The Register has a news (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/28/graphics_chip_market_q2_05/) item about the market shares of graphic chip companies. Apparently NVidia didn't do so well, but they are expected to catch up again in the near future.
Nvidia is likely to fare better during Q3, thanks to the launch of the GeForce 7800 series and, more importantly given the structure of the market, its first integrated graphics chipset, 'C51'.

"First" integrated graphics chipset? What about nForce 2?

The 7800 GTX is an awsome card because it is way ahead of its time. Nvidia really did an awsome job with this card. I cant wait until the price goes down so I can SLi the one I have.

I never trusted ATI cards at all. Every ATI card ive played and worked on messed up on me with things like texture and display problem in Maya,3ds max, and most games.

It seems to me with the dominance of SLi and PCI E performance Nvidia is going to do very well.

Funny, I don't trust Nvidia. Probably has something to do with cheating on benchmarks and sabotaging games...

What's so ahead of its time in 7800? I thought 6800 was a great future-proof (SM 3.0) card, 7800 certainly isn't.

Ya, but do you do any graphics development? ATI drivers seem to be getting much better for games but most developers that I talk to, that do development on open source platforms, prefer nvidia. Their drivers are much more solid in linux than the ATI drivers.

ATI did the same thing as well. I still don't understand it either way. If the game runs better, looks better for you...who cares how they do it.

The 7800 is future-proof (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=24955)? Seems more like a faster GF6. How about actually getting the best available rather than relying on names? Just because something hasn't worked in the past doesn't render future iterations obsolete.

I've switched from ATI (Rage) to nVidia (GF3) and back (AIW 9800 Pro) and I'm calmly waiting for all the contestants of this new battle to come to the field. I don't understand the need to convince people that your decision is the best. If someone has found something that works for them so be it.

If nVidia comes out with a better performing card with media features akin to the AIW then I'll get that, if it doesn't then the best card, for me, may well be ATI. They're both awesome and I'm glad they're pushing each other to greater heights.

Yeah I do actually, not Professionally, but one of my hobbies is 3d modelling and Animation. I've been doing it for about 4-5 years..

Here is my 3d GBA:

trilogy : VERY NICE

the geforce 7800 gtx went below 50 fps on the F.E.A.R. stress test at max settings........so its DEFINATELY not ahead of its time....and that game has yet to implement SOFT SHADOWING! so more framerate hits are due.

No, the game itself is ahead of its time.

The fact that a GTX costs over $500 tells me it is way ahead of its time. :-)

Good comments. It seems like everyone has to argue that what they have is the best so that they feel good about buying it. I've had mostly ATI cards, myself, but that's just because they have typically been the ones I could get a better deal on. If I could have gotten a comparable nVidia card for cheaper, I would have gone that route instead. The best thing, as you mentioned at the end, is the competition between the two companies. As long as they're spurring each other to keep advancing cards at breakneck pace, more power to both!

Thanks :) My post was a bit off Topic, so one day I might make a gfx thread for people to show off any Graphics they have made..
