Sony Europe has officially spilled the beans on what we're going to be getting from the 2.0 firmware for the PS3, which will be made avaiable tomorrow.
From ThreeSpeech (http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=699):
Building on the success and potential of the Remote Play functionality, Version 2.00 will cement the partnership between PS3 and PSP and create a truly global experience. With the ability to turn your PS3 on and off from Wi-fi connection, there is now the opportunity to listen to the music, look at the photos and watch the videos saved on the PS3 Hard Disk Drive, anywhere in the world.
To further enhance the PS3 offering, Version 2.00 allows for the creation of personalised playlists in both the music and photo sections. This simple to use function gives users an opportunity to create unlimited music playlists for all occasions, as well as sharing favourite photos in glorious high definition.
Continuing with the idea of a personalised PS3, Version 2.00 allows for customisation of the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) menu screen. Change the colour and brightness with the greatest of ease or have something completely different by setting a custom theme. With the potential for new backgrounds to become available on PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork in the future, Version 2.00 truly opens up a whole raft of options.
A host of other enhancements includes the addition of an Information Board on XMB to keep people up to date on the latest PlayStationŽ news, the inclusion of a new PLAYSTATION Network category and logo for easier navigation and Trend Micro Web Security, a free2, state of the art internet security system, designed to give parents peace of mind.
PS3 Fanboy (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/photos/ps3-firmware-2-00/477300/) has some pics of the themed XMB.
Still no in game XMB. Some nice features, but mostly underwhelming. Folder organization for games in the XMB or a new store would have been nice.
The Bundling of 'Trend Micro Web Security' makes me cry, its bloat, and its not free, and doesn't really add anything worthwhile to the PS3. I feel like bundling of un-needed software is usually a sign of failure.

If I had a PSP and a PS3 (I have neither), the Remote Play would be seriously awesome.

The remote play thing is awesome, but overall underwhelming. It would be a bigger deal for me if they released the demos during the day on Thursday, but usually by the time I get home from work they still aren't live.
I got just that and I'm so going to try to remote start it from my work when this patch comes out.

You can do it via your router, or just over the internet. It's the PSP that connects to it via WiFi. As far as the 40GB, that has the WiFi built in, only the 20GB so far hasn't had that.

Nope. All it needs is an active internet connection. All PSP's are wireless so just go wired on the PS3 and your gold.
EDIT: I believe.

Those are some pretty freaking lame updates. I thought 2.0 was going to be a very big release. While cool... remote play is basically useless to me (and yes, I own both). Themes and security software, I couldn't give two shits about.
Lame.

Music playlists are great. I use them all the time on my 360. I've got 3-4 different lists based on mood. Then I can pull them up in games, especially racing games. Glad to see the feature coming to the PS3.
Out of curiosity, can you play these custom playlists in games on the PS3? I've never been successful playing my own MP3s and a game at the same time. I could have been on an earlier firmware that didn't allow it, but I tried and it didn't work so I haven't tried again.

Heh, that made me chuckle. I agree though, the playlists are a good thing. Now I don't have to constantly select Mighty Boosh episodes.

That's a big part of it. What people haven't realized yet, though, is that if they can't fit new feature "foo" into the existing memory reservation, it's unlikely to happen this generation. Upping the memory reservation is a huge change that impact the development of titles and likely causes earlier titles to have issues... and remember, many of those earlier titles weren't online enabled and can't be patched over the net. :(

Ok since I don't have a PS3 and have used one for a weekend I am going to ask. I assume by in game XMB you guys are talking something similar to the Xbox in game dash. If my assumption is correct, what is it you want this XMB to do?

In game messaging is about it, though access to the web browser for checking GameFaqs (or something similar) would be damn nice. That's about it for me. I know some want custom soundtracks, but I'd only ever use that for racing games, and I don't play those nearly as much as I used to.

I'm not sure why it'd be considered an afterthought, though not being able to access it when you're in a game really limits it's function. It's not nearly as full featured as LIVE though.

