Pretender to the Guitar Hero's throne, or legitimate challenger? While comparing set lists isn't the most scientific method, it does offer a glimpse of what's to come and serves as a neat comparison.
The set list, then, is printer below for your perusal...
Editor's Note - while this news has been posted before (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38471), I reckon the official press release is deserving of another post.

Official Press Release:
Chertsey, UK – October 29, 2007 – Harmonix, the leading developer of music-based games, and MTV Games, a division of Viacom’s MTV Networks (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), along with distribution partner Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS), announced today the final song list for its highly anticipated music videogame Rock Band™. Featuring the most master recordings of any music game ever by the world’s biggest rock artists, Rock Band includes 58 tracks and spans every genre of rock ranging from alternative and classic rock to heavy metal and punk. With multiple instruments and an impressive selection of online and offline game modes to choose from to play as a band or individually, Rock Band offers players an infinite number of ways to play each song and live out their ultimate rock and roll fantasies.
“Our goal with Rock Band was to give players the chance to experience an amazing cross section of music from the last four decades, and our final list of tracks includes everything from emerging bands to iconic artists,“ stated Paul DeGooyer, MTV’s Senior Vice President of Home Entertainment, Music and Games. “The overwhelmingly positive response from artists, music publishers and record labels made the final selection process challenging, but extremely exciting. As a result, 51 out of 58 of the final selections are based on original masters, giving fans an unprecedented way to get closer to the music they love.”
Eric Brosius, Harmonix audio lead stated, “Now that the disc track list is locked and Rock Band is being prepped for manufacture, we are working with our music partners to set an exciting download schedule, both for launch and beyond. Through DLC, players will have the ability to take a deeper dive into the music of the artists featured on the Rock Band disc, or further explore different genres of rock or additional bands if they choose.”

A lot of good stuff there.
Really pricey, though.

I'm not saying that is too few songs. The ones there are mostly good songs... but for $160 they could at least out-do GH3, in quantity.

I actually like the GH3 song list more. Though, I'll own both regardless. More songs = good in my book.
OT - I'm thoroughly enjoying GH3, the only thing that pisses me off is my girlfriend's better than I am.:o
It was quite funny she kicked this guys ass earlier today on Through the Fire and Flames, by almost 100,000 points!:p

Personally, I prefer this set list over GH3's, mostly because I like the more current songs more.

Well, that does include two more instruments than the $80-90 GHIII price. I think it's fair. From what I've read of it, the World Tour Band Mode in Rock Band is far deeper and more interesting than anything in GHIII. Plus 4-player multiplayer and more gameplay variety. You can play each song four different ways instead of just two. Pretty good value.

RB: Kick ass band simulator/party game... pretty clear who's the winner imo.

I want to play drums on this game... but $179 for playing the drums and singing a lot of the same songs that I've sung Karakoke games + songs I don't want to sing = don't really care.

Well, for those of us who just plan on playing the game with a guitar (and maybe singing into a headset! :D), the choice isn't as simple. Right now I think I've decided to get neither and wait a while so I can get a better idea of which one to get.

Listen to me: Rock Band is NOT more expensive than GH3. The game is $50/$60, just like any other game, GH2 and 3 included. You can play with your same guitar, and it's every bit the game that any previous GH is or has been. The difference is, you're getting a drum game and a singing game as well, for which you can buy or not buy instruments at your discretion. Public perception of the price is the biggest hurdle I see for Rock Band. I think the best thing they could do is add a game/guitar bundle for $90, just to let people know that you can play it guitar-only and enjoy a full game.

Not only the price, but I think we might see that the Guitar Hero name is more powerful than originally thought (at least, more than I originally thought). I actually know a lot of people (including a bunch of girls) who own a PS2 for the sole reason of playing Guitar Hero games, and when I've asked if they plan on getting GH3 or Rock Band, they don't even know what Rock Band is. I'm not saying that my anecdotal evidence is indicative of the general population or anything, but I thought it was kind of surprising all the same.

Well, the actual game has at least 10 to 12 unlockable songs that help bring the total up a bit more, but yeah, it's not the most songs in a music game ever or anything. But the fact is, you're able to do way more with each of those songs then any other music game on the market thanks to the additional instruments, so in terms of actual gameplay, you're actually getting a whole lot more to do with your money.

Yeah, that's true. I hadn't considered that you also get the drums. I'll never be singing, so that's... yeah. No singing for me.
GH3 has a Bass (or rhythm), so it's really only one more instrument in Rock Band. I wouldn't consider a microphone an instrument.
Either way, I'll be buying it, because I'm a Harmonix whore.

It's worth mentioning that Harmonix is responsible for the Guitar Hero brand being as strong as it is. Everyone pretty much discounted Guitar Hero before it exploded, and now a lot of the same logic is being applied to suggest that Rock Band is going to fizzle. Add in the MTV tie ins, and I think this has the possibility to be just as big, absolutely.

This can't be the full set list. I know of at least one song that's left off. Does this perhaps leave out a number of unlockable songs that haven't been announced, because I'd read that the game would have another Queens of the Stone Age song in addition to "Go With The Flow".

Again, downloadable content. Harmonix is promising new stuff weekly. I know Guitar Hero II has a left a bad taste in everyone's mouth in that area but in Rock Band we should trust.

Yeah, I now about the DLC, but like I said, I read that that other song would be included in the game. What I want to know is whether there are more songs on the disc that aren't on this setlist.

Just ask yourself this, do I want the inexpensive answer, or the more expensive one that gets you more swag. Also, what can you afford, that should also be taken into consideration. If ya don't have a ton of coin like me, just drop $60 on GHIII, it's really good.

I'm wondering what people will realistically pay for Harmonix's weekly downloads. We know for sure that The Who's "Who's Next" record will be downloadable, but what are you willing to pay for a track (supposedly you can download via track) and a total album?
I also wonder if the prices will be different between the PS3 and 360 given that Microsoft takes a chunk of the money for downloadable content, I'm not sure if Sony has the same sort of deal or not.

I don't know. What I do know is that being able to use real money was a factor in my choosing the PS3 version.
I officially don't care about this game anymore. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the music is pretty good but I am saving the buy in cost for my next music simulator for the one that brings me The Offspring.

Well I'll be buggered.
This is the official press release and they still couldn't move The Pixies "Wave Of Mutilation" into the 90's from the 2000's section.
Unless of course this is a recent live version of the track.
I did not go to high school in the 2000's goddamnit. And that's where they plucked that song from.
I say we repost this as news when they fix that.

I don't think it's at all surprising at this point in the game. We're still a month away, so the marketing blitz hasn't started. This is a game from EA and MTV... it'll hit, and it'll hit hard.

Did you ever play Donkey Konga? Bemani games can go astray without J-Pop. Also, Karaoke Revolution/Singstar did very well. Guitar Freaks/Drum Mania/Beatmania did poorly because someone with Harmonix's touch wasn't involved.

Man...this song listing is shit. It makes the GH 3 song list look amazing in comparison. I like how they probably ignored almost all of the metal suggestions that people put on the website, having even less in the main selection than GH3 does, and that has a paucity of it as well.
