I like the concept of an online cover story, though a new SC doesn't exactly set my pulse racing.

What I don't get is the lack of a Xbox port. I mean, this looks like shit compared to its last iteration.

/sigh

It will still play the same. Not even sure why I'm wasting my time. Some people just see pretty pixels and not the game behind it.

Soul Calibur for Dreamcast still remains the best fighting game ever, especially with the arcade sticks.

And F Namco for the PS2 exclusive.

What always cracked me up (don't get me wrong, I loved SCII and I'm sure I will love SCIII) is that the Dreamcast version looked so MUCH nicer than the PS2 version. The Xbox version looks even better yet, of course, but what can you do? *sigh*

What I can do is keep in mind that "exclusive" rarely has much meaning these days... so I will either wait for it to stop being exclusive or I will wait for Soul Calibur 4. I do own a PS2, but I'd really rather not deal with the poor graphics or the poor controller.

I love SC, but this doesn't seem to offer much past the DC version. If it ain't broke don't fix it, I suppose, but I'll probably just stick with playing the DC version. Damn, it's a good game.

Fact is, the series was destroyed when the 2nd was concieved. Like many have said, Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast is the best yet.

And to Blue...why I would want an XBox version over PS2? Did you see the game in 720p on the XBox? Possible Live! support?

But I agree with you here. Too many people whine about graphics like the little bitches they are(check any Xbox 360 thread), but here the point is about having the game on a superior console if I had the choice. But shit. Namco blew it with Soul Calibur 2. Might as well keep it as a PS2 exclusive.

If I had a choice, sure I would want it on the Xbox as it will look prettier, load faster, and I'm more used to the controls. But, the main complaint with it not coming to other hardware (aside from it either "not making sense" or just because some will miss out) is that the PS2 isn't as powerful a machine graphically as the other two. So what. And I guess I too don't care about Live support as the fighting games I've played over Live have been garbage and the frame rate drops below slide-show quality. It would be great if it was there for me to choose to use or not, but oh well. Won't make or break the game for me at all.

I'm just sick of people moaning about graphics when they already know the game is going to be top-shelf. Having grown up with just an NES, I suppose I've more come to appreciate gameplay over the amount of filler I can cram onto a screen. It's almost like people refuse to appreciate what they're given. I would like it on the Xbox. It's not going there. The game is still going to be one of the better ones I own.

Owning all three consoles the fact it is PS2 exclusive doesn't bother me in the slightest. It would be nice to see it on a more powerful consoles but regardless its all looking pretty good to me. Bring it on Namco.

Those videos were all so hyped up to make me want the game that somehow I want it less after seeing how cool the game looks.
I couldn't care less about making my own character, to be honest, but I do love the gameplay of SCII (I barely played SC on Dreamcast) so I'll probably pick it up at some point.

Holy crap what are you smoking?
Whatever it is, please do not give it to me.
Soul Calibur III's graphics will look arguably better than DOA Ultimate.

Have you not seen Tekken 5 yet?
It is easily the best looking fighter on PS2 by a very large margin.
And I don't recall complex fur shading in any Dead or Alive game.

Soul Calibur 3 will be beyond even that game, which is already better looking than DOA3, and in a few stages holds its own with Dead or Alive Ultimate.

Check out theReview (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/tekken5/review.html) at the Xbox biased Gamespot. And if you get time be sure and download or watch the Video Review (javascript:launchGSL("/live/streamer_new2.html?title=Tekken+5+Video+Review&path=tekken5_ps022505vrs.asx&pid=920588&ppath=ps2%2Faction%2Ftekken5&ksubmoid=&urdate=1109232000", "", 718, 500)).

And if your lazy, or simply unable to read at this stage in your life, I'll sum up the graphics portion of the review.

The fighters in Tekken 5 hit hard. That's one of the major factors that makes the game look so fantastic. The moves look like they hurt. This is something that many other fighting games seem to miss, but here, even the most basic dashing punch moves practically look like they're capable of shattering every bone in your body. Part of that is due to the great-looking particle effects that blast off of heavy hits, but a great deal of it is also due to the game's outstanding animation. The characters move extremely fluidly, and the motion-captured movements are really, really cool, even though some of them have been recycled from previous games.

When it comes to image quality and character models, you'd be hard pressed to find a better looking PlayStation 2 game than this. Tekken 5 looks simply astounding--way above and beyond what you would think the PlayStation 2 is capable of. The character models are smooth and lifelike, with skin tones and textures that make them look alive, as opposed to the plastic-looking fighters found in some other games. The backgrounds are widely varied, and some of them are even breathtaking. Again, it's the sort of stuff you'd expect from a high-end Xbox title or a great-looking PC game--not something you'd expect from the PlayStation 2 hardware. From the fight arena that surrounds you with bloodthirsty onlookers and their van--which happens to be hanging from a hook a few feet above the ground--to the inside of a temple that happens to be on fire, you'll find a wide variety of amazing stuff here. This may be the PlayStation 2's best-looking game to date, and it's hard to imagine anything else topping it this far along in the cycle. Support for widescreen displays and progressive scan support only helps to make the image look that much better. But make no mistake, Tekken 5 looks incredible regardless of the mode you run it in, and the quality of the visuals of course helps make the action itself that much better.

I have no idea what THEY are smoking. As an owner of both Tekken 5 and DOA Ultimate I can say that Tekken 5 is a very sexy PS2 game but it is not as visually stunning as DOA:U.

Tekken 5 is the better fighter but hand off it... it does not look as good as DOA:U, fur shading or not. Just because a game engine uses some fancy feature that another game doesn't does not instantly make it beter. That is like saying JSRF looks better than Doom 3 simply because JSRF uses cel shading and Doom 3 doesn't (Although a case could be made on artistic merit that JSRF looks better than Doom 3 but that's an argument for a different day).

That's true and I appreciate the reply.

I agree with you, DOAU does come off looking better than Tekken 5. I just can't understand how it is now the year 2005 and the PS2 is "once again" proving itself with games like God of War, Tekken 5, and GT4 in 1080i. Yet Soul Calibur 3 is announced as PS2 exclusives and Xbox fangirls assume it will have worse graphics than Soul Calibur 2? Anyone with common sense should know, especially after seeing Tekken 5, that Namco understands the PS2 hardware now and I would not be surprised if Soul Calibur 3 easily holds it's own or beats Dead or Alive Ultimate in terms of graphics. While that doesn't mean PS2 is as powerful as the Xbox it does prove there was far more power under the hood than people realized.
