Rogue Synapse, a development group that focuses on creating games that appear in movies, have released their version of the game from The Last Starfighter.

The game can be downloaded here (http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/last_starfighter.php).

Wow, holy nostalgia.

As with many movies from my childhood The Last Starfighter does not hold up well. I'd rather hold on to the fond memories of my ignorant youth than try to relive them and be disappointed at how horribly cheesy those movies actually are.

The movie was on TV recently and I watched some of it. The movie holds up better than the game in it.

Wasn't there an actual Last Starfighter game?
ISTR one from way back that was basically a knock-off of Star Raiders 2.
still pretty fun though.

Granted, it was nothing like what Lance Guest was playing in the movie.
More sim/strategy than arcade shooter.

Wasn't there an actual Last Starfighter game? There was a NES version of Last Starfighter, but it was simply a rename Uridium (2d shooter ported from the c64). Star Raiders 2 was supposed to be Last Starfighter, but they removed the movie references and didn't go with the license.

But wow! They also have Space Paranoids from Tron!!!!This IS cool!

The Goonies holds up well :P.

Heck yes it does. Watch it several times and try to only listen to one character each time. There's so much talking going on and each one of them is funny.

There was a NES version of Last StarfighterNah, i'm definitely thinking of an Atari game.

Star Raiders 2 was supposed to be Last Starfighter, but they removed the movie references and didn't go with the license.... I'm pretty sure I played both.... hm.

now you're gonna make me go google.
EDIT: here we go (http://www.atarimania.com/detail_soft.php?MENU=8&VERSION_ID=2927)
That's what I was thinking of.

Dunno that I agree with this. I mean, of course the game's graphics and gameplay look dated by today's standards, but that doesn't mean it can't still be a great game. Besides, same as with countless other classics which are still played by millions of gamers today--the greater part of the enjoyment you derive from playing a game like Track & Field or R-Type isn't so much from the gameplay itself, but rather the nostalgic transport you experience while playing them.

I still remember laying on the floor in the den of our family home as a little boy, watching this awesome movie that my parents had rented to play in our VCR (that had a WIRED remote for pausing and fast-forwarding, no less). Thinking about it, I can still remember how that old brown and oatmeal carpet felt against my elbows as I lay there mesmerized. I even remember having to close my eyes during that one scene where the bad guys are torturing the spy they captured, while Mom scrambled to get to the remote so she could press and hold the fast-forward button. :)

Great times.

Incidentally, I remember reading on, I think it was klov.com, that the people behind the movie had originally intended on releasing an arcade game based on the one in the movie, and that quite a bit of development was done on it, but that the technology just wasn't there (and what was there was too expensive) to get it up to a level they thought would be worthwhile for release.