It just didn't seem very clean. I was used to the 360 where everything seemed to work like it should. Like if your friend is playing a game of Warhawk, can you select a friend and join his game?

Sorta, but Warhawk is that exception. You'd have to launch Warhawk and then you see him on your friend list in the game (it mirrors you PS3 list), then you join from there. With most others, no, you can't. It's simply a messaging system that allows you to see what others are playing.

?
So if I am playing a game... lets say Oblivion, and my friend comes home from work and fires up Warhawk, will I be notified? Will I be able to join his game? Or will I have to quit my current game, load Warhawk, and then check my friends list?
Also, you say Warhawk is the exception. How does it differ from other online games?
And why wasn't this clarified/improved with the 2.0 release?

Pretty much, yeah. And I completely agree, it should have been fixed, but that would have required access to your friend list while in a game, something that's still not there.
Warhawk is the exception as far as I'm aware, but it's also the only multiplayer game I've cared to play on the PS3. It allows you, from the friend list ingame, to join a game any of your friends are playing (assuming there's room, of course).

No clock? That sucks :) I still wish I could avoid downloading these updates. For some reason they take forever to download/install on my PS3.
IMHO it's pretty poor that Sony still hasn't manged to include in-game XMB a year after release.
Does this release make it possible to organize movies in folders? That's something I would want. It was rumored if I remember correctly.

Hey, Sony, how about an update that stops the HDMI connection from choking momentarily every half-hour or so? I can put up with it on a DVD because I can easily enough rewind if I miss something important, though it's still annoying, but it's really inconvenient in games, which, more than any difference in performance, is what makes me buy cross-platform releases on the 360. The PS3 is the only HDMI device I have which does this, I'm not the only one with this problem, and it's bullshit.
I really want to love the PS3, but for all the build flaws in the 360, it's the PS3 that has been causing me technical problems.

There is something flaky with the wireless in my ps3 and I've heard reports of it elsewhere. Download from the store via wireless? Takes a long time. Download over a physical connection? Nice and quick.
The interface just isn't getting the throughput it should, seems like. Doesn't matter for games but can be a pain for store downloads and I've also heard people complain about video streaming as well although I've not had that problem myself.
As far as new features go, I'm not going to complain about this update. We're getting new features, we should be happy. We didn't pay for new features, we didn't pay for these periodic updates, we're not paying to play multiplayer. Don't let the stealth trolling and FUD in this thread cloud the issue.

Well, my PS3 is wired, and everything I download to it takes a long time when compared to my PC or 360 downloading the same amount of data. :(
I always assumed it was the servers on which the Playstation store resides.

Mine is wireless, and it's a toss up on what downloads fast/slow. Most things go at a decent speed. Nothing goes too slow, to be annoying. However, certain downloads will use almost my entire bandwidth, while others wont. I chalk it up to the servers hosting my downloads. I don't think it has much to do with my connection.
Meanwhile, a friend of mine, who lives no more than 3 minutes away by car, gets crappy download speeds pretty much all of the time. He too uses wireless.

I have had the complete opposite experience. Xbox Live downloads ( on release days) took longer for me than PS3 downloads. A friend of mine (who is a rabbid 360 fan) complained yesterday because of the slow download for the Pro Street demo on Live and I was finished much faster getting the PS3 version. Then again, I had to "install" my version after the download.
As for the update. They added some major functions and people are crying? I think this is a big update. They added the remote play on/off function, playlist, the ability to use themes and manipulate the XMB. Those are pretty big improvements. Not to mention, the Uncharted demo hits tomorrow. I guess I am easily pleased.
Edit* replaced take with took because I traded my 360 away about a month ago.

