this, to Everquest, to AO, to SWG, to CoH, to WoW (with other less savory titles a long the way). Sorry I rambled on, but to answer your Q...like I said the download on the URL above should work fine with XP.

Ultima 7 is the epitome of a perfect game to me. Oh how I still cherish that game to this day. The music, the gameplay, the huge interactive world, the daily lives that every citizen lived...goddamn. Sometimes when you go back and replay games you find that they suck any you just remember them as being good...but U7 is not like that for me.
