PS2.IGN (http://ps2.ign.com/) has posted a hands-on preview (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/637/637014p1.html) of Sniper Elite including new screenshots for your viewing pleasure.

Here's a bit of the preview:
Our experience with the single player campaign is a measured test of patience that results in satisfying payoffs. The stealth elements include camouflage and sound masking which uses environmental noise to hide your attacks. At the end of the day the game feels more like Splinter Cell with the lights on than a typical WWII shooter, and this is a very good thing.

With a single player campaign that spans 28 missions, a co-op mode, and online multiplayer features expect to hear more details on this game sometime soon.

There is some confusion between Gamestop, Gametab and Ebgames as to what platforms and and when the game is to be released. So taking the word of Namco's Sniper Elite website (http://www.namco.com/games/sniperelite/), it appears October 2005 will be the release schedule for the game in the U.S. and it's being developed for the PC, PS2 and Xbox.

I have been waiting for an accurate sniping game for ages, but unfortunately this does not look like it will be that game. From what I have read, the sniping itself sounds quite authentic at the highest difficulty, but the movies and screenshots have shown far too much close combat with submachine guns and the like. As boring as it may sound on paper, I want a proper simulation - sitting on top of a building waiting for the perfect shot in a hostage situation or waiting for the perfect shot to blow away an important commander and so on - think of the original SWAT game for an example of what I am looking for. This game looks far too action oriented for my liking and it seems as though many of the "features" such as hiding bodies and setting traps and so on will ultimately be unnecessary in the game, but I hope that I am proven wrong.

Is is me or is Namco struggling with doing graphics that doesn't look like it's from a Naomi arcade board?

I'm not that impressed with the look of the game at all.