As a 360 owner and a perspective PS3 owner I would have to disagree with you on this one. Sure you don't pay for system updates or being able to play online, but it was something Sony said they were doing from the start. It seems they bit off more than they can chew with the PS3 and are now feeling the repercussions of that. They don't need to provide us with anything, but I think the market has spoken on what it wants from the PS3. There seems to be a lot of disappointed owners in this thread and right now that is the market they are pandering to. The Wii owns the mainstream and provide for it, while the 360 and PS3 are fighting for the hardcore.
It seems at this point Sony isn't providing for the market and their sales show that. They can continue to keep their heads in the sand or they can give the people what they want. They've been on damage control for quite sometime for some of their remarks, and telling your customer base that they know what they want isn't going to garner them any outstanding sales. I want the PS3 to succeed, I want to have as much competition as possible. The more PS3s there are out there the more MS sweats and the better off we as consumers are.
Telling your customer base what they want (as Sony has in the past) and not following market trends is just bad business. I would happily pay $50 a year if either Nintendo or Sony would streamline their efforts as much as MS has. That is a huge selling point for me. It is one of the biggest reasons I have yet to get a Wii and Sony seems to be heading in that direction, so I am interested in a PS3 now. I just hope Sony picks up the pace and listens to what their community is asking for.

That isn't how it works. Proximity to the servers equals better latency, not better throughput.
The reason his downloads are better would seem to be that the Japanese store has more hardware/bandwidth available. You can easily verify this by putting a Japanese account on an American PS3 and trying similar downloads from either store. I get much better speeds from the Japanese store than I do from the American one.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.
The market hasn't spoken about anything with regards to the PS3 other than the pricing and the availability of games.
They didn't promise ingame XMB.
They didn't promise custom soundtracks---which btw is a feature that is available but developers actually have to make use of it.
If the PS3 doesn't have the features you want today then you quite honestly shouldn't be buying it today.
XMB is never going to be Live! People need to realize that and get over it. Alternately, Live! is never going to give developers, much less gamers, the freedom to add content to their games as they see fit as they can on PS3.

While I agree with this, I really don't see too much FUD. I think it's a matter of being disappointed that a really wanted feature did not make the update.
The FUD I was referring to was the post by somebody affiliated with Microsoft, somebody who I can assure you isn't disappointed that PSN is coming up short in a feature by feature comparison with Live!
He is trying to plant the fear in your mind that in-game XMB will never be possible, or if possible will require some drastic sacrifice on the part of developers and/or gamers.
Pretty much a textbook example of FUD.

"'It's very real,' one source tells us. 'They (Sony) are dead serious about it. They've declared, and I quote, a 'full-on assault' on the latest version of Xbox Live.'"

Why does a title need to be "online enabled" in order to be patched? I noticed that plenty of titles are getting patched for DualShock3 functionality, but are not "online enabled."
I know others have disdained the feature, but I'm really looking forward to the new Remote Play functionality. I've got plenty of media on my PS3 that I'd love to access with my PSP when away from home. I do have a question, though: can I use Remote Play to access my Tversity media server through the PS3?

VNC? You've got me there, or I'm having a brain fart, because the term isn't registering. Remote play lets you access content on your PS3 and PC (if it's set up to communicate with the PS3 of course) from your PSP via a WiFi hotspot literally anywhere. So far you can only play Lair over it, so game wise it's pretty much worthless at this point, but for music and video, it works great. Hopefully, though, that support is expanded in the future.

And the people who haven't used it won't learn about it cause they get answers like this. Then, they don't want to learn about it...

Old. Every few months this keeps on coming back. I still don't know why there isn't XMB access. divX support would also be really nice too.

Thanks.
So it's basically a media extender. Woo. However, the gaming aspect intrigues me. It's the full game of Lair?
VNC basically lets you see a remote computer desktop and lets you run it. I was hoping that the PSP did the same thing. Hence, theoretically, you can play full PS3 games on it.

Yep, that's basically what it is. You get the full XMB (Photo, Music, Video, Games, Network, and Friend List) and access to everything in those. The only problem is, no games besides Lair actually work right now (as far as I know that's the full game, but I'm not enough of a masochist to actually play Lair). You can send and receive messages and do pretty much everything else besides access system settings.

Tretton doesn't shy away from direct comparisons to Sony's biggest game-industry rival. "We offer everything that Xbox Live does. The big differentiating factor is that we're not charging you" to sign up for the network service, he said. (http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/news/2006/10/71982)
Well, maybe he means something else when he used the word "everything".

