The article says quite a bit about his life and legacy.

Before anyone else says it....
"I guess someone beamed Scotty up..."
My god.... Doohan died of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease at his home in Redmond, Washington, this morning, the Associated Press reported, citing his agent Steve Stevens. His wife was with him, AP said. The actor also suffered from Parkinson's disease, diabetes and lung fibrosis and used a wheelchair.
The poor guy.

What a ton of shit to deal with right up to your death, at least he's not suffering anymore.

Wow.
He was hit with almost every nasty condition and/or disease known to man, it seems. I never knew he was in such bad shape...
It's for the best that he died, though; it's not like he really had any sort of life at that point, anyway.

Sad to see. From my friends that went to Trekkie conventions, he was supposedly the most approachable and friendliest of the bunch.

I saw him a few years ago a convention (I was young and it was a free trip to LA) and he was doing pretty poorly then, I'm suprised he lasted till now. Really nice guy though, it's always sad when a good person passes away.

Scotty, named after Doohan's grandfather, was a mechanical wizard who could fix dilithium crystals with safety pins and bail William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk out of scrapes. He would shout in a Scottish brogue, ``Captain, she can't take any more.''
Can't we cross-process the routers from the energy modulators and bring him back to life?
"She's given all she can Captain, she can't give any more!"

Man, I am so sad about this. I met the guy several times, and he was always very nice. I hope he's resting peacefully now.
Nice guy. I met him years ago when he was out promoting Star Trek IV.

Met Mr. Doohan at a convention in Atlanta in the late '70s, before the first movie came out. He insisted on going down each row and each seat and shaking the hand of everyone who attended his session. Walter Koenig was there along with William Shatner, but neither [especially Shatner] was as friendly and classy a guy as Mr. Doohan. :(

I loved the guy... but did you have to post him in a red shirt?

Very disappointing. He added a lot of "character" to the show.

Whops! I didn't even realize the red shirt thing. Sorry about that. I'll find another.
Edit : Damn it. I looked all over and all pictures of him from the original series has him in a red shirt.

Is anyone really suprised a redshirt was the first cast member to die in the 21st century?
Anyway, R.I.P. Jimmy.

(cries)
I remember back in the 70's I had the Mego dolls, and Scotty was my favorite... the Klingon came with a cool RED phaser (as opposed to the light blue phaser/tricorder Kirk's gang came with) and I swapped it with Scotty's so he could have "the best stuff".
I surprised Doohan lasted as long as he did, but that doesn't make me any less sad about his passing.
Time to bust out with "Relics", I think.

It's his time. He lived a good, long life, there's nothing to be sad about.
RIP to him and everyone who passed away recently.

Well, that is a shame. Sounds like he was in pretty bad shape though, so it might have come as a welcome relief to him.
On a lighter note, I'd say OSHA might want to take a closer look at their dylithium-handling guidelines.

When I worked at Toys R Us in Bellevue, he came in one time looking for his action figure. I think he was buying it for a nephew or something.
I had meant to try to find out where he lived since he lived close and check out his home, but I guess I'm too late....Sad day indeed.

A harsh blow to old school. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a con back in the 80's. Helluva man. We've lost one of the great ones. :(

Yeah when I heard the news it caught me off guard, like others I didn’t know he was in such bad shape. I guess I wouldn’t mind leaving behind a legacy (of sorts) like he did. There is no substitute for the phrase “Beam me up Scotty” seriously “Beam me up Evil”??... just isn’t right.
Not to be morbid but hopefully the family uses the opportunity to create a really good epitaph. There will undoubtedly be occasional trekkies paying their respects and what a great way to have them smile and remember.

Damn, somebody up there really wanted him to beam up.
Even though I haven't seen him on anything in a long time, I still feel like I've lost a friend.
One of the best things about the old series - he got some of the coolest lines. Straight up guy according to those who knew him. It's a shame he was in such pain before he went.
Our loss, Mister Scott.

I was going to say that DeForest Kelley ('Bones' McCoy) died in '99, but you specified the 21st century, didn't you? :o
James Doohan was indeed one of the nicest Trek actors ever. At conventions I've met him, George Takei, Walter Koenig, and Brent Spiner. Scotty was the most approachable of the bunch.

Hell no!!
If you had the unfortunate accident of wearing a red shirt on the Enterprise, you had a 50/50 chance of being on the wrong end of something. But if you were wearing a red shirt and your monkey ass was on an away mission..."What do you want on your tombstone?"
Doohan, you gave a lot of entertainment to a lot of people. Godspeed my man (which incidentally turns out to be warp 10, who knew?!?)
