View Full Version : Major Nelson Threatens to Bring the Hammer Down on Cheaters
Dr.Finger

Looks like some unscrupulous scammers are using Halo 3's skulls, and the difficulty acquiring such, to prey on the vain and the stupid over XBL. From Major Nelson's Blog (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/10/30/Xbox-LIVE-account-sharing-and-Gamesave-tampering-dont-do-it.aspx).
I have mentioned this a couple of times on my podcasts, but I want to make sure those that don't listen to the show get the message. Specifically, don't share your account information. If you run into that person in Halo 3 who claims if they could have your LIVE ID name and password to recover your Xbox LIVE account to their Xbox and they'll rank you up or find you all the hidden skulls in Halo 3, I urge you not to fall to temptation. While it may be appealing, in addition to violating the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use it can also result in you permanently losing your account. If that 'friend' of yours decides not return your account and buys a bunch of Arcade titles and movies on your account, there is nothing we can do except cancel the account since you willingly shared your information.
Cancelled.
As in you can never get it back.
In addition to losing your Gamertag, you'll also lose your Gamerscore, saved games and any points you have on the account. He also threatens to send those that artificially inflate their Gamerscores, such as hacks and software exploits, to the cornfield as well.
How vain and/or stupid do you have to be to give someone your login for a few measly, and useless, gamerpoints?

Some people really seem to be obsessed with gamerscore (buying orange box on 360 specifically for achievements, etc.), so I don't find it that surprising.

How stupid do you have to be to not be able to find, say, a link like this here, with pretty pictures, to find the freaking skulls! (http://faqs.ign.com:80/articles/823/823401p1.html)
Agh! Phooey!
And the gamerscore is a lamerscore. Who gives a RIP what your number is? Actually achieving the stuff can be fun, but the number is pointless.

I could care less about what happens to dumb people who share their account or seek to inflate their gamerscore by hook or by crook.
But -- what does he mean by saved games?
Is he saying that if your gamertag is tied to a Live account, and that Live account is cancelled (for whatever reason), you lose access to any saved games that were saved under that gamertag?
I.e. locally saved game data, no longer accessible locally?
That would be kinda fucked up.

I think it has more to do with getting the armor pieces in this case than the actual gamerscore. And its about damn time Microsoft starts caring about gamesavers. Those fuckers are the bane of gamerscore boards everywhere.

You know, not everyone has played Half Life 2, and Ep1 yet. That's why I bought the Orange Box. I like achievements, but I wouldn't buy any game that I wouldn't normally play just for achievement points.

Yes. If you say, accidentally delete your user profile, like I did a few months ago, you lose everything. Even when you recover it, all your saved games/placeholders in games are gone. It's like you never even played them. You still keep achievements and points though, and anything you DLed on Live.

The only way your stuff is really safe is to never connect to Live and use a gamertag locally on your machine only. Of course, your gamerscore would be even more useless, but hey you can cheat to your hearts content!

Sorry, I should have clarified. I've read some accounts of people getting it on 360 as opposed to PC, only because of achievements (IE, people already have the PC to run it).

I got mine on 360*, but I already had THAT to run it. I think I'm failing to see your point? Are people buying 360s JUST to get The Orange Box(So worth it BTW) and be achievement whores?

Though to be pedantic: I do care a tiny bit about what MS does to cheaters. Because it raises the question of what can they do to the rest of us, even on accident. (See: Valve deactivating Aussie HL2 OB purchases.)
And this apparent 'lose your Live account lose your local save games' thing is something we should all care about.

Good question! According to Wikipedia,
The name image macro originates from the Something Awful Forums[citation needed], where for a time the use of a preset "macro" text would insert into the post a corresponding image. It is not to be confused with macro photography.

Good question! According to Wikipedia,
Hmm. Well, it does not seem like a very good description of what's going on. It isn't macro photography, and the captions aren't automatically added through a programmatic macro or script.
What's a better name for these kinds of funny, captioned images?

Actually, I think the Wikipedia article is poorly written there. I think what it is trying to say is that users would type a certain code in and the forum would automatically replace it with the corresponding image. For example, when you type a ':' followed by a ")" here, you get ":)". Except, with Something Awful, I guess they would be codes that corresponded to images like these 'FAIL' ones as opposed to little emoticons.
We still do that, in a way, by typing a code that tells the forum to display an image. The only difference there is that we can use nearly any image so long as it exists elsewhere on the Internet, not just a select few that the forum stores itself.
Thinking along these lines I'd say the term 'image macro' fits well enough to still use it, even if it's not as precise as it once was.