I thought it was a troll post, but since you wanna know, here goes:
Everytime I've connected to my PS3 through Remote Play, I've had no lag or slowdown when playing music and looking at pictures (at a normal pace. the system will lag if I try to scroll through pics too quickly). The HD trailers I've downloaded from the store do get laggy. The single SD video I have on my PS3 seems to play just fine, but it is just a 15 meg file. I've played a couple of the puzzle game demos from my PS3 with no problems due to the controller scheme. However, I have not tried to play Lair, since I do not own the game. Tonight, I am going to experiment with my Tversity media server.
Since I am connecting through the internet, I have experienced typical internet issues like connection drops and such. So like all online experiences, if you have a good, stable connection, Remote Play works just fine. This is all my own opinion and experience, so YMMV.

When I was using the PS3 I had I should have tried this out. It linked to my Orb server just fine and played everything off there. I have sort of an odd setup too. I have Orb running on my Windows Media Center PC (XP edition) in my living room, that is my front end; the Orb server streams movies, tv shows, music and pictures off of two 1TB Linux Nas servers I have in the basement (fucking awesome software (http://serverelements.com/)). It is a fantastic setup and gives me access to basically all my media anywhere I can get to a browser. I wanted to get a PS3 so I could serve up some hot slices from it to my PSP. That way I could take my PSP into my warehouse and stream my tunes from home instead of bringing in my ipod to get destroyed.

This actually sounds like an HDTV problem, not your HDMI or PS3. I've yet to have any problems like that with my PS3, and I've had it since I waited 2 days outside Best Buy last year at launch. But then again I've got the 'Classic' 60-gig that was built (apologies to Chevy for the thievery) like an effin' BD-R playin' rock.
While I like the Remote Play option and the ability to make playlists, this is an underwhelming update, IMO. I really hope Sony isn't delaying in-game XMB to include it with Home.
I seriously lost count on how many people used the word 'underwhelming' in reference to this update. But we should at least 'pretend' to realize that this isn't even an official announcement, from what I read in the OP it was a leaked UK press release that has no bearing whatsoever on the majority of Sony's selling territories. The UK market in so many ways does not = the rest of the games market. I'm waiting to hear about some more features in 2.00, personally.
In the meantime, Sony, gimme more reasons to pick up a PSP. Those Star Wars-edition PSP ads on late night TV are beginning to get my Spidey sense tingling.

I think I can safely disagree with this entire quote. PS2 > Wii's mainstream appeal, most definitely now with the $99 Slim coming out. There's no way that the Wii ATM can compete after having some major titles slip back into a 2008 release date.
Hell, even the PSP sales are gaining speed on what once was the Juggernaut-like DS. Why? Because Sony DOES realize what the audience wants, contrary to the views the majority of people will try to brainwash you into thinking here at EvAv. It's not a mistake that the PS3 is the best-selling HD-media player to date right now. This is how the system's been marketed while the software side of the games equation catches up. This is how a FAMILY (not a single gamer with a low income-- the majority of Xbox owners by all studies done-- and no, I'm not linking you to one) will most likely be introduced to high definition content. Or better yet--- Spider-Man 3 will most likely be how a 6-figure-income suburban family will get their high-def cherry popped (Sony's REAL marketing targets, SO not Xbot-leaning EvAv posters my misguided friend).
My opinion, I guess.

How does it fair on memory consumption? The inordinate amount of memory reserved by the system is a total stranglehold on the PS3 to date.

What games are coming out for the PS2 that will help sustain its momentum until the PS3 becomes the dominant platform?
When, by your educated estimates, can we expect to see the PS3 be the dominant console? If memory serves, Sony stated that it would be by March 2008. By your predictions, will it be before or after March?
When you say that Wii can't compete, what exactly do you mean? I was under the impression that Wii was outselling most of the competition with the exception of the Halo effect...

