Wii.qj.net (http://wii.qj.net/Kynapse-to-be-available-for-Wii-game-developers/pg/49/aid/109001) caught word that Kynogon has released Kynapse for Wii, which will help improve AI and NPC behavior for future Wii titles.

Kynogon is especially proud of this big-time deal with Nintendo. Pierre Pontevia, Kynogon's CEO, said:

"Wii is a remarkable success and we are proud to offer Kynapse to Wii game developers. The unique capabilities of Wii allow developers to produce creative forms of gameplay that require innovative AI. Kynapse has been selected by a very significant number of industry leaders for the development of AAA titles."

All Kynapse tools and utilities can now be used to lend advanced behavior to NPCs in Wii games, such as providing advanced spatial reasoning functionalities to NPCs, enabling them to identify good hiding zones, threats, and paths just like human-controlled characters.

Hey man, couple typos there... It's Kynapse, not Kynaspe. Like Synapse.

When first I saw this post I thought Kynaspe would be some quirky foreign puzzle game.

Same here. Was kind of excited to see.

But I guess this is cool too. I guess.. Who knows what developers will bother using it?

*rolls eyes* I don't know, I just don't see the Wii having the CPU cycles to spare on good AI without other sacrifices. Not to say it can't be done, just that they'll need to cut back elsewhere to make it happen.

The thing that worries me most about the Wii is the fact that it doesn't have the CPU strength to have nice graphics and good AI (among other things). While I can can settle for games that have meh graphics if the gameplay is good, I defiantly don't want an ugly looking game with good gameplay.

I do rather enjoy watching the anti-Wii folks desperately clutching at straws these days.

"Wii has a higher number of exclusive titles than any other system!"
"Well... They're probably all going to be terrible!"

"They've released a development tool that allows for advanced AI to be more easily incorporated into Wii games!"
"Pssh... It's going to make all of their games look like crap! Who cares about art direction? The only measure of a game is it's raw graphical processing power!"

"This just in! Wii has released a new system update that helps you find true love!"
"Who cares if she's my soul mate? She's probably ugly. I mean, I want a girl with a good personality I guess, but I don't want her to be ugly!"

xD Come on. Are people honestly trying to skew this as bad news?

The Wii can have good graphics and smart AI at the same time. The Wii is more powerful then the original XBOX/PS2/GC and look at how good some of those games looked..God of War 2 on the PS2 looked as good as a lot of next gen games and don't tell me the PS2 is stronger then a Wii.

I don't see anyone trying to say it's bad news. It's just people expressing doubt that the Wii has enough CPU power to allocate AI middleware effectively. I think you may be reading a bit too much into things.

New tools to help Wii development? Sounds good to me. I wonder what two titles are already using the toolset.

For shame. Any dev tools on any system that will make for better games is great news. Stop being the pessimist for once and believe in a better future.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Wii has a dedicated physics unit. If the guys who make Kynapse are any good, there's a lot of AI stuff they can offload to that.
And remember, the Wii is the only next gen console with a dedicated physics processor.

As for the naysayers...yeah, all 286/386/486 games, all gameboy/colour/advance/psp games have shit AI.
