View Full Version : 360 Version of Unreal Tournament 3 in Doubt

CVG is reporting (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=173703) a quote from Epic president Mike Capps that casts some doubt on whether the 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 will ever see the light of day"Were just on PlayStation 3, so we get to focus on that platform,"Whether that means they're just working on the PS3 version now, or they're dropping the 360 version completely is unclear.
Update: Mark Rein, Epic Games VP, spoke with CVG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=173725&preview=yes&site=cvg) to clarify.
Basically the quote was taken out of context, the 360 version is still coming.
The 360 port had previously been pushed into 2008. Publisher Midway said previously that the PS3 version had slipped into 08 as well (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37136&highlight=unreal+tournament), although Epic holds out hope that it can be on store shelves before Christmas. The PC version, a demo of which was released last week, is still tentatively slated for a November release.

After the rather "meh" demo this one is in doubt on my PC as well.

UT3 would probably feel terrible on a gamepad, it had very fast movement going on. I'd rather just got that extra Gears chapter.

I'm pretty sure that was also said before, and it was explained that they're only working on the PS3 version of the game right now, as far as consoles, and the 360 port will come once that's complete.

Would be rather stupid to ingonre such a large shooterbase as a whole. In fact, I find this PS3 priority kind of strange.

It's because the PS3 version is how Unreal Engine 3 will get working on the PS3. The actual selling of the PS3 version is secondary to getting the engine working.

It is very beneficial to Epic to have both graphically-focused systems succeed, as they make engines that can be ported across them. They can make much, much, much money by having both of them do equally well. Since PS3 is the weaker horse in this race, they can help even the odds by making one of their games exclusive.

I'm with Vandenh on this one. Wasn't really feeling the PC demo too much, so I'm not that disappointed. Hopefully they get the PS3 version out this year though. Would be a nice holiday for the owners if they do.

They're only TALKING about the PS3 version right now because they are being true to their agreement and they want it to sell as well as it can. They've had a 360 build at conventions before, so it is definitely in the works (easy to port from PC to 360).

Ahh, that makes more sense. My point was still that I doubt the 360 version is going to be canceled.

Judging by the reaction to the PC demo, it wouldnt be a huge loss.

Between CoD4 and Orange box I really don't have a need for UT3 on my 360. I'd be fine with a full cancellation at this point.

"I don't like the game so I don't care."
I love how some feel the need to share such a statement.
On topic, hopefully this gets some competitive wheels turning.
Interested to see how it turns out on PS3, and the parity between it and the PC.

I completely agree with Deadend.
Huge loss or not considering the user base of the 360 it really would be a financial mistake to ignore it. Not only does the PS3 have a much smaller user base at the moment but the typical owners of the PS3 I think have tastes very similar to Gorvi, they may enjoy the occasional shooter but it is far from their list of must buy games. Add to that multi-player only and it narrows even more.
Now, I completely agree with focusing on the PS3 version and working out all the kinks to get it running as close to or on par with the 360 version and then putting it out on the 360 later. Knowing all the little difficulties of the PS3 when using UE3 and being able to apply that to other games and help out other developers will be a far better thing in the long run than selling 1M copies of one game right out of the gate. Besides They will probably sell more 360 copies waiting until the end of the first quarter/beginning of the second quarter than if they released now.

If you want to see how it turns out on the PS3 just download the PC demo. It was just copy&pasted from the PS3 onto the PC. The server browser conveniently lets you know which servers allow keyboard and mouse. The full experience is there for you.

Knew it. I like this quote concerning the lack of detail tweaks in the beta:
"We're trying hard not to confuse users with a hundred different graphical settings and come up with the right balance of installer-selected settings, easy configuration and end-user documentation. The beta showed that we still have some work to do in these areas but that we're making very good progress.
That's an understatement. The "Advanced" graphical settings page is a joke right now. Two sliders to adjust with no way of knowing what the settings mean? Bad form!

The UI is the worst aspect of the demo. The server browser is completely broken ATM, and their options screens really do look like they were simply copy/pasted from the PS3 version of the game...
They have a lot to do before November, and I'm having doubts they can pull it off.
That being said, I'd rather see UT3 delayed than released as it is right now. The gameplay and graphics are fine, but that UI needs a complete overhaul.

As the resident UT whore, I found the demo to be pretty decent, but admittedly MOTS. The gameplay is still pretty solid though when compared to other online shooters, and I'm relieved to see that it plays nice on my aging PC. Still, there's so much competition right now, I really don't see this game having the impact that the previous ones did.

I think this will only do as well as the UC game did way back when. Unless they get an amazing amount of marketing. But after Shadowrun, people will just complain about no single player, no sell.

