EA (http://www.eagames.com/) has launched the BF2 Combat Tour of Duty (http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=communityupdate_072105) with PlanetCombat (http://www.planetcombat.net/) and a ranked server admin program. (http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=communityupdate_072105_02)

Here are the details on both...
The Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty, is a unique community which will allow players to experience Battlefield 2 as never before. Featuring multiple ten-hour battles every week (of which members can attend as many or as little as they like) the Tour of Duty offers members a hierarchically-structured environment replete with cool features...Perhaps the coolest thing about the Tour of Duty is that the world changes dynamically not only after each battle but also after each three month Tour. That means generals are able to decide what areas they will attack next, and the maps played will reflect these decisions. Members will also be able to bring their unlocked weapons in on battle day and will get priority selection for BF2 Combat's public ranked servers.

Planet Combat Network Ranked Server Admin program, which has been designed and implemented by Planet Combat and will be coming to you on EA Official Servers worldwide. This unique system will allow all players the opportunity to moderate the experience they are having on our servers and have a positive impact on the communities in which they play. As well as servicing the EA Official Servers, you will also encounter Planet Combat teams on NVIDIA servers, Zboard servers, and Game Daemons servers.
Thanks to Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/) for the tip.

Complaints about EA aside, the Combat Tour of Duty sounds very cool.

Sounds like what Cavedog wanted to do with TA and TA: Kingdoms and never got off the ground.

That does sound neat...they should make there program work better first before adding more features.

I'm not going to shell out cash for this until I hear more stuff about it. I want to know it is successful...and...you know, fun before I consider it. If anyone here signs up for it, it would be great to get a review of it in a week or so.

Sounds interesting... but how many people are going to be reliable enough for that kind of extended campaign gameplay?

I mean, it was hard enough keeping people together to do clan vs. clan Quakeworld matches.

FPS folks probably aren't as dedicated as the armchair generals out there...

This Tour of Duty thing is NOT something created by EA, it's just gotten EA's endorsement.

It costs money as well.

10 hours? Whoa.

Sorry, not interested unless there is some feature that eliminates the serverturds from the rosters.

This would have to be cheap to even consider it. Sounds fun but not at a monthly cost.
10 hours a week? Anymore I am lucky to get 10 hours every 2 weeks. Almost sounds like a part time job.

"unique" "innovative" ?
they got to be kidding,
mfots offered the same thing for half-live day of defeat
at least 6 years ago (still running)
and there are quite a few tournaments that do it for BF2
(global conflict, 21stcentury) for free

$10 for each 'Tour of Duty' which lasts 12 weeks. I'm with the previous poster, I will wait for the first tour to be finished then gauge the reaction. If it proves to be as fun as it sounds, $10 for 3 months is a drop in the bucket.

Not to mention that Command and Conquer did this for free with the Firestorm expansion pack. Money-sucking vampires. I'm not paying some third-party to play a game I already bought. :p

How about I spend $10 and you FIX THE DAMN GAME.

Somebody needs to rework their priorities. Course, in this instance, EA/DICE is doing exactly squat anyways.

This is not EA, they just 'approved' it. It's a third party custom thang.

Yeah, this is another company trying to profit from BF2. Seems pretty cool.

I've signed up for one of the MEC divisions.

How about you announce the release of the SDK so I can stop dealing with BF2's stupid issues and play a mod crafted by a group that actually cares about their community???
