View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are you playing?

With Summer being well into progress, many gamers are spending more time inside playing because of the insane heat levels. In Detroit I read that the temperatures had risen to 80 degrees fahrenheit.
Has anyone had the chance to check this news post (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3792) out? What are your thoughts about the real time tech demos from Sony? Personally I think Sony has met my realistic expectations of what games should look like.
Currently I am playing the new release for Half life 2 called Plan of Attack (http://www.planofattackgame.com/), I find it refreshing because I've played CS:S one too many hours so far. Anyways I hope you have a good safe weekend and don't stay out in the sun or you might get sun stroke which totally sucks.

Playing Jade Empire on my Xbox. Due to inhuman conditions here in Montreal (this week we saw a humid 30oC which felt like 40oC (104F)) my computer room feels like a sauna.
Jade Empire is a pleasant surprise: after reading some comments on this forum, I expected it to be much worse. To be frank, JE is the best game I've played since KotOR 1, if not even better than the latter.

Final Fantasy 8 (PS1)
I used to hate this game, but once you get used to junctioning magic it's pretty fun. And the enc-none ability (that gets rid of random battles) owns, as does the fact that you can play this game just fine without ever having to spend any time leveling up your characters with EXP/AP aside from what you receive during the main quest.

Most of my game time this weekend is going towards Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. It does warrent all of the good reviews it recieved. I am enjoying it very much.

I might be heading to a LAN today, not sure what'll get played there. I'm contemplating booting up FarCry again.
Warrior Within on the PC mainly (hush now, I got it cheap), which is actually alright but god damn, why is an exploding beast lower in volume than a breaking barrel? Plus other hilarious oversights, it's quite entertaining playing it to see what they messed up when it was quite perfect in SoT.
Viewtiful Joe on the GC too, damn they made that game totally mancore (well if you play on adult mode of course), it is a nice change of pace though.

Are you kidding me? Detroit? It's gone FAR above 80 degrees. I'm in fucking Toronto and we spent a solid week above 90 degrees fahrenheit (not counting the insane humidity). It's only finally cooled down in the last week (after we also, finally, got some bloody rain).
Wait a tic. You're in Toronto. Did you go on vacation for a few weeks there and miss it?
HAHAHA!!! 80 degrees fahrenheit... ....we hit 101 today....
..going back to some old games lately... ..pc I just installed TA and the original MYST. I do not remember if I beat either of them.
On consoles, Gamecube is getting some play with Baten Kaitos.. ..PS2 NCAA Football 06 and Xbox is Battlefield 2 demo.

To be honest I haven't played anything in about two or three weeks. Just the occasional game of Lumines and a Diablo 2 reunion LAN last night. Instead I've been reading a shit-ton of books. The two most notable ones are probably Carl Hiaasen's Sick Puppy and Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens.
I guess this isn't "Weekend Reader" so I'll move along now. :)

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens.
I didn't play anything myself when I read that. Isn't that a marvelous book? I've read a lot of apocalyptic novels but Good Omens stands out of the bunch.

I dont know! So many choices, as always, but I dont know. I havent gamed in over a week due to me being away, and I'm jonesing for a good game. I might try to get back into Atelier Iris, because I got sidetracked. Also, still plugging away at my 162 game season on MVP 2005. Had my ass handed to me today...that's what I get for staying away from videogaming for 150 hours. I did get to chew through most of Snow Crash though, so it wasnt a complete wash.

Mostly X-Men Legends, but I may play some Far Cry, plus I installed Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War so I will probably play that some. Got the Pariah demo, too, probably make a run through that.
Also, I play a ton of Meteos while I'm at work.
::edit::
Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett wrote a book together? I am so there it is unbelievable.

Well, I've been playing the hell out of Destroy All Humans since yesterday, and I must say, it's quite awesome. The telekentic powers are really what does it for me, being able to toss people around like rag-dolls, throw cars at the enemy, send tanks flying off into the ocean... The abduction beam on the saucer is quite cool as well.
As well, I read the first fifteen issues of Academy X, which pretty much takes me up to House of M. It sucks that the team behind that book are leaving in October, it's being taken over by someone else. Supposedly X-23 is going to be joining one of the Academy X teams... Lovely -.-

Haha, that's awesome. Hearing that makes me remember my childhood, playing on Los Angeles blacktop in the summer when it's 114 degrees out and the sky is a nice greyish orange. I've never met someone from anywhere else in the country where they have "Smog Alert" warnings, where children are forbidden to play outside at all.

Psi Ops is, in my opinion, the best action game on Xbox. Good physics, good AI, better-than-expected story and imaginative mind-powers. Looks like everyone eventually ripped off the way TK worked in Psi-Ops despite the fact that the game didn't sell that well. Damn, I expected a sequel.

100 in the shade here. So of course I was outside at my Uncle's going away party. He's retiring and moving to Texas.
But earlier this week I was playing my little bro's Doom 3 on the Xbox. First time I've played it and I can't believe anyone would complain about it. Yes the monster closets are weak but overall it's great. It's even got a System Shock vibe to it, IMHO.

Yeah, there's LOTS of blowing shit up. It's all about Telekinesis and physics + explosions. Oh, and sneaking up behind someone, draining their psi energy until their head explodes. Decent story and work on the rest of the game. At it's current price point, it's a complete gem. Then again, so is Beyond Good and Evil, so grab that one too if you haven't already.
I'm currently playing GTA:SA. Gotta love the mindless violence.

