Passing along more video game-to-movie news, it seems Universal will be handling the transition of bringing Sony's God of War to movie theatres.
Universal Pictures has secured the movie rights to video game God of War, created by Sony Computer Entertainment. Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner will produce the feature adaptation.
That's about all the details so far, AICN (http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=20854) broke the story first, which first appeared in Variety.
While I think a tale of gods and beasts in ancient Greece is an awesome premise, isn't there a ton of other games that deserve a movie ahead of Sony's hack fest? *cough-Snake Eater-cough*

Who comes up with these ideas to turn games into movies? Few games deserve it...

Snake Eater huh, I tried to finally start up that game a couple of weeks ago and couldn't stand it. I'm a huge fan of the first two Metal Gear games (thats right, I liked the second one) but this one didn't hit the spot for me. I need to give it a second go.
On the subject, the game was cool, but how the hell do they expect for this one to translate into a movie? Shit is just being licensed out nowadays, regardless if it makes sense as a movie or not. I guess in the end it is all about money, right?

It's probably gonna end up looking like American McGee's "Jason and the Argonauts".

Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Pinky?
Sure, Brain...but how are we going to get the skeletal warriors into those skimpy bondage harnesses?

All jokes aside I think Vin Diesel would play a GREAT Kratos. The whole time I was playing God of War I was thinking how cool he'd be playing the main role in the movie adaptation.
edit: You won this round Kagger... this round.

wow, that's a quick turnaround! (IMHO this could b great, and yes, i vote for vin diesel, too)
is it just me (and my co-workers) or has hollywood actually ran out of ideas completely. i mean, are writers just not respected/rewarded these days or what? if it's not a successful comic-series they can fuck-up-and-still-make-an-assload-of-dollar then it's a successful game. grr.

I think a lot of the good writers have abandoned movies for longer form storytelling like TV shows. Of course, this is just off the top of my head and is likely completely wrong, but hey, so is most of what I post here.

I recommend giving it a second go. Story-wise, it definitely matches the first two by the end. Very worth it.
As for a God of War movie... I loved the game, but the story was 'meh' at best. Am I the only one who is pretty sure this will end up sucking?

Admittedly off topic, Snake Eater was a letdown of a game. As far as a movie based on Snake Eater? YOU try explaining MGS2 to Roger Ebert...

I'll do it. Hit me up with some contact info. :p Wait! What does the plot of MGS2 have to do with Snake Eater? :|
Anyways, as far as my opinion goes, SE isn't my fave gameplay-wise, but I still loved the story.
God of War could be a decent movie but only if it got the R rating. Blood took up 90% of the screen in that game.
On the subject of games that should be made into movies my vote goes to Zelda. It would have been a risky choice a few years ago but with the success of Lord of the Rings, it's a no-brainer.

I think I'd prefer not. Maybe if the supposed Nintendo animation division were to make it.

The original poster should edit their post to reference David Jaffe's blogpost on the topic:
http://davidjaffe.modblog.com/?show=blogview&blog_id=693618
Am I involved? I am. I am not writing the script or anything but I am invovled in making sure the movie is true enough to the game that fans of the game will be happy....I think all of us involved want this to be a great movie that stands on its own that HAPPENS to come from a video game. And so yes, things will change in order to make the movie work as a film....but I am there to make sure GOD OF WAR is still GOD OF WAR.

That's pretty good news. I sort of like Jaffe. I mean he can be annoying in his excitement, but at least I can tell he really loves making games and playing the games as well.
Yeah I agree, I love the God of War Game...

Billy Zane, no question. Man was born to play Kratos. Slap some white makeup on him to make him look all ghostly.. bam, Kratos

Wow, Billy Zane does have the Kratos look.
I think this could be an excellent movie, if done right obviously. I thought they did a great job with the story of how Kratos became to be what he is and such, I had visions of a movie in my head as I played.
Snake Eater had an awesome story. Gameplay wise it was a little weak. The switching to first person view constantly sucked. The final battle was awesome, too. And any time a WIG craft features into anything, it's just plain awesome. Those things look evil as hell.

If they can make a movie out of Mortal Kombat then they can make a movie out of anything.

I'll only watch this movie if Uwe Boll directs it.
I think Uwe Boll and Paul W.S. Anderson should team-up to make a movie. I'd wait in line for tickets.

what will happen is that they will make kratos into this super hero like maximus in gladiator and ruin everything that made kratos into an interesting character to begin with.
i hope not but aargh
