Design Interact has a rather interesting (http://www.designinteract.com/features/) article about how the new XBox 360 user interface was designed, what ideas are behind it and what the goals are.
The design that began to emerge was quick and easy to use. It has 32 pieces of content grouped under 4 headings. Users navigate using color-coded “blades” that slide open when activated. Overall, the goal was to make the design as minimal and functional as possible.
Never underestimate a good UI.

The UI looks intresting, appealing and easy to use. I'm glad MS invented 'blades' to make things easy for us :D

4 words I love to see when describing a UI. Minimal, functional, quick and easy-to-use.

Combine those 4 things and you'll never go wrong, IMO.

We don't, we've played WOW

UI and control is almost everything. Think about it, if the player/user can't interface with your application effectively, the rest is for naught. Poor controls have killed many a great game (but that's partially dependent on how tolerant you are, I'm not so tolerant anymore heh). Gothic 2 springs to mind for me.

That's what happens when you put something through a million focus groups -- a boring, watered-down thing with no personality at all. At least the Xbox interfaced looked cool.

It took Microsoft's team of thousands to invent the "tab" -- oops, I mean "blade". What an innovation.

Perhaps they spent too much time focused on innovating around the concept of an inhale?

I wish game developers would bother to go out and contract some interface designers for their games.

I'd like to focus on the concept of an inhale, but I'm out of pot.
