The lack of online play is deplorable.
I have played all three titles in this series, and I have yet to see the charm. The first one was different, I felt, but since then I have no idea what is so special about them. Heck, Soul Calibur (Sequal to Soul Blade/Edge) wasn't even well-rated until it got a graphical touchup on the Dreamcast.
I can't see the screen shots that well because my eyes are fluttering in the back of my head. Must....have.....it.

And I thought Cloud's sword was humongous.
Never played SC games and I never will, it seems.

Why? Because the dude has a big sword? Great judging criteria.
Soul Calibur for Dreamcast.
THE SOUL STILL BURNS.

This exclusivity seems destined to make this series mediocre and played by less people. Is the short term buck worth the long term devaluement of the IP?

Meh. Only for PS2, which appears to still have the jaggies. No online play. And one of the new characters has a giant metal ring as a weapon, which it appears she would not even be able to physically lift, let alone use as a weapon. And I thought Nightmare's sword was bad.......
Bah, pass. SC2 didn't even do that much for me either. I'll stick with the original.

:p Screw all you Soul Caliber haters! Go play your tekken lagg and world of warcrash and let Soul Caliber 3 live! Every game doesnt need to have online play or slow moving punches. Soul Caliber is a great series and should be respected like and old person. Great Graffics, Great Gameplay, and custom characters just three things better than anyother fighter game out there.

I really don't know how much I can respect Soul Calibur anymore for going exclusive. That was a game that shined largely because it was not exclusive, and I don't see how doing this will better the series in any way.

Soul Edge was just on the PS1, I believe, Soul Calibur Dreamcast....the only one that wasn't exculsive was SC2. Not sure why this seems to be coming out of left-field.
Haters, haters all!
Keep your non-Soul Calibur-knowing-how-to-play-asses on the sidelines!
You don't like not having online, go play all of those well-tuned online fighters, like say... Matrix Online or the lagtastic Street Fighter on XBox.
You don't like the PS2, keep playing Soul Calibur 2 on your GameCube/Xbox.
You don't like the ring-girl, don't play her or gleefully stomp her when she comes up in the roster.
And finally, you don't like it, don't play it.
Man, everybody hates for a living, huh?

Man, I love Soul Caliber, but not enough to buy it on the PS2. I bought a GameCube because I wanted to play SC2 as Link. Don't think I would ever want to degrade to PS2.
I just dont understand fighting games. Maybe they were interesting in 1992 but come on now. Its just the same game with new graphics every 3 years.

Totally lame that it's exclusive to PS2. Even the lack of arcade is sad.
Didn't SC2 sell exceptionally more on the GameCube than the Xbox and PS2 versions anyway?

It looks like jagged ass.
It looks like a half-assed jagged ass.
They didn't do online play because they don't think people want it... which is partially true about PS2, online gameplay for that system brings me back to the long ago days of trying to make your modem work.
I wanted this on my Xbox or my Gamecube, preferably Xbox so I can play it over the internet.
Oh, and quit being such rabid fanboys to realize it's just another layer of polish and they have yet to implement online play... which makes Namco about 2 years behind everyone else, and SC is their only good fighting game.

Hmm, SC haters are not PS2 (we have the game anyway) and PC gamers (huh, fighting games?).
Haters are mostly Xbox (online, jaggies, fuck i'm stuck with DOA etc) and to some extent Cube gamers (what is left for us, sob).