I'll tackle the last question first, since I gather that was the only non-rhetorical one of the bunch. Well, you half-quoted me. That, or you half-misunderstood me. I did say that the Wii couldn't compete with the PS2-- but in terms of the mainstream appeal only.
Why? A bigger (and better, at the moment) software library is on the PS2. The PS2 is over $100 cheaper than the Wii, which is already by many people's opinion dirt cheap for a console. That's a wickedly low cost of entry, along with a wickedly low risk of being disappointed by your investment. I mean, if you can't find a title you like outta the near 10,000 PS2 titles released worldwide to date (http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdatatitle_e.html) methinks your name might be 'Jack Thompson'.... oh and I guess 'Bill Gates' would work here, too.
Looks like a familiar argument, eh? It's exactly the same thing 360 owners say to me about why their system is superior to the PS3! Careful now, anything ya might say against me can and might make you a hypocrite...
And geez-- you'd think having a remote control as the main device for the Wii, that the thing'd at least play DVDs for Chrissakes. So yeah, as long as DVDs are outselling HD media, I think the $99 PS2 will match the Wii's pace quite evenly, moreso when you consider the poor 40-gigers who'll be forced to snag one due to a lack of 60-gig BC-ness. Hell, they'd still be paying a net $100 less than I paid at launch for my PS3 for that combo, I might not even be talking outta my ass on that one.
The PS2's momentum, going back to your first question, is kinda simple to explain. Own a PS3? You can (theoretically) play PS2 titles! Own a PS2 and not an HDTV, and can't afford a 360 or PS3.... or maybe even not a Wii (or are you tired of playing Wii Sports)? You can play PS2 titles, too! And guess what? There's about 100 million units out there in the wild, or in someone's home used as we speak. Soooo.... it's not likely that the support from third parties will be going away ANYTIME soon. Like-- 2009 is the year I'm expecting things to begin to taper off, but if anything blame the Wii's popularity for this, not the PS3's shortcomings.
Scenario: The PS2 is just send ports over to Wii by the buckets, so it's only natural for greedy developers to start pumping out the mini-multiplat titles for Wii/PS2 by the truckloads-- especially if something as simple as that will double their profits. Scratch that, I think PS2 is far more lucrative at this point than the untested, low-attach rate Wii owners who are NOT gamers, for the most part. These people won't be reacting to sales strategies the way, say, an Xbox 360 owner would react to, say, a Halo 3 ad campaign.
The PS3 won't become the dominant system until I say it will, and NOT before. Since I don't care when anybody else arbitrarily "declares" that the PS3 is now a dominant system, and would I please start buying their software now since it's socially-acceptable? That's so not the way gaming works by any means, and I'd be a little insulted that you asked me a question like that if I wasn't 100% sure that you were only testing me. I SO just passed, right?!
Or maybe you meant something else by 'dominant' system. The internets kinda muddle implications somethin fierce. Anywho, I'm off to download the 2.00 update.
If anyones interested the firmware update is available to download now...

Well said.
Wouldn't call this an argument, though, more of a Q and A between gamers who see things from opposite sides of the tracks. I juuuust tend to go a tad long-winded in favor of the SONY at times. Y'know, like how feminists love saying "HER and his," or using feminine pronouns when they talk about a random person/animal/thing if HER gender isn't known.
It's shocking to hear and read that kinda stuff! Right? When you expect to hear or read something that you've come to... expect (it's late)? So consider the diverging perception of the SONY held by people who are clearly male chauvinist swine pigheaded sex fiends that don't think twice about objectifying women (or the oppressed members of the SDF) continually, unprofessionally, and unscrupulously. My name is TeeCakes, and I wish you a good night, sir.

Yeah, that doesn't change it's look, neither does the little news feed thing or the store icon. I think that's about it.
The new remote play thing is pretty cool, and it works like a charm. You have to activate it on the PS3 to be able to turn it on remotely, and you have this little green light near the HDD indicater that stays on when you have it active. At least, I think that's what that is, because I don't remember ever seeing that on when the console is off before.
