View Full Version : Sisters of Battle announced for WH40K Expansion

From Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/warhammer40000dawnofwarsoulstorm/news.html?sid=6181715&tag=topslot;title;1). They're the second announced race, in addition to the previously known Dark Eldar.
The Sisters of Battle, on the other hand, are basically heavily armed warrior nuns and the feared enforcers of the Imperium. As described to us, they're basically the Spanish Inquisition in space. The Sisters are driven by faith, which lets them call on their God-Emperor for "Acts of the Faith," which are powerful abilities, like a protective hand that shields them from damage or raining brimstone down on the battlefield. These acts are fueled by faith, which can be generated if the Sisters divert resources from unit production and research. That will make you have to choose how much to spend on the economy and how much to spend on generating faith.
I'm grinning like an idiot right now. I was hoping against hope the Adeptus Sororitas would make the cut.

Sweet. I have no idea what to expect from this. I know a lot of fans were wanting the Tyranids(sp?) which a mod was made of them that turned out good. But this sounds fun as well. I no nothing of the 40k universe except from this game.
the games are my only experince to the 40k universe until someone i knew suggested the Horus heresy series thats currently being released. they are on book like 6 and it basically covers what sets up the universe and the battle between the imps and chaos

Why do they refuse to make the god damned tyranids!?!?? Every time there is an expansion pack I get my hopes up and get totally crushed. Its like when I heard they were making a movie adaptation of I am legend then I saw Will Smith was in it... crushed...<bang>

Best news I have heard all day! The Sisters were my choice back in the day of table top gaming, and then the Witch Hunters for them, and I have been praying (HA) that they would be in the expansion. As for the lack of Tyranid, I do belive that they said a long time ago that the engine could not support their vision of how the Tyranid should be, and that when DoW 2 came out with a new engine they would be in it.

As far as I know Tyranids do not appear until Dawn of War 2. They have said that the current engine just can't do the Tyranids at a level that they would find acceptable. And since this expansion pack was done by a 3rd party, one can only assume that Relic themselves are heavy at work on Dawn of War 2 and that whole persistent universe thing they kept talking about this past summer. Hopefully they are still planning to include Battlefleet Gothic.

So the Tyranids will be in DoW2? That would be awesome! Any ETA on that?

My best educated guess would be summer of 2008 at the earliest. Then again, Spring 2008 would be great as well. :) Relic doesn't seem to be a company that announces a game very far off from when its getting released. Since DoW 2 hasn't been announced yet, this is why I guess summer of 2008.

They have said time and time again that Tyranids wouldn't make the cut. It's the right choice.
Hopefully DoW2, but they haven't even announced it.
That aside, I always felt the Adeptus Sororitas was just a ploy to get sex starved kids to buy the figures.

Wow. This makes nine different factions. That must be some kind of RTS record.
I'm not exactly the best DOW player (not by a long shot), so I wonder how balanced all the races are by now. I mean, Blizzard has its hands full with just 3; I can't imagine how much of a pain in the ass it must be to get nine different armies to play well together. Even the two Space Marine and Eldar armies are only superficially similar.

I don't know about that. It makes sense, really. The Imperium is all about religion and devotion, and nuns have historically been a big part of that. And since everyone in the universe is quite literally out to get the human race, you can't really have them as a passive, peaceful order, like in the old days.
Heck, the figures aren't even that sexy. They wear just as much armor as everyone else.

Each patch you tend to have one or two "What the hell were they smoking?" changes that really bork things. However, that's only if you play the automatch where every smacktard has to win. If you play custom games, and games with more than a couple players. The game tends to balance itself out until Necrons hit T4.

With the current 7, they are very well balanced. While not to the mark of Blizzard's perfection in StarCraft, there are no outstanding balance issues.

What?! No outstanding issues?! The balance is terrible between the armies! DoW and it's expansions have some of the worst balance I've ever seen.
It's a fun series, no doubt. I would hate to try and play this game in any kind of semi-serious tournament.

Find some older ones, and the hardcore players of 40k think scarred up women are sexy. That's not a joke.

