View Full Version : THEY DO! Kaz Confirms 40GB PS3 Chip Rumors

Despite previous rumors being thrown out the window by Sony, 1Up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164281) reports that Kaz Hirai himself has come forward and confirmed that the 40gb PS3's DO have the smaller 65nm Cell chips.

Kaz Hirai has come forward to clear the matter up, and it turns out both reports were right: the 40GB PS3s do have the 65nm Cell chips, but they also still have the 90nm RSX graphics chips. Both reports were also correct regarding power usage, as Hirai noted the smaller, more efficient Cell chip alone was enough for a considerable reduction in consumption.

Um, hi. I am the left hand of Sony. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the right hand is up to these days. See, we don't keep in touch with each other.

More like penis meet hand if you ask me. Ack. Bad analogy. The stroking was last year.

Stupid question anyways. It is the end result that matters and the 40gb is delivering that result, lower power consumption and less heat.

If you want to make a funny video for youtube visit a gamestop and discuss the differences between 65 and 90nm with the employees and the customers.

This confirms all those rumors that nobody actually cared about outside of the SDF.

Why the hell did they first deny that their product actually spends less electricity and produces less heat? In words of the great Angry Videogame Nerd: What were they thinking?

The SDF doesn't care either, unless the D stands for Detractor instead of Defender. The last people who really cared about nm were in the market for a new 360.

LOL! I agree. I was thinking wtf? Did he read this thread? It's a negative spin on confirmation that the PS3 is using the smaller, cooler, and less power consuming chip. It's not "SDF" making a big deal about the chip.

It's times like this I think of my favorite line from Full Metal Jacket:

"You better get your head and your ass wired together or I WILL take a giant shit on you."

um forgive my ineptitude, but what does this mean to the average playstation buyer?

Why is it important? (not against the thread, trying to figure out the importance of the chip)

Those are good questions. Basically, (1) Absolutely nothing. (2) It's not important at all... but there is an extremely geeky portion of gamers that are curious about every tiny little variation in the internal circuit boards even though it means nothing for the gameplay experience, and like looking at photos of disected PS3s (http://pocketnews.cocolog-nifty.com/).

To the average person, not TOO much. However, if you're energy-conscious, you'll be happy to know that the chipset apparently takes a lot less power (according to Kaz) to run.

And it should be quieter, since it doesn't need the fan to spin as fast to cool the system.

90nm RSX graphics chips

You mean the NVIDIA 7800 GTX that I had in my PC years ago? I'm surprised that they haven't been able to shrink that down yet.

(As a side note, gaming press- it's the PS3's inferior [by today's standards] GPU that makes it perform worse. Sony changing the name on it did not make it custom).

But when they do get together they fight....the consumer.

Why would they even deny this? It's a good thing, right?

Compared to what? Hopefully you're not talking about the 360 as the only edge the 360 has is ram, while the PS3 can offload lots of graphics work to the SPEs which are great are certain types of graphics work. If Ratchet and Clank FToD is the product of inferior graphics, then long live inferior graphics. :)

If you're comparing to PC then it really goes without saying, all of the consoles are inferior to the latest PC graphics, but then again they're cheaper to get into.

The 360 actually has a custom chip from ATI that is roughly a generation ahead of their last batch of DX9-only chipsets. It doesn't have any PC counterpart. Trust me on this- I'm a GPU nut. But if you don't believe me, look it up.

They didn't deny that the new 40GB consumed less power. The first inquiry to Sony had them denying that the new chipset in the PS3 was 65nm.

All reports have ... reported that the new PS3 uses less power than the 20/60/80GB models.

So, other than the lack of Memory slots and the backwards compatibility for which I don't really care about, are there any other drawbacks to purchasing a 40Gb model? My primary use for this would be for BluRay movies and the occasional game like Ratchet and Clank.

If you still have a PS2, getting the 40gb model should be automatic.

So the more expensive (better?) PlayStation 3 have chips that are not as good as the 40 GB version? When will Sony make a 65nm Cell chip for the 80 GB version? I am waiting for the right time to buy a PlayStation 3 which might not happen for a few years. I would like the backwards compatibility, hence why I would like the 80GB version to have the quieter and less-power-hungry chips.

Sucks that Sony did not put a better GPU inside the PlayStation 3. I think it is hurting the potential of the Cell.