Playing some Flatout with a smattering of Killer 7 and Atelier Iris tucked in there for good measure.
Flatout's pretty fun for an arcadey racer. I love the destructable backgrounds and how things that you wreck on lap one will still be there on the track for the rest of the race, ready to send you flying into the walls or other cars. The physics is pretty good.
And the 'Fling Your Driver Out The Window' minigames are hilarious. I had some friends over and they must have spent a good half hour or so just laughing their heads off as we sent our little guy shooting into the air.
I also got a GBA SP yesterday (finally) for cheap so I can finally see what I'm playing in Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones without having to have a portable sun for a light source.
And I'm busy plugging away at Harry Potter. I can't believe that I got it last week at midnight and have barely had time to read it this week. I should probably stop playing games...

Groaning in pain as I review Juiced for my mag (okay, its not that bad but damn I know 101 games I'd rather be playing). Apart from that desperately trying to hit the 999,999 mark in Lumines, get a score above D+ in Polarium, re-visiting San Andreas on the PS2, slowly making my way through Jade Empire, God of War and Shin Megami Tensie: Nocturne (it only just came out in Australia... yeah, we're a bit behind on Atlus games). Oh yeah, I'm also playing far more BF2 than is good for my health.
Yes, I play a lot of games at once. :D

I played a bit of Gary's Mod for Half-Life 2 this morning. I had fun making a rideable balloon out of a dumpster, some attached balloons, and filing cabinets for ballast. Worked great until I got cocky and added thrusters that spun me out of control and eventually to my death.
And more work on Neverwinter Nights, which never ends. Trying to mix up the gameplay, different strategies on different levels.

I'm in Denver, Colorado and it's been hitting 105 (and feeling even hotter) these past few weeks. Now, my job consists of driving a non-A/C vehicle all around town, and going into houses that are being built (so of course, hot as hell) and template countertops. It's been absolutely horrible... too hot to even enjoy playing games. Today is the first day we've had any decent weather in a long while (it's only 81) so i'm definately rejoicing... of course, all this weekend i've been plugging away at Psychonauts... which is quite stupid of me, considering its almost 25 degrees cooler than it has been in a while now. oh well :) maybe i'll go out later this afternoon.

Reminds me of a time when I went into a video store several years after the Genesis' life span was over and the newer systems were out (kind of like how some stores still rent N64 games now) and picked up Shadowrun. I just took the rental copy up to the desk and said "You know, nobody is going to rent this anymore. Can I just buy it?" 5 bucks later it was mine.

I’m on my 4th playthrough of Growlanser II for PS2, and I just got my first real ending apparently; Charlone. Going to go back through it 8 more times and get the others. Good thing the game’s only about 10 hours long.
Also playing the multiplayer demo of BF2 for Xbox which is pretty fun. Problem is though that there seems to be no auto-balance, so the odds always seem completely stacked against the Arabs (a predictable problem). And since I’m one of those fools that believes in fair play I always end up on the team that’s down 3 guys. Note to EA, please add auto-balance.

Is Suikoden 4 really that bad? I'm just wondering because I played the first 90 min the other day and it seemed completely awful. I'm not sure I can bring myself to play on. Seems like a huge step back from 3 in every way.
Currently playing Romance of the Three Kingdoms X !
Now you know how i feel about the current sequals to grandia, the first was and still will be the best of the series.

Read Harry Potter HBP in six hours on the car ride home from Grandma's, then playing GTA:SA every chance I get for the rest of the week to get to the GANG WARS, where I KILL and BLOW SHIT UP! Bite me, you ESRB wankers! Whats a titty or two when I've had 700 some kills 26% of the way into the game?

It's been 108 here in central CA.
Bay Area and Detroit people whining about being in the 80s, jump off a bridge.
hehehe, I just moved out of Sacramento. I can complain about 80's if I want, i consider it an IQ test. :D

I live around Detroit, and mid-80s is normal for this time of year... Though, today it is supposed to reach 95 F. With the humidity, it's supposed to feel like 105-110! That's not normal at all!

Klonoa 2 is so ridiculously good. Whenever I think about it I pee a little with ecstasy. If only I could find a copy ;_;
I found mine in an EB for like $20 a year and a half ago or so. I was so excited to find it. I just need a copy of the first one, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. The great thing about Klonoa 2 is that it's a 3D world with a 2D interface. Makes the jumping puzzles so much more bearable since you only have to worry about 4 directions instead of 8. It's also got some of the most breath-taking visuals I've seen in a game for the PS2. That one stage in the Hall of Mirrors? Goregeous.

Maybe to get in the mood for Grandia 3 later this year?
I didnt enjoy 2, but the original was excellent. The 3rd installment looks to be excellent too. I just hope they dont flub it up like Konami did with Suikoden 4
2 is really up and down. I like the gameplay, though it has some pathing problems. The story is interesting, and some of the lines are good, but the religious allegory is a bit hamfisted and the character writing is really inconsistent. Art is nice though. Was it originally based on an anime? I noticed some of the special attacks are handdrawn animation.
They really should do a sequel to Skies of Arcadia. Boy that game rocked. That, and a portable version of Chrono Trigger.
Sega doesn't like money. I'm sure we'll see a portable Chrono Trigger eventually. Probably on the PSP, with fancying new loading times.

I've got a copy of Door to Phantomile AND the GBA version of the game to boot! Not that I'm giving you any of my Klonoa. They're MINE!
