Are you ready to return to the land of Big Daddys and Little Sisters? Because Bioshock downloadable content, as well as a patch, will be dropping next week for both the PC and Xbox 360. From Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50153).
2K community manager Elizabeth Tobey tells Shacknews that the DLC will at least include extra plasmids for players to mess around with, a way to disable Vita-Chambers for hardcore play, and bug fixes.
The patches will also address the game's field-of-vision perspective, following an intense bout of controversy over the way BioShock handles its widescreen display. No word yet on how much the DLC will run you, or what exactly it will include.
Editor's Note - Joystiq is reporting (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/30/bioshock-patch-free-dlc-due-next-week/) that the DLC will be free to 360 owners. Huzzah!

Nice, I've been thinking of playing through for a third time, now I have even more of a reason to.

I just started playing. I may hold off a bit now, in order to see what's on tap here.

Try beating it while saving all the Little Sisters. If you DID save them, and got the good ending, and aren't satisfied, then I suggest you get yourself an emotion chip, you goddamn robot.

So, this FOV fix confirms the problem in the first place?

This is free stuff right? I really doubt I'd be interested in paying anything for a few extra plasmids, some new levels would be nice but then they might as well work on a proper expansion.

It confirms that they listened to people. It's only a problem if you need that extra couple inches of view. It wasn't that big of an issue to most of the people out there. Sorry if your intention wasn't to dredge up hate, but that's just how I interpreted your statement.

Given that some of the new plasmids were originally meant to be in the game, thats not too surprising, but still really, really awesome.
Also, I wonder if they will nerf some old abilities, like Target Decoy that were just overpowered, or let you carry more cash? One can only hope.

Eh, I did get the good ending, but the true emotional pinnacle of the game is the part where you go to the little sister's orphanage thing, and they all talk about how you're their savior. But I want like a neutral ending or something.

I didn't need them to patch it to confirm to me that it was a problem. :D

I remember arguing with certain people here, at one time, because they were saying if plasmids were added it would be totally fine to charge money for them.
I'm glad the developers disagree with those people. This is what I hate about where Xbox Live has taken gaming. Everyone is so used to being charged out the ass for every little thing, that they will actually argue in favor of being charged even more!

It's good that they are patching the game... but holy shit. Little late with this patch, are they?
A user made fix for the FOV problem was out like 2 days after the game. Pretty sure most people have played through the game, at this point. I personally don't feel any need to play through this game again, even with new plasmids.
It was a good game, but it was one of those "okay, that was good... moving on!" type games, for me. Not something I would play more than once, or a second time, a year or two later.

Well that makes one of you. I already played through the game a couple times, but with new any new content, I'll be right back to play it again.

Why is it you feel the need to defend 2K et al when they clearly screwed up on this and then, essentially, lied about it when initially called on it?

I'm talking in terms of the developer. We all knew there was a problem.

What it shouldn't include is a new "area" to bioshock, at least per Ken L's interviews.

What I want to see in there: More Natural Camouflage.
Edit: I really don't want the patch fix if I can help it.

Because it was a non-issue that got blown way out of proportion because the game was that good?
"essentially" is a very stupid word to use in an argument. As it means "I'm interpreting this how I want to, so don't take me serious."
They made a great game and some people got their panties into a twist over some vertical space that was never really used anyway.

so if the 360 ver did end up having stuff that wasn't free, what happens with the PC upgrades? Do the PC users get stuff for free that the 360 people have to pay for or does MS have a system set up for PC users to pay for patch content too?

Seen both endings during the first week. Don't know if I will bother with the meager extra content anytime soon. Maybe in a year or so.
Hmm.. I must admit that I could not play through it again. I LOVED it, but the world is just to weird and gory. I played through System Shock 2 many times, but I guess I just like it in space. I hope they do not make a Bioshock 2, but rather some different universe. I think they had a nazi-theme to begin with, for Bioshock. I kinda wonder how that universe would have been like? Perhaps mixing the 2?
The adam, Big Daddy and little sisters just didn't make any sense. They had been there for ages, but are still killing each other off. How is that possible? Why are there still so many left? Hmm..
You can see both endings by opening the cinematic in the game dir.
I think you need to download rad gametools to see it.

Agreed. Although the new content could tempt me back.

I just got my copy of Bioshock this week. Rented it in September, just bought it on Black Friday for $30. Restarted my game, but I hope I'll still be playing when the DLC is available.

You can certainly find some deals around on the game. I got it for $49.99 online (no tax or shipping) with a copy of The Darkness, which I sold for $29.99. $20 for Bioshock is nice!

What exactly makes you think that they had been left there for ages? -raises eyebrow-
SPOILARS!
The main character was revealed not in fact to be a random traveler stumbling by chance upon Rapture but to be a pawn created by Fontaine as a secret weapon in his power struggle with Ryan. And keep in mind, Fontaine's pet scientists created a method of speeding up development in their experiments (ie: you) increasing aging to a much faster rate.
Though Rapture was certainly leaky and rundown in places, it obviously wasn't abandoned. The splicers used to be citizens. The Little Sisters used to be children. The events detailed in the tape journals weren't decades distant. They were all records of recent history, many of them occurring very close to the beginning of the game.
This is what made the journals so compelling for myself personally. The people you listen to aren't long dead historical figures. They're people that you can meet, or people whose corpses are barely cold. People you can kill. You aren't just learning the history of Rapture. You're writing the end of it.

Brother, if Qoz has those kind of problems, clearly he wasn't paying enough attention, and there is no help for him :)
Even though I really enjoyed Bioshock, I too don't think I would want to play through it again. For one thing, it took a long frickin time to finish it playing on weekends. Damned job.

I still haven't finished this game. :o
I really need to get back into it, but Viva Pinata took up a lot of my time, and now that I've bought Orange Box and Carcassonne, I doubt I'll even finish VP anytime soon.
Too many games! :D

I would definately finish my third time when this comes out. I stopped in the middle somewhere. I think it was right before Cohen found me.
Damn, and I just finished this last night!
I wasn't planning to play it through a second time, but this might tempt me for the extra plasmids. As for the field of view "discussion", I have this to say:
I found myself constantly switching away from the crossbow because it was taking up a lot of screen real estate. Any extra space is only going to be a good thing to me!

Does anyone play with Framerate Unlocked? I find the game is much more smooth this way. Some screen tearing (I think that's the term for the condition I see) when I turn, but otherwise the game really runs better. The 360 version seems to have a forced framerate, but depending on your television you might benefit from unlocking it in the options menu.

You are a pussy. That ending was one of the biggest pieces of sappy bullshit that I have ever seen. I wish to unleash my hellish minions upon the defenseless masses.
