View Full Version : Monday Blues - What did you actually play?

Monday again, and I had the worst case of the blues let me tell you. It might be that half bottle of Whiskey I slammed down after some beers with a mate, but showing him Bioshock for the first time called for a celebration.
What did your weekend look like? Played any games you planned to play? Any new purchases dying to be ripped out of their foil? Or did everyone play Halo 3 again?
Please share with the rest of us.
Next to that nightly Bioshock session, I mostly played Blue Dragon on hard. That game is going to take me longer than Oblivion if this pace keeps up.

Planned: Jeanne d'Arc.
Played: Jeanne d'Arc. Yeah, I did what I intended, and I'm loving the game more and more the further I get into it. This is definately a GoTY contender for me.
I also tried to play Yoshi's Island (GBA port), since I was in a platforming mood. I don't know what it is, but I still just can't get into that game. I love 2D platformers, especially from Nintendo, but Yoshi's Island just bores me to tears.
Finished Halo on Legendary, played some Brain Age 2 on my smoke breaks. That's it!
I also played with my new MIDI keyboard, which isn't really a game, but was pretty fun. I hooked it up to software versions of a Moog, a CV-80, a Rhodes, and a drum kit. Good times.

What I wished I was playing: PGR4, skate, Halo 3
Opposing Fronts is really a lot of fun, but they sure upped the challenge level compared to the Original Campaign. I keep getting my ass handed to me on mission 6 of the Market Garden campaign.

I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on Eternal Sonata. I know you've had good suggestions for RPGs in the past and I'd like to see how Eternal Sonata stacks up to others in your opinion. Have you played Eternal Sonata in Co-Op yet?

I've only sunk 5 or 6 hours into it (I blame Halo 3) but I think it's a good game. I do have some complaints about repetitive battles (which I found fun in the demo surprisingly) but so far it seems to be okay. I was a bit more psyched about it pre-release than I'm actually having fun with it now, but again, I just haven't had the time. And no, I haven't played co-op.
Of course, it's gorgeous. Characters seem interesting, though many of the voices annoy the hell out of me. The story is a bit different, and the premise is damn refreshing for a JRPG. I wish there was a bit more exploring, since the world is so beautiful. Little nitpicks persist, like your new armor and weapons are not reflected on your character in battle, just the default clothing and weapon. But the battle system is fairly deep, or becomes so as you upgrade the Party Level. I'm at Party Level 3 and I like how the battle system continues to evolve.
I love Tri-Ace games, so it's no surprise I like Eternal Sonata. It's far from perfect, and though I think the story has been a bit slow so far, I think it will pick up fairly soon. Like I said, I'm very early in the game. Oh, and it has been pretty easy, too.

Planned: MK:A on the Wii, some classic gaming, *maybe* start DQ8 on ps2.
Played: MK:A on the Wii - it was tough to get back into it after not having played in a month, some Dreamcast and Sega CD stuff, and a friend loaned me his old psp since he got a slim, so I picked up the Capcom Arcade compo. I played all the way through Magic Sword, and tried out a couple other games. I'm tempted to buy it from him, but I'm not sure how much I'd play it. Pretty good weekend of gaming.

It sounds like you and I are sharing the same wavelength on this title. I've been playing Co-Op with Mrs. Kamalot. I give her control of the main character and I just pick up one person in combat, usually the woman with the bow who can heal and provide cover fire support. In a sense, it allows Mrs. Kamalot to tackle a game that would otherwise feel too overwhelming (she's never finished an RPG before). Yeah, I don't have direct control, but I enjoy discussing the game and our options with her more than moving the little dude on the screen anyways.
I like the combat system a lot, especially the light/dark portions of it. Some of the dungeons feel a bit too stretched out for their own good though. Also, I am stupid-wealthy from taking a few photos. Is money ever an issue in this game?
We switched the voices to Japanese, and like it a lot more.