The balance issues are almost entirely 1 on 1. Once you get more players in the game the balance is pretty well done. It's not a great 1 on 1 competitive RTS, but I don't feel it has to be. Besides, imbalance is part of the source material :D

Steam has it and you can probably get the platinobsigoldinum edition at retail somewhere for 20 bucks.
I would save it for the summer drought though.
Personally I think DOW is one of the most balanced games I have seen and I would say better than Starcraft. I think what you are referring to is that some armies start weak and get very powerful if you don't take steps to prevent it. If you think it is unbalanced you are not using your army right.
*sigh* I was hoping they would flesh out the chapters rather than add the SoBs.

Once nice thing about this expansion is that, according to the article, it'll be standalone for single player. You'll be able to play all nine armies right out of the box, and there's a pretty meaty campaign that should last quite a while. You'll need the other games to play anything other than Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle multiplayer, however.
Check out the videos off that page if you haven't already. Penitent Engines and Seraphim, oh my. Or is that a Celestian Superior?

That's untrue. At 1580 on the ladder for a long while until I stopped playing. Most races have another race that will completely face fuck them into the ground. Some have two or three. So, the idea that it's poorly balanced. Pretty much comes from all the 1v1'rs.

Odd, and I disliked Dark Crusade for the exact same reason. It gave you a ton more options, but the campaign felt pretty weak.

Yes, because clearly, opinions are overrated and heaven forbid that anyone disagrees or dislikes one part of the fluff, but likes the other parts of it.
Put simply, I like the sisters of battle, I like their fluff. I DO NOT like the history of 40k where basically, EVERYONE is the bad guy, including the space marines, the imperium of man, etc.
This is the very reason why the Tau was created. Because there were so many freaking "Bad" Armies, there were no "GOOD" armies. No light in the darkness. Thus the Tau.
Personally, I play evil armies alot. Chaos Dwarfs, Vampire Counts, Dark Elves in Fantasy. Necrons and Chaos (Slaanesh) in 40k.
So I apoligize if you don't like the fact that I hate the history of the Imperium but like the Sisters of Battle. That's your beef, not mine. I'm actually amused you take an affront to it, as if it was a personal slight measured against your person.

Kinda off topic, but this is exactly why I dont play ( desktop ) Warhammer. I started to, I collected and painted a Dark Elf army and was pretty pumped. Then I realized the guy in charge of army create ( gavin thrope or something like that ), was a complete fucking tool fanboy. Play balance was completely fucked. You could see what his two favorite armies were ( High Elves and Chaos ), and you saw what happened as a result. The High Elves got most of the unique interesting Dark Elf units ( like the repeating bolt thrower ) and Chaos got even more uber. Chaos Undivided in a single stroke took away all the disadvantages of chaos and made them by far and away the most powerful army in the game.
I gave up on it at that point. Simply stated, you cant have an assclown incharge of playbalance, it just doesnt work. I don't know if Games Workshop has finally fired his ass, but somehow I doubt it.

Gavins still there, but the High Elves and Chaos aren't his favorite armies. Chaos has almost always been overpowered in Fantasy. High Elves were kinda gimped. Most armies stomped over them easy, especially in the 7th edition now.
The problem you came across, was that Gavin, the idiot wrote a weak ass dark elf book, and then fought the community tooth and nail that it was solid and they just needed better strategies. However, Druchii.net, a Dark Elf Fansite and Community, proved him wrong, and for the first time in the history of Games Workshop, the development team caved and rewrote the book, forcing Gavin thorpe to do it.
Gavins Favorite army is Dwarfs. Period. I believe he wrote that book too, and once again, you have the staple of the Dwarven Gun Line.
However, Jervis Johnson is in charge of the Fantasy team right now, and the man is solid when it comes to balance. 7th edition is out and is solid and good. Every book thus far has been pretty damned nice and well balanced. High elves are coming out again soon, and they have a rule that states that they will always strike first, even if someone else charges them. However, this is balanced out by their weak arse toughness 3. Something my undead and Chaos Dwarf Earthshaker Cannons LOVE...
As well as my Chaos Dwarf Blunderbusses...
So to sum up, yes, Gavin is an Idiot, and he is still there. However, he is NOT in charge like I believe he was last edition. Jervis Johnson is, and he is toning EVERYTHING down whether the development team likes it or not.

