I'am not surpised that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory stayed at #1. All the big Summer movies have already come out.

Dukes of Hazard might hit #1, but I dont forsee another blockbuster until Tim Burton's Corspe Bride.

The Island was pretty good - some good action sequences. The way the future (possibly 2019 - they only specify for certain that it is after 2015) was actually really smart. There were a few new and interesting tech present (flying motorcycle type thing, hover train, elevated mass transit on wires) but it was all mixed in with recognizable tech from the current time period. It made sense -some new, expensive stuff in the hands of the rich - but people hadn't miraculously changed everything. The blatant product placement (xbox, msn) was pretty amusing.

While not the most cerebral of films - although it does bring up the questions regarding cloning, identity, and what the laws should be - I found it to be entertaining. A Sci Fi version of Bad Boys 2 in many ways.

Perhaps I would have seen The Island if I hadn't already watched most of it in that damn trailer. WTF, trailers have gotten so bad. Spoilers galore.

that is exactly why i stayed the hell away from it.

oddly enough, "devil's rejects" was kind of a horror version of "thelma and louise", and i loved it.

I thought The Island was excellent, a very enjoyable action flick. Unfortunate that it's doing so badly. Two of my three favourite movies this year have tanked (Kingdom of Heaven being the other one, Batman Begins being the successful one). Guess it just means they'll show up on DVD sooner, I hope.

I agree with you regarding that freeway scene. That reminded me of Bad Boys 2. Other than that they don't have much in common. I really enjoyed the Island, Bad Boys 2 was worthless crap.

Michael Bay is the Antichrist. I saw 'The Island', and it had a top-notch sci-fi plot points with really, fucking ASTONISHINGLY CHEESY ACTION SEQUENCES FORCED IN BETWEEN.

** spoiler warning ****

It's like they handed him a plot synopsis and he said 'Hmm. I think I'll put in a sequence where they drop from the 150th floor of a skyscraper and survive without a scratch between these two good plot points, then put in a Mack truck chase scene where the driver magically doesn't notice his load dropping off the back of the vehicle between THESE two good plot points. Just because the movie is really good science fiction but lacks that "ME quality" about it!'

** END SPOILER **

Soo on the Scarlet Johansson bandwagon. The first few second of Lost in Translation may be the best movie moments ever.

I want to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I'm definitely seeing the March of the Penguins. Viva los penguins!

The Island is actually a remake of a really terrible science fiction movie (with Peter Graves), "Parts: The Clonus Horror". I know this because it was so bad it showed up on MST3k. So The Island doesn't even have an original dumb plot, it has a re-hashed dumb plot with added explosions and stuff.

I don't think you'll need to worry about Mr. Bay making many movies in the future. After this dismal box office it appears that it is not just critics but movie-goers too that hate the man.

Frankly, I think that this is a great example of where a bad trailer (gave away the interesting twist by letting people know that they were clones) and a director's bad reputation (the guy who made pearl harbor, which everyone thought was about an hour too long) killed what I think could have been a decent box office for a movie. Imagine if they had put some no-name director instead of Bay, advertised it as a smart sci-fi movie (there aren't any this summer, so that would have set it apart), SAVED MONEY by cutting out the some of the smashing and exploding, and had these two good actors to do what they do best...act. I think it would have been a decent earning film. As it stands I doubt it will even break $100 million bucks.

I caught The Devil's Rejects last night, it was over the top horror with gallons of blood, guts, gore and gratuitous female breast shots. And I must say...

(looks to see if the wife is looking)
...I liked it! It won't win any awards but it was a messy, screwed up movie that was fun to watch if you dig horror like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I saw The Wedding Crashes and enjoyed it. I like how the movie is really 2 movies in 1. The first half is more of a dude flick and the second half is a total chick flick. Appeals to you and your date, unless you and your date are both dudes, in which case you probably slept through the experience.

