From the best news ever department comes word that a Voltron Movie (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=598&e=4&u=/nm/20050726/film_nm/voltron_dc) is in the works. Two employees at New Line Cinema, Mark Costa and Ford Oelman, secured the rights from "Voltron" owner World Events, and eventually brought the project to Gordon, whose credits also include "Saving Private Ryan" and "Speed." Costa and Oelman will executive produce, along with Pharrell Williams, one-half of the producing duo the Neptunes, who will score the film and produce the soundtrack.
Voltron was one of my favorite cartoons ever as a kid...still is. :)
I actually saw this a while back. I think it'll be interesting to see how this and Transformers are done on the big screen.
Personally, I'm more interested in the new He-Man movie in the works.

I never really took a shine to Voltron. Always seemed like a "Battle of the Planets by way of Big Robots" ripoff to me.
Though my kid digs Voltron, so that's cool.

Voltron is a sore spot for me.
In the 3rd grade, this bitch teacher took my fully connected Voltron toy and told me I'd get it back at the end of the year...
Well at the end of the year that whore couldn't find it.

Aww yeah, Thundercats. I remember it came on right before G.I. Joe when I was a kid. Wasn't there 2 versions of the Voltron cartoon? One with the different animals that formed Voltron and another with a bunch of vehicles that formed Voltron?

It's going to be a kids movie. Or it will suck. Or it will be both at the same time.
If your expecting Batman Begins with Giant Robot Lions, well... keep dreaming.

That completely bites. Voltron toys were high-quality metal too, not the cheap stuff.

Yes with hard, sharp edges designed to put-out eyes... Golly that was the good ol' days. My neighbor had one and we played with it for hours.
As a kid I remember watching this show and loving it. But recently I went back and looked at an episode and was amazed with how bad it was heh. I mean it was amazingly bad. Wonder how they would turn it into a movie, cartoon or live actions?
Voltron, meh...
Transformers could be cool, if done right.
Thundercats, again, if done right (ie not CHEESY like TMNT)!
Would rather have the Final Fantasty team do a movie for Battle of the Planets.

Okay so it's HE-MAN for you then.

Voltron was crap, so much of the show was bad recycled animation, and the English voice acting was awful. Its one of those shows you remember differently because you were too young to notice the first time around.
Maybe the original Japanese show had better voice acting, but I'm not convinced.
Now, a live action Macross (Robotech) movie would be awesome.

Voltron kicked ass man! Ahh....that was so my childhood!

I thought the first TMNT was well done. They became cheesier and more directed towards kids as they went along.
Anyway, all this talk to 80's cartoons is making me drool. This is my childhood. Thundercats was my favorite, but I loved Voltron, Transformers, and others. Hold it, no, He-Man was my favorite. Almost forgot.

Thundercats sucked and sucked hard. 15 FPS with shitty art and shittier voice work.

By the power of Greyskull, I will smi....oh man, sorry.
The only thing better than Thundercats is a modest dose of Silver Hawks. :D

The way some fanboys cling to their childhoods at any cost is fascinating.
And by fascinating I mean depressing.

It didn't. Voltron's Japanese form, Go Lion, is completely forgettable in every respect - poor animation, poor writing, ideas mostly stolen from other popular shows from 5-10 years before. As cheesy as the American version was, it's also one hell of a lot more entertaining.
Yes to a live-action Macross, or even a Robotech. Too bad Harmony Gold isn't likely to ever be able to push the license in that direction; they keep trying to make a new Robotech series with original animation....

Have you people seen any of the shows you grew up with recently? They're *ALL* terrible. From Voltron (Form blazing sword) to Thundercats (Hoooooo!) and from He-Man (I have the poooooower!) to Silverhawks (...That show lacked a catchphrase) they are all completely unwatchable without childhood blinders.
You know which show stands the test of time the best? My Little Pony. I'm not joking, go find it and see. Sure it was wierd that they traded in a castle for a small ranch with a nice yard, but otherwise it was actually a really good show.

No I haven't seen them recently. But Transformers and Thundercats were pretty good, at least to me at the time. If a DVD were available, I'd pick it up.
Voltron I don't remember. I think it was after my time. GI Joe was ok but was obviously designed to sell toys. Silver Hawks, ugh. And I never watched enough He-Man to really say how I liked it, but the couple of times I caught it, I thought it was bad.
Anyone remember the Dungeons and Dragons TV cartoon they had back in, uh, early eighties (I think)? This one. (http://povonline.com/cols/COL145.htm) That show was pretty good too.
EDIT: Oh, and Smurfs. The Smurfs were awsome. "Help, Papa Smurf, HELP!!" Ha ha, that always cracked me up. :p
I love that Masters of the Universe movie. Dolph is the man.

It is a shame that thundercats had poor voice in the US version, because the voice acting in the spanish version was top notch... i still remember each one of their voices ... that show was AWESOME!!!!

GOD I hope that Voltron won't look ANYTHING like the transformers movie ( from what i've seen so far) since the snippet makes it look like what I already run into on cartoon network, just really long. Of course, it COULD always go the way of the new Ninja Turtles movie that never made it. Guess we'll just have to see.
