Worms 4: Mayhem is a return to the series' trademark gameplay and sees Team 17's core Worms design and development team regrouping for a game of explosive annelid annihilation.

Codemasters has released an updated demo with new content (including maps and weapons), and also updated code correcting some issues of the first demo.

Grab the Worms 4: Mayhem multiplayer demo (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=27055) (268mb) off WorthPlaying.

Why do you never link to the actual download?

This is going really well. First I get a virus alert about a 'probably unknown NewHeur_PE' virus, then I get en error about a missing 'Language Independant' file. Downloaded it from codemasters.com.

Edit:
From Codies: 268MB
From WP: 290MB
From Filefront: 148MB

Varsity, because the main article body usually lists more details and indepth info about the demo, patches and so forth.

My typo btw, its 268, not 290mb, and Filefront is just listing it wrong, the full file is there (I just verified).

Am I just lame, or does anyone else think that the 3D version of Worms just doesn't work? I loved Armageddon and World Party (pretty much the same game), but I just can't get into these "new-fangled" ones.

I agreed with you when I tried the Worms3D demo, but I tried the SP worms 4 demo (a month ago?) and fell in love with it. It's easy to play, very nice looking, great action, and lots of fun. My son and I play hot seat all the time in it.

I got in the beta for this online game you are all downloading 3 weeks ago, and it's just incredible. I think this game will be a real winner, since just this little taste (a few maps, a few game modes, just a handful of weapons and options) is really addictive and just a blast.

I can't recommend this enough, for fans of the series. Or even for new players. I even re-installed Worms World Party and was surprised to see I missed the 3D enironments! That was a creepy moment of realization.

I've got to agree. The SP demo was a fine return to form for the series.

Has anyone got a working copy yet? From what mirror?

I was issued an e-mail as a beta tester I thought I'd share with everyone, that the version of the online demo that was released actually missed out on several small fixes, including a fix to the Ninja Rope, that *will* be in the initial patch for the PC version, coming out next week.

The online demo should still be very close to the actual game code, and the fixes were all really minor, but I thought I'd mention it.

Well, I do have to admit that Worms 4 did seem significantly easier than Worms3D did when I tried it. Maybe I'll have to give it more of a chance...

OK, got it installed. I love it already. It's simply a blast to play. The custom worm models are brilliant (although I didn't find much in the demo to go with my Radio 4 presenter team) and make a real difference. It's still got the crazy gameplay, like jetpacking up a tall tower to plant dynamite then jetpacking down in the last few seconds and lobbing a holy hand grenade at someone's feet and seeing how high you can get them.

Oh yes, and it looks superb. No soft shadows or bump mapping but that doesn't matter, the art direction is brilliant. Related to that is the terrain which now destructs far better now, with smoothing between the grid points. Large explosions still create jaggy holes but it's probably better off that way.

I'm suing Codemasters, the public at large, Bruce Campbell, and everyone else I can think of because I accidentally de-compiled the demo's executable, accidentally introduced several shocking and disturbing worm-sex sequences, accidentally re-compiled the code, and accidentally allowed my four-year old to play it for several hours.

He will never be the same.

Something must be done to protect my son from this type of filth!

You've got to be kidding. I've always thought worms was overtly sexual without the need for mods of any kind! ;)

Am I the only person who didn't enjoy this game all that much?

I was lucky enough to have access to the review code about a month or so ago and while the game is a step up from Worms 3D it still is no where near as fun as the 2D games.

I say keep the 3D graphics but lets take the playing fields back to 2D.
