TOKYO - Microsoft is slashing Xbox 360 prices in Japan by about 13 percent as the price war among video game consoles heats up around the world ahead of the key year-end shopping season.
The Xbox 360 console will sell in Japan for 34,800 yen ($304) beginning Nov. 1, down from 39,795 yen ($348), the U.S. software maker's Japan unit said Monday in a statement.

A more basic version of the machine now selling for 29,800 yen ($261) will go for 27,800 yen ($243), according to Microsoft Corp.

I was just reading this news on the Wii... the core for under $250? That's kind of neat.

All this is going to do is divert units that could have been sold here to shelves that they will sit endlessly on over there.

The release of the Elite last week reported boosted sales 4 fold!

To 6000+.

I can only imagine that this price cut will help maintain ~3000 for the next month...?

Since the last thread about Sony pleading and all that jazz, I look a little more closely now when the source says Mercury News. Or anyone from there for that matter.

Since Wii went on sale late last year, Nintendo has shipped 9.3 million units around the world, with supplies barely keeping up with demand.

I believe the Wii has shipped far more than 9.3 million units seeing as how the widely accepted figures for units SOLD is at ~12.5 million. Do they still believe that the 360 is still number one in sales??

Seriously, Microsoft seems to be the only one who doesn't see the futility in this action.

Our local Fred Meyer has been running a weird sale randomly. Buy one game get the second half off and its major games. And now they are out of games hahahaha. Shouldn't have included Halo 3 and Gears on that.

So there is the 34800 yen Premium, and a special bundle value pack that is 34800 with Viva Pinata and Forza 2? So are these the same xbox's? Why would anyone get the Premium if the Value is a better deal? Same hard drive and stuff?

Better than nothing. They might as well sell as many of the things they can while they can.

I wonder if there's a website called Evir Avatal in Japan, where the Microsoft Defense Force constantly claims that people on the site are Sony biased, a man named Kamarot posts only negative Microsoft news, and people are constantly calling for Golvi to be mod.

Meanwhile, a user called "TheFryingOlc" constantly posts pictures of Doctol Doom, long after the joke has grown stale.

I predict they'll sell at least 1 more additional unit with the price cut. To me, hehe.

Borrowed a friend's to catch up on everything I have missed since mine broke in March, luckily a lot of the big games are region free so I can use the games I have been buying (Bioshock, Halo etc), and I still have my broken Box's HDD for arcade games.

It's almost holidays here though, so he'll probably want it back shortly.

You could reduce the price to 1 yen in Japan and it would still get outsold by every other piece of electronic equipment out there. It's a good thing Japan is basically irrelevant nowadays, otherwise this would actually be concerning.
