1UP.com (http://www.1up.com/) has a report (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3142401) up filed by CGW Editor Darren Gladstone from Microsoft's Meltdown event that took place Tues. and Wed. in Seattle. It includes some first screens from Beta 1 of the next version of Windows "Vista."

The Group Manager of Windows gaming and graphics sat me down for a look at Beta 1 of Windows Vista. The first thing I noticed, but didn't say, "looks kind of like Mac OS X." Before some heads roll at Microsoft for me making the comparison, this isn't a bad thing! Not at all. After all, wasn't Windows originally based off a Mac-like interface? And that worked out pretty well, right?

I can't believe grown adults are attending this thing (http://www.microsoftmeltdown.com/).

Not a whole lot of information in the article, but I liked it. I'm getting more comfortable with Longh... I mean Vista the more I read about it. Particularly the 64-bit jump, and the intent to revitalize the PC gaming industry in games stores. So the games aren’t pushed to the back where they're forgotten and ignored.

I'm not convinced that making games a more prominent part of the OS is going to help raise them out of their current quality quagmire, myself.

Obligatory hostile rebuff!!

Seriously, though, I love the idea that they are specifically targeting gaming as an area of improvement. As long as I can't play 99% of games on a Mac, it will have 0% appeal, to me at least.

Well I work in both Os's. I love XP.

Looks like were going to be spending a whole day shutting crap off though. I imagine the final DRM and other stuff no one uses will double the size of the OS foot print. maybe that's what they mean by Vista

Not true. My dual g5 plays WoW, unreal tourney 2k4, Sims 2 (although i can't stand the sims), doom 3 and so on. Granted the ports sometime take forever to come out. I spend most of my time in WoW gaming although I'm a console gamer at heart. It's also nice to have a rock solid OS that will manage my photos/music, let me create music, author dvd's, create websites, sync my calendar and a ton of other things with such style and grace. OSX is amazing. I have to defend my OS of choice when I see a comment like that :) Don't knock a mac till you try one hehe.
.

Next year when the Intel macs come out, hopefully the delay in porting will be much less.

You just quoted yourself. That's brilliant. I want to be important enough to quote myself.

As long as my whole body doesn't turn out to be purple, then we're gold. Get it? Gold?

I'll be here for at least another fifteen minutes.

Let me start again: As long as I can't play 99% of games on my Mac (this is in dispute), and as long as I'm sticking with the greatness of OS X, then Vista will have 0% appeal, to me at least. And that's why I have an Xbox. Alright, carry on.

Oh whatever. Everyone will use Vista.

Ha ha ha. :) I wasn't actually meaning to claim importance. I was just trying to connect my two posts. Funny comment, though.

Ok ok, so my 99% statistic may have been a BIT of an exaggeration, but for my purposes, anyway, I stand by my comment.

(I respect completely those who have different priorities than me as you obviously do, as well as Mr. Gravey.)

Actually 99% seems about right. I'd say there is probably one Mac game for every 100 PC games. This is of course counting the huge number of crappy PC games that get released every year. When it comes to games you'd actually want to play I'd say that 75% of good games probably aren't released on Mac.

Honestly... I think Windows Vista looks more like the Mac OS than ever.

Also, why do I get the impression that, VISUALLY, they are just incorporating stuff from Object Desktop by Stardock? (http://www.stardock.com)

Weird.

As long as proprietary hardware like Graphics cards are made specifically to utilize software like direct x, I will stay with windows. Granted we know we can run games like Doom 3 on a G5, but at what price? (Long delays on ports, cost and buggynesss). If direct x Next comes out to be half of what it claims I probably will stay with vista. As for as the next gen console excuse goes for everyone when sticking with OSX, I have to say alright, but in what sense are these next gen systems when they are running on current gen hardware, Cell is a multicore cpu yes, but athlon already has their x2's out with quadcore by january as well, Intel has pentium d, You have a 7800GTX in the ps3, which they claim is a sli 6800ultra, and of course the ati card in xbox360 that claims it goes beyond direct x9, we have yet to see this hardware in actual action considering the xbox360 games at e3 where running on radeon x850xt's. I guess this all sums up to are you willing to buy a mac along with a console or just a really expensive pc for your priorities. Forgive my spelling :).

I can't believe none of you mentioned this little morsel...

'and that Sony Online Entertainment is actually trying something really ambitious in cross-platform gaming for its next big effort.'

I wonder what they know and we don't. Could Sony be planning a Xbox live type service linking in with PC's for extra functionality like 360? Ooooooooooh. :p