Yes, the Cube version did move the most copies, it was nearing 550,000 the last time I saw, the PS2 version had around 475,000, and the Xbox with 390,000.
I saw this in a real interview, I'm not exaggerating...the main producer of the series...officially said that "porting the game to three systems, and incorperating 3 different guests characters was a lot of work. I don't like doing the same things twice, so we thought it would be better to dedicate SC3 to one platform."
So, I guess they don't believe in the mind-blowing aspect of "if you go the extra mile, then you'll be successfull for your troubles"
While I don't mind a whole much it's on the PS2 exclusively, since I own that system, I opted for the Cube version of SC2, because Heihachi was lame, and the PS2 is jag-city. It still sucks for the huge ammount of Cube fans, and Xbox fans, I think SC2 was the highest selling Japanese-made game on the Xbox after Ninja Gaiden.
I'm a huge SC fan so I'd buy this regardless of what system it hit for. In all truth though, am I the only one who is really leery of online play? I picked up DOA Ultimate just for the online factor and it blows. Bad. Same with the Street Fighter collection. I would MUCH rather they make a solid offline experience that i know is going to work rather than spoil my online tastebuds with some laggy piece of garbage that makes me wish I had never even thought of purchasing it.
And, again, graphics don't make the game any less solid of a fighter. Yes the PS2 has the worst of the bunch when placing it SC2 alongside the Cube and Box versions, but I mean come on. That's like not picking up Startropics ever because the cut scenes are poor quality. Whatever.

No, that's more like Star Tropics 2 coming out only on a system with worse graphics. Though it's a difficult parallel, as only real competitor at the time (Sega Master System) had slightly better graphics, so I can't form a proper analogy. So I'll just answer what you were saying.
You're right, graphics shouldn't be a big issue as far as gameplay goes. The only problem is, gameplay-wise Soul Calibur 3 will be largely identical to the last game, and after all this time, shouldn't it be online? Oh that's right, they took it out because Sony got all pissy so us Xbox gamers had our online feature stripped out instead, just to make it "fair" to everyone with another console. Also, my complaint about the graphics is still valid. If I played Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox for example, why should I be expected to play a graphically inferior sequel on another console due to nothing more than an exclusivity contract? Answer: I shouldn't. Which is why Namco can go without my business for this title.
But hey, it'll still be a good game, go and pick it up. My complaints are still valid for my own reasoning, but as long as you have fun with it, at least someone is. Just try to understand why other people will have a problem with this.

You guys seriously need to try street fighter or dead or alive on x-box live before you say anything about omitted online play.
IT SUCKS HARD. It's like a whole new game because the timing is off, look, a fighter that runs at 60 fps will need a maximum of 16ms ping to have any sort of synchronized gameplay so you can forget online fighters until we all have fiber optics.
To say that Sony is the reason Soul Caliber has no online gameplay is very naive and ignorant coming out of a person who boasts a video game collection worth $12703.97.

Ha, you want bad online. As far as bad goes the worst of them all is Guilty Gear XX on the X-box. That game is simply unplayable. DOA I can live with, street fighter I avoid, but GGXX you just can't do. Which saddens me because it is my most favorite fighting game series of all time, I went out and Bought an X-box with a copy of GGXX, in the process trading in my PS2 version of GGXX just to get the online. Worst mistake ever! The X-box controller is crap for fighting games period, and the whole reason I bought it for you can't do. With all online fighters failing I have drawn only one conclusion. Don't play fighters online! Its not about beating someone you don't know, its about kicking your friends ass and then laughing at them, Face-to-face. Thats the important part.

I agree with your points except for the online element. In all honesty sure, it wouldn't have hurt for them to have tried it out (though this would have, obviously, been better over LIVE) because it's pure speculation to say it would have just outright sucked, but I haven't had a good online experience with a fighter yet, so - personally - I could care less that they didn't include it. To me, that's actually the smarter of the two decisions.
And the Startropics analogy while poor, was more of a simple graphical one. It just bothers me that it seems graphics have, as of late, taken center stage over an engaging experience. I would argue the Calibur series is one of the best out there, hands down. The fact that I still play all three is evidence of that - and, too, there are enough tweaks between 1 and 2 to show them as different games; it seems the same is going to hold true for this step. Anyhow, it is then interesting to me that if someone likes a particular title and it would come out for a system they own (we're talking an exclusive situation here), that they wouldn't pick it up because of the way it looks. Compared to what a good deal of us grew up with (Atari, NES, etc), anything put out these days is gold. I'm not saying that I ain't surprised, at times, by what I see (that Stargate game looks a bit....off, lets say), but I get somewhat confused when graphics will make or break a title for some. This is why a part of me would argue that what that guy from EA said a few threads over about the graphical element of a game makes sense. We seem to be getting to the point where nothing will impress. They could motion capture real people in armor holding giant swords and there would still be complaints that it looks jaggy.
It's just a personal pet-peeve I guess. I'm not saying your complaints aren't valid in any way. They are. Maybe this is me getting sick of the overall way the gaming community seems to be moving, as of late. Instead of trying to find something good in a game that people (should know) is going to be a blast, they find something to pick at, and this isn't just for SC. Almost every other new-game thread has a bit of a hijack into the graphics department and rarely is it a positive conversation.

