Well, what a wonderful few days it has been. Since EA didn't take the time to respond (or maybe even read) our emails about various stats-server security holes, it clearly showed us how much they care. Therefore, we came to the conclusion that modifying 5 million accounts wouldn't be that big of a deal.
That being said, accounts with ids from 40,000,000 to 45,000,000 now have all of their weapons unlocked.
Well my account has been hacked as I have access to all the weapon unlocks. I think it is safe to say that EA got owned.
Editor: Looks like a few enthusiasts have started to actively persuade EA to patch the security loopholes.

Er, I don't play Battlefield 2, sure, but... wasn't it EA who ruined it?
Anyways, I think this is a really funny story. I especially like the tone the guy who wrote the announcement had. Not a stupid, l33t-sounding hacker. Sounds like he could be a real intelligent guy.
Good work to them. Hope EA hears the message.

my brother was screaming his head off last night
'I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO PLAY FOR NOW, ARGGHHHHHHHH'
guess this explains it :p

I didn't even know you COULD unlock weapons, what with the manual having evaporated the moment air touched it.

It's been great fun, no complaints from me. I just dislike all this 'cyber terrorism' (extreme term, but their ideology isn't too disimilar to that of others who force their will upon others).

HAHA I don't even own the game and this made me laugh :) Thanks EA and indeed EA for bringing a smile to my face.

CapnAJ that is such a pile of crap. More people need to hack major corporations because our governments sure as hell aren't taking them to task.

Its not really terrorism unless you do something bad, IMO. They unlocked some people's weapons. It would be like trying to force a bank to recognize their security holes by getting into the accounts and giving everyone $5.

Personally, I think any jab at EA is good, but I think this is a terrible argument. Depending on the bank, giving everyone $5 could amount to stealing millions. That money doesn't come from nowhere.

Wow, so that explains why I had all the unlocks last night and my friends didn't. I thought we were just playing on unlocked servers at first.
"You guys don't have them? That's weird."

Saw this on Bluesnews, here's EA's responce:
In the future, if you really are concerned about "exposing security holes" to EA (which I sincerely doubt) rather than grandstanding, please e-mail me personally since it appears that you don't have the correct contact info. I will PM you the address.
All of the changes made will be rolled back in the next couple hours. Users may have to rechoose any unlocks they would have legitimately made in the last day or so as a result of the roll-back, but no stats should be lost.

Considering the context of the example, just assume the money came from nowhere. :p

This is ridiculous. But it does seem to be the major influence driving so-called "do-gooder" hackers. "They won't fix it, so we're gonna break it." It just doesn't make any sense and its the poorest rationale there is. These guys should be tracked down and prosecuted.

Actually, the poorest rationale is "they won't fix it, so we'll exploit it".
At least in this case they caused no real damage, and it was nothing that wasn't easily fixable by EA.

I'm oblivious to the BF2 world. What does weapon unlocking mean? Are there actually weapons you're not allowed to use?

As you play the game you advance in rank and get medals for doing well etc. This only happens if you play on ranked servers (which EA charges 8$ a month to allow a server be 'ranked'). As you advance in rank you get the option to unlock weapons. Each class has a weapon and a locked weapon for it. Each time you unlock a weapon you get a chance to decide which class should get its weapon unlocked.
So if you get a high enough rank to unlock a weapon you then can decide if you want to unlock your assault class weapon or your medics etc etc. There are I think 8 classes? I've been playing about an hour or 2 a day and have only unlocked one weapon. I'm of average to above average skill I think.
So unlocking all the weapons is a few months work for most of us.

its definately a nice thing to work for; unlocking weapons and medals and badges and ribbons.
basically as you go up in rank (you start at private), you get to unlock a weapon. private, pfc, lance corporal, corporal, sgt, etc. at pfc you dont get to unlock anything. lance and corporal you do.
it was nice having the weapons unlocked becuase i got to experience them all and i decided which one to unlock next.
oh, and if you want your id number or just stats on yourself in general:
http://bf2s.com <-the better of the two imo
http://bf2tracker.com
http://www.ubar.sc <- all the information you need to know to get ribbons, medals and badges.

(which EA charges 8$ a month to allow a server be 'ranked')
Actually, EA doesn't charge anything, you simply have to apply for and become part of their trusted provider program. The increased price per slot on a ranked server is because of the increased hardware demands. Ranked servers use 50% more CPU than a similarly configured unranked server, and they use addtional bandwidth to communicate with EA.
Honestly ppl, try not to make bullshit up just to hate on EA, there's plenty of real reasons to hate on EA already.

So what Blade said is basically... true.
Anyway, this should bring EA up to speed and let people have some fun.

servers up when I tried. Had a little problem refreshing (only had a few hundred show up) but kept doing it and it worked. Interesting to note is that while my account was not hacked I did have to rechoose my unlocked weapon. Which was actually kinda nice as I wasn't happy with my first choice.
And yes like I said they charge money for ranked servers.