One of the negatives I read about the game was that money is WAY too easy to get with the camera. I found this out myself when I sold a few photos...I literally had enough to buy all the armor and weapon upgrades in the store with just my photo sales and then I still had a ton to spare. So, I decided not to take anymore photos as it was making it far to easy to fatten my wallet. I haven't checked out the achievement listings on GameFaqs, but I bet one of them has to do with pictures and how high of a score you can get with a good picture. I'll satisfy that achievement(s) and I won't use the camera again, at least not for selling photos. However, it would be cool if there was an in-game church where you could give donations, as I'd give a lot of my cheaply-gotten photo cash away, even if there was no reward, just to make my going less breezy.

I got my Halo 3 going, and have 995/1000 g's worth of achievements--I'm lacking the one where I have to get a quad-kill in Lone Wolves (I think it's called Overkill), and am so close yet so far from my dragon sword.
I actually also got back into Eternal Sonata this weekend. The game started off slow and kiddy, and is now a little less of both. Mostly it's the combat system that has kept me going. No, that's a lie--the game picked up ever since I ran into Viola and her cute squirrel. I really enjoy her bow attacks, which multiplies damage over distance.
I think I'm on the brink of being a bona fide Pheonix Wright fan, as well, plodding through Justice for All this weekend. Trials and Tribulations is an all but certain purchase for me.
Didn't get a PSP, decided there weren't enough games to my interest, trumping everything else the system has going for it.

How are the save points spaced? A long dungeon doesn't bother me if the save points are there so you can take a break. And is the demo co-op as well? That'd be a good way I could sell buying the game to my wife. :)

The demo IS co-op!
The option is difficult to find. I think it is in 'Y' Menu > options > Right-Bumper to switch screens > Change the control of the party members (but make sure the other controller is on first)
Also, make sure to log into a profile on the 2nd controller to get the achievements for everyone.
The combat system starts very simply, and eventually becomes more difficult. This was a great way to get the Mrs into the game. It slowly ramps up, and keeps challenging her. Yes, sometime she may make a daffy decision, but I'm patient knowing that if she can learn how to play RPGs then we can have a lot of fun together.
Save points are MOSTLY really good. Every so often I find myself NEEDING a sdave point only to have them nowhere to be found. For the most part they are fine though. Your mileage may vary.

Repeated the same 45 seconds of Halo 3 about 35 times. Stupid Wraiths.
I got my Halo 3 going, and have 995/1000 g's worth of achievements--I'm lacking the one where I have to get a quad-kill in Lone Wolves (I think it's called Overkill), and am so close yet so far from my dragon sword.I got my overkill by accident, but it hasn't registered with the Live servers!!! WTF. I was playing 4-player ranked and I just happened to come up on an entire team- I shot, melee'd, shot, melee'd through all four of them! Best Halo moment ever.
Oh in addition to Halo3 and Brain Age 2, I played some Half-Life Episode 1 (finally) and Metroid Prime: Hunters (disappointed).
EDIT: Hmm. The description for Overkill says it's only for ranked free for all- but I distinctly saw it give me an Overkill medal in a 4 vs 4 ranked game. I guess the Overkill medal and achievement are not the same.

Halo 3.
Started a week late due to me conveniently scheduling my holiday to Sunny Portugal the same week it was released. I did get me one of them there Legendary editions though, although that was guaranteed, what with working for GAME n'all.

How is that? Seems like it might be a fun little rental, or $20 game, but I'm not dropping $50 on it.
I'm renting it and find it to be a simplistic-looking but fun mindless beat-em-up. I wanted to try the controls which are entertaining, but not precise.
It sounds like there is a 6 hour story mode and... that's it. Think of it like Heavenly Sword played by swinging around the Wii remote, take out the pretty graphics, the twing-twang, the swelling musical score and just about anything else that made heavenly sword stand out. What's left is big, linear levels, lots of baddies, a decent moveset, and a few neat upgrades. Boss battles have been a notch above the rest, and there are a number of them too.
It isn't BAD, but it definitely isn't anywhere near good. It is just kind of... there. It is playable, and mildly entertaining without being special in any way beyond the fun of swinging the Wii remote around, chopping up baddies. It almost feels like it is the developer's first game. I don't know if that is true, but it gives the impression.
I suggest anyone rent it who has a desire to play with the controls, but I couldn't recommend it any further than that.
I was away for the weekend so all I got to play was a whole lot of Jeanne d'Arc. It keeps on getting better and better.

