Cube.IGN (http://cube.ign.com/) has posted a preview (http://cube.ign.com/articles/637/637472p1.html) including in-game footage of the upcoming 3rd person action game, Spartan: Total Warrior.

Here's a bit about the game.

And now, Creative Assembly (Rome: Total War) plans to evolve the formula made popular by Dynasty Warriors with its upcoming Spartan: Total Warrior. Players will assume the role of "The Spartan," a hero in the Spartan army who must defend his city from legions of Roman invaders. And by legions, it should be understood that you, the player, will need to butcher thousands of soldiers in real-time before game's end. Every swing, thrust and parry will be entirely up to you. Granted, this level of freedom and control is nothing new, but it certainly feels that way when facing swarms of Roman legionaries, all of whom want you dead and buried.

Release Date: 09/27/2005 (XBOX (http://www.gametab.com/xbox/spartan.total.warrior/4180/), GCN (http://www.gametab.com/gcn/spartan.total.warrior/4181/), PS2 (http://www.gametab.com/ps2/spartan.total.warrior/4182/))

Tasty!

I fail to see anything of interest in this game. I can't imagine how it is to play a game in which fighting wave after wave of foes is all there is.

Edit: I understand those chaps have a game to sell but after seeing all those videos where everyone claims how 'amazing' and 'unheard' the number of units on screen is, I remembered KUF: The Crusader could have up to 200 units on screen at once.

Yeah. I heard a lot of boasting about having a thousand units on each side of a battle and blah blah, but I only saw a few dozen on screen, if that. Haven't implimented the whole 'big' thing, yet? Is that going to be a shader you add later?

I'm pretty disapointed with what I've heard about this game, so far. Being a Spartan warrior in the midst of enormous battles could be really, really fun, but they're going WAY to generic with it. I wouldn't mind seeing a game in which on well-placed slash of my sword will kill most enemies outright. I mean, I've supposedly got THOUSANDS of potential enemies to kill, so why not? Or how about giving you changing orders throughout a battle? "Your commander says your legion needs to go here and hold this line," followed by "ok now your legion is going to go circle this way and take out some archers." You know, make you feel like you're part of the battle. Gain prestige in the army as your skill becomes known, blah blah.

From all I've seen, this is an UTTERLY typical brawler.

You know, I like this trailer. That's the first time in a long time I've been able to say that about a Sega trailer.

We live in sad days.

Anyway, I hope the game is good.

If they were putting you in the middle of a structured, historical battle that might be good, Hostile Waters style. But of course they aren't.

Games based in Ancient Greece always interest me, dunno why. Anyway, it looks like it could be worth a rental, although the fact they included a flame thrower as a weapon has really made me worry.