May be worth checking it again if I had any local friends that played. When I was looking into it, it was 3rd edition going onto 4th. The Undead was still a single army at that time, for example.

Wow man, that single sentence right there gives me an exact ideal of your age and how long you've been in the hobby. Amazing. Be glad you missed the advent of Hero Hammer. That iteration was HORRIBLE.
Now, everything is based on the Army and your TROOPS, not the hero with the OMFGHYDRASWORD OF DEATH, Crown of COmmand, and boots of "I Kick jo arse".
Yeah, the undead being a single army was nice back in the day. Now you have what the Team calls wet and dry undead. Vampire counts being Wet for Zombies, skeletons, etc. Dry for the Tomb Kings, being sandy bone bleached lichy type undead.
Put simply, things have changed for the better. THe game is very strategic now, alot like Chess. I love it.

Dude, Im only 3 years older then you! ;)
I actually was in a Games Workshop store in the mall a few weeks back. It was beside the maternity store... there is no place more boring for a guy then a maternity store... plus all the women that work there seem to be ultra militaristic dykes. Irony of a bunch of dykes working at a maternity store isnt lost on me...
Wow, back on track, mind is wandering today! Anyways... I am not an uptight prick, and I am not judgemental of people. I am a geek, but it suprises most people to learn that, if that makes sense. Anyways, my brief encounter with a GW store convinced me that I am never EVER going to rejoin that hobby.
See, I don't so much mind the ultra geekness, thats actually kinda cool. People willing to place tabletop games in the middle of a shoping mall have embraced their geekdom fully and thats cool. My issue... the fucking store smelled. Really really really fucking aweful. It literally stunk of sweat and non bathing. This, is a really hard thing to reconcile. See, I can handle being around geeks, but not people without the social graces to bathe! Yeesh.

Dark Crusade has widescreen support natively, the others require a change in the local.ini file in the game folder. Only problem is (unless they've changed things recently) the game just zooms in closer on the battlefield instead of actually changing the resolution, so you're not getting a wider viewing area. Evidently, this was by design.

LOL, yeah, I know. But still, it does tell me how long you've been a gamer. Which is QUITE long. If you remember 3rd edition Fantasy...wow.
Regardless, I agree with you. But in general I've found that problem to be an excaberate problem amongst gamers of all types. If you've ever been to Gen Con or A-Cen, you'll know what I mean. Hell, Any convention. Its like the mummy man. You get a bar of soap, stick it on a long stick, and wave it around gamers and I swear to the almighty you will have the horde scatter faster then little debbie going down at a fat kid convention.
Its frigging hilarious.
If you can, find a local gaming shop. There ARE a bunch of Warhammer Fantasy players older then you and I. These are like the die hard fanatics of War games on Tabletop. But in all things, you find your ups and your downs.
Gods...sorry for the derail. If I was around I'd play a game of Fantasy with ya man, re-introduce you to it. But I think You'd have the urge to throttle me after 3 solid rounds of my earthshaker cannons almost never missing. (I swear...my dice are ungodly. It's one of the reasons why my players HATE me as DM when it comes to combat. I roll too many crits)

The reason it was done this way wasn't performance based, it was balanced based. They didn't want to give widescreen users a tactical advantage over fullscreen users.
I'm not commenting on if it is right or not, merely why it is the way it is.

I used to play warhammer back in the day as well, I don't quite remember what edition it was, but I'm thinking it was about 10 years ago?
Anyways what pretty much killed warhammer for me was the play balance and GW's response to it.
Case and Point, I used orcs and goblins a lot and one of my friends had just started a lizardman army (they were new at the time) so I looked in to their rules and all that and figured the best strategy against them would be just to one shot their general with a mork battle standard (i think thats what it was the one that blows up mage heads) anyways I put my battle standard out of range with a cockatrice and went high fly all that and landed on his general causes his wizardy head to explode. My friend flipped out about this and e-mailed games workshop about a ruling.
The ruling was "your friend is a jerk and a power gamer".
At that point I said F-this and quit.
Not like I complained about brettonia vs skaven imbalances!

