View Full Version : US PSP update soon
Sony has said that the PSP software update out now for Japanese PSPs (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/nid/1132/) will be released for North American PSPs on August 12th.
The PSP's 2.0 software update adds an internet browser as well as other functions such as picture sharing, wallpapers, audio/video playback enhancements and other minor updates. If you are an owner of a North American PSP then we advise that you do not update with the Japanese software as according to Sony this will void your warranty.

Holy crap.
I've already had this update for a few days. I didn't know it was Japanese! After complaining about the need for hackers (http://getthesugar.blogspot.com/2005/08/i-dont-want-to-be-afraid.html) I have BECOME ONE!
Oh cruel fate!

Ugh. I really hate that they are actually making updating tempting. Why can you not embrace homebrew sony? Why?
The homebrew scene will take care of itself, even if the update makes it much harder for them to crack it. But the web browser really makes it hard to pass this up, not to mention all the media features it adds.

It would be OK if the homebrew scene was just homebrew. If it was only people coding apps that had nothing to do with running someone else's copyrighted material, then it would be great. However, at the same time, no one would care.
What people really want isn't "homebrew," they want emulators.
"Homebrew" also means running pirated games off the memory stick.
So, Sony has three options:
1) Allow people to run any sort of homebrew they want, by not tightenting security. This is beneficial in that it wiill draw people to the PSP because it can run emulators. Sony also can't be held responsible for people cracking into their security to run homebrew emulators. The problem here is that people will also find ways to run PSP games off the memory stick, which can cut into software sales.
2) Allow some soft of "application process" for homebrew. This would basically mean that people would send in their homebrew apps to Sony, and they would approve of deny them the ability to run it on PSP. This would allow for legitimite homebrew to thrive, while cutting out the PSP ISO loaders. At the same time, Sony wouldn't be very likely to approve emulators, which are what most people want from homebrew anyway.
3) Combat homebrew tooth and nail. This seems to be the route Sony is taking. Which is also, arguably, the most futile. The worst part about this route is that they're alienating customers, and reducing the amount of things the PSP can do. While homebrew may have a lot of emulators, there's a lot of other cool stuff the PSP can potentially do with homebrew apps.
I can't wait till they start cracking the firmware, so we can run homebrew and web browser.

The PSP browser is quite nice. However I think I need a bigger memory stick because I keep running outa memory on picture intensive sites, such as that Nintendo Tech Demo site. I only have 32MB. The wallpaper addon is REALLY nice too.
Check the file size of your new wallpaper, Intruder (I assume you used one)... seems like the wallpaper size affects the amount of memory available. Try and use 75k images or less and see if the web browser gets a little better. Also wait for the page to load completely before you scroll, that seemed to help too.

Didn't help. I turned off the Wallpaper even. I tried opening the tech demo page, the New City of Heroes powers screen shots and a FARK photoshop page, all ran out of memory. They display the text fine but this pics don't show. :(

No way I'm updating until all my homebrew apps (read: Tenchi web browser and SCUMM, NES, SNES, Genesis, MSX, MAME, and Game Boy emulators, as well as Quake and Doom) function under the 2.0 framework. I'm having a great time in 1.50 land myself. :D
