View Full Version : Crysis 64-bit = More bollocks?

Some of you may or may not remember the folks at Crytek telling Gamespot that "Yes, 64-bit in general runs better than 32-bit. In fact I would recommend gamers run 64-bit only under very high configurations." (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6180628.html?page=0&prev_button=1) in regards to it's sysreqs earlier this month.
YouGamers did, however, and decided to put it to the test (http://www.yougamers.com/news/13720_crysis_32_vs_64_bit_-_the_real_story/), by running some performance benchmarks on two different 64-bit machines, and were rather stunned by the results.
[From the first test:] Take a look at the low resolution and settings figures though: on such a system, the tests were a cakewalk and this time the numbers were consistent and always had the 64 bit mode running slower than 32 bit.
...
[From the second test:] But look at the comparable settings to first system: DX9 Low at 800 x 600. Here we see that the 64 bit mode is still slower, albeit by a tiny fraction, than the 32 mode.... nearly. The High GPU test persistently gave the same sized gap with each run though, so there we have it: 64 bit faster than 32 bit, but only as a minimum value - the average and peak were essentially the same.
A more full breakdown of the FPS results in their tests are at the website, but by and large the numbers are not exactly a ringing endorsement of their 64-bit code.

If the DX10 case was Microsofts fault, who should we blame now? AMD or Intel?

I think this just screams incompetent programming.
Then again, they did get a big endorsement from AMD for FarCry . . .

The minimum value is the one that I care about, so surely what they are saying is correct.

I have to agree. It's almost impossible to get the 64bit version of the game to even run in DX10 mode. It seems pretty clear that they didn't put near as much effort or QA behind the 64 bit version.

Did they say it runs faster or produces better quality?
Remember people...some of the first gen 3D accelerators actually got lower frame rates than CPU's but the quality was much better in terms of interpolation, etc.

The more I read about this engine, the more I think Crytek are just lying about their tech.
Not really Direct X 10, not really better support for 64bit.
Someone tell me why this unoptimized engine is getting so much hype.

Having not seen the codebase, I dont know how they organized things etc.
but, I'd be surprised if this were the case, because compiling code in 64 bit mode is often as simple as toggling a compiler switch to tell it to use 64 bit extensions where necessary.
In fact, I would argue that whether you are running on a 64 bit machine should be transparent to the programmer at this stage (unless you want to do math that actually requires a 64 bit cpu).

We have had designers and programmers on this very site mention how great Cryengine 2 is to work with. And with the attention that Crytek paid to scaleability, easily updating the engine retroactively, and to modernize it, there is a lot of smart work and thought in this engine.
Also, I find it cute when people try to sound smart and talk about things they do not understand. This is the first engine making a push for 64 bit out of the box. It really sucks that Crytek is one of the last places trying to push the envelope.

You can argue that all you want. It still won't make the demo run in both DX10 and 64bit mode at the same time.

I don't care about the site...I'm wondering about CryTeks claim. Did they say it would improve speed or quality? If it was quality then this hardware site is wasting our time.

The engine does use DX10 which is evident by the SM4 shaders found in the cache directory.

Lemme just go through the Rolodex to find my old pal Cevat's number. I don't know what he meant by better, but I do know that all hardware reviewers care about are frames per second. I also know that these reviewers do not have access to the latest version of the engine or the game. Furthermore I know that that particular site was not using the optimal rig to test out the claims.

You have to realize this news story has been dragged out into the open by a Microsoft-hating, ignorant schizo. He can't even get XP to run without getting viruses, what makes you think he's going to do anything but call Microsoft evil?
This newspost is brought to you by someone with a serious anti-MS agenda and bias, and anything that makes Crysis (which in turn is one of the top DX10 titles, and DX10 = Microsoft) looks like shit also, in some way, makes Microsoft look evil and shitty.

So first you state that Crysis ISN'T using DX10. When I called you out on it you changed your stance to this?
Many DX10 effects can be done using SM3 shaders BUT they are slower and more complex to code.
The Geometry Shaders really can't be done with SM3 and if you look at the cache Crysis is using some amount of those.
New Shader Models isn't ALWAYS about offering new technology that was previously impossible. It often allows effects to be done far easier and faster.

I would have thought that you'd have a better understanding of the English language as a grad student. Specifically the definition of "backfire." I'm afraid I'm not following you regarding how you've achieved this backfiring. If you mean your smugness about being in a post grad program I think you're in for a rude awakening when you grow up a bit more and step out into the real world. You'll then see that you are in fact not the only person who has gone the route of a post grad education. Hell, you're trying to start a pointless immature pissing contest with one right now. :p
You really do need to grow up man. Either because you're still of the immature mentality that you can act this way because you're online, or because you act this way all the time and you'll find out that you can never hold down a job...

Just so you look like less of a presumptuous, hypocritical ass in the future I graduated with a CS degree 7 years ago and I've been in the "real world" ever since working for a Fortune 100 technology company. Perhaps one has to be in their 40's now adays to enter the "Real World". One can only wonder how far off you are from that.