I have to admit also that i have yet to see a decent online fighter. DOA Ultimate on the Xbox was just unplayable for me. It's not the same. The timing and everything was just off. I tried to get used to it but couldn't. Online fighters which play right are not here yet.
Still i have to admit i'm pissed that this is only PS2 only. I wouldn't be able to play the PS2 version anyway because i'm used to the graphics of my Xbox version of SC2.

I'm well aware of the issues some people run across with online fighters and latency issues. Personally I don't encounter them that much (except for Capcom vs SNK 2 EO for some reason....). Yes, though, latency is a crucial issue with fighters more than any other title and it can suck really hard if there's an issue. Though in my experience, my online fighter games play just fine, could be because I have a great net connection.
With regards to Sony and the online cancellation, oh how quickly we forget. Back when the game was still under development, rumors were being flung around about the online compent (which originally was going to be on both the PS2 and Xbox) which was under development for some time, this then was cut down to just the Xbox, as they were having difficulties getting it working properly on the PS2 for whatever reason. Then after some quiet time, it was revealed that online play had been cancelled and that the game was being released (as if it was the only compent left they were working on, otherwise the game was complete).
This was rumor mill, but at the time it was quite well known (and I'd still imagine it to have quite the grain of truth to it) that because they couldn't give Sony online-play, Sony paid them off/asked them to drop the compent entirely, this also seems be even more reasonable once they announced the Sony exclusivity deal for SC3.
Either way, like I said, take what you will from this. It's obvious you love this fighter and that's a good thing, get excited and play the hell out of it. I just have my own reasons for not wanting to pick it up, which are valid.
(BTW, please don't make shots at me being naive and ignorant because you didn't know all the facts. That was extraneous and not necessary to your response, it just makes things personal. Also, FYI, my collection is much larger than that, I just haven't spent time adding everything to it yet, but again, that doesn't make a lick of difference. Want to compare cock sizes while we're at it? Because again, it's not relevant to the conversation.)

My opinions are probably a little jaded because SC2 turned out so much like the original, just with a fresh coat of paint on it. Part of me is almost assuming that's all they're going to do again, in which case it seems really silly to downgrade the graphics is all. However, I could be completely wrong about the game, maybe it'll be a breakthrough and have all-new gameplay/content out the whazoo. I'll have to wait and see, but I'm definitely not getting excited at what I've seen so far (a kinky bluehaired chick with her tits flopping out, swinging around a giant metal ring-blade).

In answer to the one saying PS2 has the best library of games, theoritically you're right. THey have a ton of good games, and the best of the RPG's, which is what I like, were exclusives. Trouble is, only the more current games are around in stores. A friend of mine bought a PS2 and we went looking for the games , about three months ago, that I had read all those great reviews of (ffX, dark cloud, ICO,shin something nocturene, suidoken 3, not 4). Not a one was in the store, and have seen the same at other stores. I had thought about buying a used once the price went down to a hundred, but if you cant get the better games, why bother?

Um, not sure how you can limit MS exclusives to just Halo, if you are comparing to consoles and not the PC, because KOTR and Morrowind were 2 of the best RPG's on any platform over the past three years, not to mention Jade EMpire and Fable all of which wre only Xbox.