Whatever does this make sense to anyone?
I had a run in with a pain in the ass rule like that.
My friends and I mostly played 40k and had just recently started playing fantasy. I was fielding an entirely Khorne daemon army, my friend had a Lizardmen army. At one point I decided to fly my Bloodthirster so I could land behind his general and take him out on my next turn. Turned out his general, that giant toad special character, had a special ability that once cast wouldn't allow any flying character to land within a radius of something ridiculous like 50 or 60 inches of him until it was dispelled.
We were playing on a pool table so my Bloodthirster was effectively stuck in the air for the rest of the game. Suffice to say, the rest of the game did not go any better for me.

wait-what? no tyranids?I have to assume that their current engine can't do the Tyranid masses justice so they're holding off on them until the sequel where they'll roll out a new engine that can do hundreds of enemies on screen at once. Even though the game's pretty good for masses of guys, it might not be good enough.
I do like the Sisters of Battle though; this'll be fun. Hopefully they'll have a free-form sort of single player like they did with the last expansion. Oddly it was probably actually easier to do than a scripted campaign, and I got way more enjoyment out of it.

So I apoligize if you don't like the fact that I hate the history of the Imperium but like the Sisters of Battle. That's your beef, not mine. I'm actually amused you take an affront to it, as if it was a personal slight measured against your person.
That's probably the main reason I like the 40K universe so much (and why I just plain don't like the Tau) as it was never about Good Vs Evil, it was about survival. Some races were just doing what they do (orks, Tyrranids) with no real moral quandry, while others did things that were obviously questionable, but deemed best for their advancement (humanity, Eldar). Some were just not very nice (necrons, Chaos, D. Eldar).
For the most part it was a collective of races fighting it out for their own personal gain. A side for the force of "good" in my opinion is a dull and pointless one in a universe made up of shades of grey. In particular I like how when you look at the history, mankind isn't deemed Good just by the grace of being humanity.
On topic, I also really like the Sisters because they were an army much more grounded in the backstory of the universe and the religious zealotry and despotism that has marred the empire of man than just surplanting Fantasy archtypes into a sci-fi setting.

Everytime a new expansion comes out for this game, it makes me want to get back into the tabletop version of it all. I had a fledgeling army of Eldar, and a slightly larger Dark Angels attack wing. I would read the rule book for hours, just trying to get into it all (it was tough for me at the time, being 12 years old). Unfortunately, being 12 years old means that no one that you know plays such a complex game. So, after my little brother destroyed about half of both forces, I shelved everything.
I should really try to get back into 40K sometime, though, and get a few squads of Striking Scorpions back up and at 'em. :D

similar story here. i had a dark angels epic army, and actually got to play a few times. i wanted to play 40k, but this was nearly 20 years ago, when it was still that massive book - none of this boxed set business. the book was so awesome for getting you hyped for the game, though :)
epic was fun (and cheaper - pretty much all plastic models). i'd like to get back into playing epic. i think my parents still have my models somewhere. i think... maybe not any more. but i'd also kinda like to just paint up a 40k army... my friend got me a thunder-hammer/storm shield terminator - i did it in deathwing colours and it looked pretty awesome (i thought). that's the only 40k model i ever had.

I still keep supplies on hand and about 2 dozen miniatures from a few ranges just to paint them up. Dunno why, It just really feels good.

I still have a couple of old lead and pewter Citadel Miniatures laying around. Have most of the early books from Rogue Trader on.
I have huge Orc & Goblins and Ork armies. Most painted up. Orks are bolstered by a set of figs and vehicles from a GorkaMorka set. (That went nowhere!)
My best painting job is an Orc Blood Bowl team that I assembled for a league that I won years ago.
I also have a nice diorama that I painted up for when I took my son to Games Day LA 2004. He had a nice Thousand Sons squad.
One of the highlights of my life was when I finished painting an entire 2,000 Space Wolf army. So bad ass.

It'd be terribly hypocritical to mock you for geekiness on a gaming forum...
But I really want to.

Dunno if you actually meant that as a joke, but I found it pretty hilarious. Thanks.
Now, the real question is. Was it Gork or Mork? :D
