I am on the fence on this one. I love Metallica...but hated St. Anger

Anyway....from Ultimate Guitar (http://www.evilavatar.com/http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/metallica_to_premiere_new_song_in_rock_band.html)

Metallica are in talks to premiere the first single from their next studio album on a new version of the Rock Band video game.

MTV senior vice president of home entertainment, Paul DeGooyer, made the announcement that Rock Band manufacturer Harmonix and MTV are planning to premier a string of new songs on updated versions of the hit computer game, the biggest draw of which is Metallica.

He told Rocky Mountain News: "There are a couple of things we've committed to, one of them with Metallica for example. They've reserved the right to give us their first single from their new album for the game."

Apart from this golden nugget of information, there’s no hint of what the track is called or when it will see the light of day. Metallica are currently holed up in the studio working on their ninth studio record. Metallica fans are like battered wives...we keep getting hit in the face and yet still go back to them...

I like the two new songs they have played live. St. Anger was shit but the new album might be decent, nothing close to old Metallica though.

I love that Rock Band is now starting to be seen as a real platform for music, and that groups like Metallica are taking it seriously. But I, like CaptStu, have given up on Metallica.

Metallica died shortly after the self-titled album was released. Everyone knows this. So as far as this little piece DLC is concerned, count me out.

Everything between Justice and St. Anger was pretty weak, but St. Anger really grew on me. I don't like half the album, but the other half has given me hope. Frantic is a great song to run to.

This is the more exciting aspect of this for me too. While Metallica may not be the band they used to be, they are still a powerful force in the biz and it is exciting to think about what the future holds for gaming and music.

Cliff Burton rolls in his grave.

I disagree...although admit no will one will ever be sure. Everything I have ever read about Cliff points to him being a person who would have at the very least entertained this idea as a means of forwarding the music into another frontier.

Again, this is coming from a simple fan who has read a lot on the band's history and of Cliff Burton, however, it is only my opinion.

This isn't a big surprise. Apparently there was a hidden AFI track in Guitar Hero III that was just revealed. Radio stations here in San Fran have been playing it.

AFI sucks ass though, but it's still interesting.

a "new version" of Rock Band? as in a sequel? was hoping they'd push this platform without a sequel for a long while...This is Metallica we're talking about. It took them almost 3 years to squeeze out St Anger. And you know they weren't spending that time on slick production values.

Does it make anyone else uncomfortable when old media refers to these types of things as "computer games"?

Im not sure why, but it always makes me just shake my head at their antiquated worldview. Its not so much my desire for them to be "hip" or "with it", more just that this lack of precision bares their ignorance so blatantly.

I think we'll be seeing more and more of this type of cross-promotion and value-added type stuff in the entertainment industries as the big companies (slowwwwly) move towards new, more future-friendly business models. While I agree that it's exciting because it's so new right now, I could see this getting annoying pretty quickly.

Sure, everyone loves the Metallica/etc classics, and they are a safe bet as popular crowd pleasers on these games, but that's because they're classics. I'd hate to get a new crappy St. Anger-esque single that promotes an equally crappy new album instead of Creeping Death or some other equally awesome track just because the marketing/financial departments for both companies think it's a great idea (which it is, from a financial perspective). After the shininess and newness fades, I think we'll still be craving Creeping Death and be irritated at the commercial factor of this decision to include a money maker track rather than a more popularly known crowd pleasing classic, which has been the standard until now.

Lol, maybe some of you, but it was over when the Black album (Bob Rock's album) got released.

I remember the day Enter Sandman premiered on MTV, it was like the president getting shot, I will always remember where I was and what I was doing on that day because of how much that video/song sucked. Kill em all (metal up your ass), RTL, Puppets and Justice (and also g-days re-revisited).. that was Metallica; Bob Rock turned them into posers.

I cannot remember the day exactly, but I do remember everyone banging thier heads and going batshit insane for the song, and thinking that the song sucked and I must be in some bizarro world or something.

I played "Enter Sandman" with a couple of friends at the 8th grade talent show, in fact the drummer is now my roommate. I wanted to play Dyer's Eve, but we had to play something that people would know.

