This isn't strictly game related, but:

Jeff Swystun, Interbrand's global director, said Sony's varied, and sometimes confusing, brand portfolio, which includes the PlayStation video game console, consumer electronics, music, movies and VAIO computers, seems too disparate to add value back to the Sony corporate brand. Samsung, on the other hand, is a "monolithic brand," he said, in that every product ties directly back to the corporate brand.

I think part of SONY's brand problem is that they insist on so many proprietary formats. If they'd just play nice and try to get standardized formats. But I guess they'll never learn from the whole Betamax thing...

That, and they don't understand the value of quality control... "Hey, if everything we make breaks, then they'll just have to buy more!"

Samsung is not exactly small fry.

Not only that, but if something does go wrong, Samsung's customer service is quick, knowledgable, and possibly the best I've ever head. I'm so much happier with them than with Sony.
I had a power surge cause two dead pixels on my tv last year; a serviceman was out the next day, and a week later they replaced the very expensive light engine, did a calibration, gave me a bunch of screen cleaner, and everything...all for free. The delay was caused by a need to special order the engine.

My customer service experience with Sony mostly involves being on hold forever, and them asking me to turn stuff off and then turn it on again.

Sony is terrible with almost everything they make.. build quality isn't so good on anything, and everything is overpriced and ... worse than competition.

some products such as PSP excluded.. although the build quality on those i'd still say are so-so.

But still, Sony sells.

For some reason I can't fathom. Well, I do like my Cybershot camera, it's been great so far. And we've had two TV sets from them, neither of them have given us problems.

Other than that, Sony isn't really too great.

What lesson were they supposed to learn from "the whole Betamax thing"? Don't do proprietary formats, because another proprietary format may come along later and beat it?

Every electronic componet I purchase is either inexpensive or its samsung. Ram, dvd drives, monitor, television.. none of them to show any problems yet (and my LCD monitor was bought used).

Samsung warranty = 1 year parts and labor.
Sony's = 3 months

So if you buy a $5000 TV from Sony and it breaks on you in the 4th month you are s.o.l.

Is the general concensus that a Samsung LCD TV is better overall than Sony or is there an better option. Might send by PM as I think this might highjack the thread.

I am looking to replace my 27" Sony TV that, admittedly, I have had no problems with. Something in the range of 42-50" is what I'm thinking.

Samsung's LCD's are top notch in general. You can't go wrong with one of them.

I agree though, they have too many proprietary formats that no other company chooses, and that's usually the difference. Other formats are standards that a few companies will adopt, while Sony usually goes against the grain. And their formats are usually over priced. Memorysticks for example are typically priced higher, and even though they claim the same amount of storage, a 128 meg memory stick will only hold about 110 meg of data.

This is happening because Samsung really turned its act around and is now selling superior products in most categories.

I think part of their brand problem is that they make faulty garbage.

This is so funny because I do business with samsung and they acutally make the LCD's that go into Sony's LCDs. But I guess people are more influenced by word of mouth from the Best Buy employee trying to sell them the extended warranty than actual product knowledge. Samsung does white label LCD's for Sony, stop trying to say theyre higher quality when its the same people making the damn products...

All of my products are Samsung, as I have too many bad experences with sony products breaking and have never had a problem with Samsung. I highly suggest buying their stuff, it is reliable and nearly always cheaper. I also worked for EB Games and know very well that Sony uses a poor warrenty and high defect rate to boost sale numbers of the PS2. Out of the consoles Sony has the highest defect rate that is very close to one in ten.

I wouldn't know shit about their TVs. All I know is that in the last 2 years I've had a 400 dollar Sony Clie, a 700 dollar Sony car stereo, and two PS2s die on me, and the first 2 PSPs I picked up had a shitload of dead pixels... the one I ended up with has dust under the screen, but I guess I've just got to live with that since it's either that or dead pixels.

Every format is proprietary until everybody else adopts it.

I'll tell you what they learned from betamax, they learned that american consumers, who're saddled with NTSC, can't tell a superior video product when they have one, but that professionals and europeans with PAL televisions had no problem picking the superior tech.

Derivatives of beta can be found in damned near every television studio on the planet, fyi. VHS can be found the homes of poor people who can't afford DVD. Guess which one probably has higher profit margins?

Sony as an entire company has let its consumer electronics division go to seed while focusing primarily on the cash cow ps1/ps2. Back when they still had firmly entrenched brand loyalty, people would pay the premiums for their electronics, now they won't.

Samsung just gets better and better, though. Hopefully they won't get to fat and comfortable.

memory stick is faster, fyi, than less expensive alternatives.

If they actually got significant market share, cost of manufacture would go down per unit, and they'd probably be more competitively priced. Chicken and the egg type scenario, that.

Why do people keep saying Sony lost out on Betamax?! The consumer application didn't do so well, but they made a killing in the business sector. TV stations used betamax equipment all the time!

Of course, the American consumer can also read a price tag. That has a whole lot to do with it.

I would like to throw in, that in my selling of cell phones to the unsuspecting mass populus, the Samsung A650 for verizon, and the Samsung I660 for sprint, rank among the crappiest of phones that a person can buy.

They not only have the most problems service side (getting a signal, keeping a signal) they also just plain old break a lot.

But then again they are the makers of the FREE phone you get at cell phone shops, except for the high end fodder they offer, like the i600/ above that. And then you are buying a cheaper version of a treo 650. a cheaper version that breaks a lot.

but then again that's just their cellphone department. maybe the make a really decent... blender?

I kinda think its good that they try to push proprietary formats, ok, they sometimes fail, but I think its good for competition and the advancement of Technology..

I too have a Sony Wega, and Sony home audio components. Granted ... I'm looking to upgrade, but I've never had a problem with these appliances. I always thought of Samsung as being a weaker brand, but I guess I am wrong.

Continue trying to fuck yourself in the ass with your own dick? I don't know.

To those talking about the Wega (or Vega), I also own a 32 inch Wega and it has been an EXTREMELY good television. The picture quality is unmatched for standard def TVs. Unfortunately for the Wega line, the quality no longer justifies the price.

TV stations use Betacam. Betamax isn't anywhere near broadcast quality, it'd be like using VHS.