I saw "The Longest Yard" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398165/) with my brother, wanted to see it while it was still playing. There were three people total in the theatre, made it very hard to get good seats. ;)

Yeah I liked the Devil's Rejects too. I don;t knwo what to say about it though, it was just good.

And the SAW 2 trailer was awesome. Last time I felt scared since the SAW trailer, and before that was back when the Friday the 13th movies were in theaters. Movies just don't do it anymore unless you're under 15.

Does anyone else think this when they watch thet trailer? And dont say no and tell me its different just because you've seen the film! like I said, I havent seen it yet!

Um, was it better than House of 1000 Corpses? If it was, I might see it on DVD. If it wasn't or was nearly the same, I'll fucking run screaming from this forum, pulling out my short hairs in fistfuls. I hated that movie, and I'm a horror nut. Well, not MODERN horror, because most shit sucks these days. People cant create a good horror movie for the life of them.

Saw 2? Oh god, the first movie was good, but disturbing as hell. Reminded me of Se7en...ALOT. I liked it and if there is going to be a sequel, I'll happily bring my barf bag to the next one. Barfing as in GOOD!! Gore and amputations in a puzzle-like story. Grrrrreat!

You're not alone there. First time I saw the trailer (one without the spoiler) I said to the girlfriend, "It's Logan's Run! They've remade Logan's Run!"

Turns out I was wrong, but from that trailer the similarities are pretty striking.

Hey you leave my pal Goldslauger out of this! (And if you dont know what Goldslauger is, dont bother responding)

But serriously, I am not a big Tim Burton fan, (I havent seen Edward Sessiorhands yet and no plans to in the near future) but it is true that I loved The Nightmare before Chrismas. (If you watch the trailer for Corspe Bride you can hear music from Nightmare before Chrismas)

The thing is, after The Dukes of Hazard (which may or maynot be a hit, I dont know) Corspe Bride is the only big name movie coming out. Its not that I think the movie will be a big hit, its just that it has no competion. Sure the Harry Potter movie, Naria and King Kong will out do Corspe Bride, but they wont be out atlest until November.

...Why do people hate House of 1000 Corpses? It was exactly what I wanted it to be, a rip-off of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, done in a way that doesn't suck ass like the remake or sequels. I mean, it was pure awesome right up until the end... then it got stupid with the whole cyborg boogeyman dude...

I have to admit, I really enjoyed The Island. It was mainly mindless explosions and amazingly attractive but remarkebly silent Scarlett Johanssen (ah, the spelling, I murder it so), mixed in with a few poorly executed and unfunny sexist/homophobic jokes, but the action was very "gripping" and the scenes where everyone calmed down enough to stop killing one another were actually almost interesting. In other words, a "good" movie.

Oh, and it has my man Sean Bean (pronounced "SHAWN BAWN" because it makes me giggle so*), so of course I had to go see it.

*Some misguided fools like to use a nasal French pronounciation. What chicanery!

Bad acting, bad soundtrack, bad directing, laughable plot, Troma-like effects...err did I miss anything? Though I've been hearing mixed things about Rejects, so I may give it a shot.

I'll probably catch this on a matinee if I can... I don't mind the odd brainless actioner with 'splosions.

The thing is, the film wasn't even fun. It was a poor sci-fi film, terribly directed save for the Bad Boys 2 chase sequence, oddly implausible, and a good 45 minutes too long. The Island isn't even worth the title of Popcorn Flick. I saw it for free and I want my money back.

Michael Bay has the story-telling capacity of a See Spot Run story thread.

More proof that Michael Bay is the devil: Scarlet Johansson felt it was unrealistic that she had to wear a bra in the scene where she gets out of bed. She wanted to go topless, but Michael Bay said no.

I can understand detesting fake breasts... they feel different and look like a grapefruit in a sack... but why hate fake hair color?

Especially on Scarlett. She could shave it off, dye it green, wear cornrows... hell, she'd probably look hot in a Mohawk.