UT3 does have a singleplayer component according to Epic. Heck, UT2004 had a better single player experience than Shadowrun did!

I liked the demo, it felt more like UT99 which to me is a good thing. I was somewhat shocked at how limited the graphics settings are in the demo though. It doesn't look bad by any means but when a 3200+ with a gig of ram and a 6800 GT can run it flawless you start to wonder why they didn't let us jack the graphics up to show off the Unreal 3 engine in all its glory.
Still looking forward to taking the full version for a spin knowing there's settings that will be at least playable on my outdated machine. Also looking forward to the Unreal3 version of America's Army that is supposidly on track for sometime in 2008.

Quoted for TRUTH.
I fully expect that when Epic is done with UT3 for PS3, they'll be updating their builds that devs can download -- and their games will likely see a performance increase immediately.

Wrong answer... they "earn" them. I think that getting the Unreal engine working on PS3 is a way bigger concern to Sony then this one game.
With all the competition for shooters on 360 right now along with other AAA titles coming out this month and next, they can delay it for as long as they want in my book since it will only be lost in the shuffle if they released it now.
With the PS3 it's a bigger deal since there isn't much competition and they have more of a chance to move units.

But it still wasn't as awesome Shadowrun. :-p
We shall see. UC had no fucking story. If they learned a lesson, then more power to them.

I've played UT3 on the PS3 @ GDC. It worked fine. Obviously not to the degree of a mouse/keyboard, but it was more than playable. Actually, there was some guy flailing who obviously was a PC player and had never touched a gamepad or something. I grabbed the pad and whipped around like it was WADS/mouse and his jaw hit the floor.
It's just a matter of practice, as long as the implementation is solid.
As for there being a 360 version, OF COURSE there will be. The PS3 doesn't have enough units to justify the expense of only doing a PS3 version of a game running on a cross-platform engine.
I do have to say, I think this will be a case where the 360 version is noticeably inferior to the PS3 version (rare, as far as I'm concerned).
Either way, I love console FPS's and I'm getting this on PC... :p

Those are the exact sames specs as me, but I have more ram. It runs really smooth, but with my dialed down settings it looks the same as UT2004 (albeit with larger levels).

It all seems to depend on context though. A FPS on the PC or 360 is boring and stale, just not the kind of game that the average PS3 owner likes - Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Unreal Tournament.
A FPS on the PS3, on the other hand, is innovative and fresh, exactly the kind of thing they've been looking for - Killzone 2, Call of Duty 4, Unreal Tournament
The same goes for multiplayer only games. MP-only games on the 360 (not as much on the PC side) get blasted for being shallow and lacking value - or in the case of Shadowrun's 9 maps, not having any variety.
But a PS3 release of a multiplayer only title (Warhawk) is amazing value, and having only 5 maps is perfect for learning the layout.
See? Context.
Tried the demo and I wasn't too impressed. I'll bypass this one. I'm done with the UT franchise. The vehicles are hard to control. The double tapping sideways is awkward and I've always disliked it. And it has way too many game modes that split up the community thin, especially if you're just looking for a quick deathmatch game.

Call me names if you want...
The Unreal franchise is where I've sunk most of my gaming years.
That being said...
I liked that the movement system in the demo wasn't psychotic. You can't dodge jump, boost dodge wall jump, or generally freak out on the keyboard and do something sickening.
The weapons felt better... still think the flak cannon is a problem. Impact hammer is great - no more shoot/retreat/shieldgun stupid. The enforcers... don't feel perfect like they used to... but much better than the assault rifle.
I like the return of the Tarydum gun (minigun from Unreal Botmatch). Overall... I don't think it was enough of a demo to really get an impression tho... but Im anxious to play.
The engine ran very well on my computer - but it should since it's a fairly high end system.
Only one map didn't run at a smooth 60fps, the second of the two deathmatch maps. Was a little harder on the puter.
And yeah - it would be in Epic's interest to market to all platforms... especially when you license an engine.

From the videos Ive seen it looks like a case of the previous game in the series just getting a graphical facelift and nothing more. Nothing I saw excited me. Just like any of the Battlefields, Quake 4, CS Source. Just seems likee another reason to question why any of us own a gaming PC.
Ill eep the engine, pass on the game. PS3 can have it along with the Blu-Ray player.
@Micasa
Halo 3 boring and stale!? What the hell are you playing on the PS3 (games that have yet to come out it seems)?? In my opinion a platform that isnt recieving too great support and has no 1st party development is pretty boring and stale. Check this out http://www.bungie.net/stats/halo3/screenshot_viewer_popup.aspx?gamertag=Darth%20Xzer o&ssid=5411635 and reevalute.