I guess I'm the one guy who thought St. Anger was pretty decent. It sounded like a garage band-produced indie release, or a band's thrashing rehearsal. It was raw and designed to irritate anyone who wanted a radio-friendly release.

I like it a lot better than a slick ballad or harmony song. I'm not sure why people who like their earlier, non-commercial stuff hated it. I'm not saying it was their best, but it wasn't bad at all. But like I said, the jury is in and most folks couldn't stand it.

I think it's cool to release a song in a game. It's good for the gaming industry, and that's good for us.

More like it was designed to irritate anyone with a working eardrum. I think Lars was banging on trash cans; Kirk was lazy as hell and did no solos; James sounded like he was sick the whole time; there was NO bass. Do I need to go on?

People also forget that Rick Rubin does work with the Dixie Chicks, and that a lot of people that used to work with him (the Beastie Boys and Glenn Danzig come immediately to mind) think he's a fucking scumbag. And that when he did the first Black Crows record, he wanted them to change their name to the Kobb Kounty Krows. And they were like, "But that spells out KKK," and he was like "Exactly."

So for those who are holding out hope that there might be a good Metallica album on the horizon, all I'll say is that it's nice to want something.

Regardless of the fact that Metallica has been terrible since Justice (and the St. Anger snare sound is fucking unlistenable), if this comes to fruition it will be a big deal. I just really hope that Harmonix keeps delivering DLC and doesn't make us rebuy the game on a disc every year.

Where else would they 'debut' a new single to get exposure?
On the radio? On MTV?

Given the participatory nature of the digital culture, ROCK BAND is one of the better places to get attention. That is, if you're against the idea of a Radiohead-style mp3 release.

For what it's worth, i've heard two early studio tracks off the new album (they've played them in concert as well): "Vulturous" and "Death is Not The End". They are both pretty bad. The chorus of Vulturous is Hetfield wailing "Whooooah" about 8 times. Pretty painful, actually. The lyrics on Death is Not the End are fairly awful as well.

I can't speak for the new producer, but if the new singles are any indication... ouch. St. Anger II.

On another note, I really hope that if they really are debuing the single this way, that it will be a free download. Pretty shitty if they decide that the fans will actually have to BUY the single unheard in order to 'preview' the new album.

i think every metallica album has been worth owning.....and yes, i loved st anger

it's like you people are against a band deviating from their original formula that made them a success........would you like an example of a metal band that hasn't changed at all? Godsmack......first album was awesome, and all the rest was just rehashes

i'm also a big Tool fan, and every album they put out is different.....you can see how they grow both musically and in life.....but i'm going to assume that most of you people on here will say "fuck Tool", or "Aenema was their last good album"......so i don't really think you'd be capable of enjoying the mutation of metallica going from metal to hard rock to raw-hard-rock

"they should only play metal for the rest of their lives! yeah!!!".....well if you want to hear Metallica play some speed metal, they've already recorded that.....go listen to it again......their first 3 albums are STILL fucking fantastic.....if you hate their new stuff, you can STILL listen to the old stuff you loved so much.....and i have to assume you did love them once, or else where are these feelings of hatred and betrayal coming from?

fucking bandwagon fans......i was a metallica fan in 1985......i am a metallica fan today

Angra - Aurora Consurgens
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Ayreon - The Human Equation
Kamelot - The Black Halo

And this is only dipping into two subgenres of metal, and a small part of them. Some of these bands are far more relevant today, and it still boggles my mind how Metallica still has so many fans that only listen to them with regards to metal with what's out there in metal across the board today.

Forgettable? You must not have listened to any of them because each one of those is far more memorable than anything Metallica has done. The new Symphony X album is very good (i.e. songs like Domination & Seven). Temple of the Shadows is hailed as one of the strongest metal albums out there, by lovers of power metal and many of those who don't normally listen to the genre, metalhead or not.

Metallica has been outclassed by incredibly many metal acts, and are pretty much dead as far as metal is concerned - their splash is nothing like Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, etc.