I had been on this quest to finish all of my old Xbox games before getting a 360 and I finally beat my last one, Vice City, last week. With all the Halo 3 buzz and the realization that, although I had played the first two plenty I didn't own either game nor had I beat either game's single player campaign I went out and grabbed copies of both on Saturday and spent quite a while playing Halo 1. Hopefully I'll polish it off during my next sit down and start on 2...

Tri-Crescendo is a splinter group of Tri-Ace, founded by a former sound programmer from Tri-Ace. The fact that their logos are almost identical does lend to the confusion.
Grr... all this talk of Eternal Sonata drives me nuts, given that I've been at the in-laws for the the past week and have only had my DS and PSP to keep me company. I just want to finish Halo 3's campaign before I can get back to ES in a big way.
Everything Kelegacy & Kammy have said is true. I've found the save points to be almost TOO plentiful, but I am still in the second chapter. That said, aside from the fact that the battles can get a bit repetitive, it's a lot of fun and it's an absolutely gorgeous game.
Anyway, I planned to play Phantom Hourglass after finishing the 3rd case of Phoenix Wright: Trials & Tribulations and also put some time into Jeanne D'Arc.
Played? An incredible amount of Chibi Robo: Park Patrol after finishing the 3rd case of Phoenix Wright 3, as well as a bit of the 4th case of Trials & Tribulations. Phantom Hourglass got about 3 minutes of play as opposed to Park Patrol that had me draining my DS batteries two days in a row... something that NEVER happens.
I also put some time into Jeanne D'Arc. I'm not as far in the game as I'd like to be, but I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm just afraid that the game will gather dust once I get Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSP.
I also put a bit of time into Crush on the PSP. Very cool little puzzler.

Resist that urge to pick up FFT before you finish Jeanne. JDA gets very, very good once you get further into it, and it's probably the best game of it's type since FFT first came out. Really, you'll be missing out on one hell of a game if you set it aside.
I won't be getting FFT myself for a couple of weeks, since I don't see Jeanne getting put down any time soon. I normally don't play through post game stuff, but I know I'll be doing it with this one.

You're talking to the guy who on September 24 was laughing at people who were excited about Halo 3 and on September 28 was walking out of a record store with a copy of the Limited Edition and a case of self-loathing. The guy who figured he'd wait to get Phantom Hourglass until sometime next year and on Thursday of this week was seen walking out of the local shop with a copy in his hands. The guy who had a brainstorm at noon on a Monday a few weeks ago about how he could get a PSP without having to spend money and 4 hours later had convinced his wife to let him trade in a plethora of games for the system.
And those were both games (and a system) that I was interested in trying but wasn't terribly excited about.
Final Fantasy Tactics was the first PS1 game I ever bought. EVER. It's also the game I've been trying to beat but never have the time to finish, no matter how much I'm in love with the Job system. Having it portable with the enhancements is what I need to finish the stinking game!
Of course, I might end up flipping back and forth between the two. Jeanne is rather nice (working on the Orleans campaign right now) but it needs JOBS!

Haha, yeah, I know what you mean. I used to do that all the time. Hell, it's how I have a collection of around 450 games sitting around my apartment. But really, I just got sick of never finishing anything. I had a backlog of games sitting on my shelf of nearly 50 games at one point, all games that I'd love to play. This year I started a thing with myself that I'm just not buying a game for a system until I finish the last game I was playing on it. It saves me a ton of money, and I get a lot more enjoyment out of my games.

I adopted a similar philosophy regarding my gaming last year. I just stopped buying and started playing. Cleared up my backlog on Gamecube and PS2 and started into the new stuff. It gives you a sense of accomplishment when you can look at your shelf full of games and say "yup, I beat that, I'm done with it, I got my money's worth."

I would be happy if no new games were released for a year. I'd actually get the chance to complete a large portion of my games (or at least spend a decent amount of time on them) and my bank account would finally know what it means to not be in the negative all the time!
I'm going on a game-purchasing embargo over the winter while I'm on parental leave. I'm hoping I'll actually have time (after looking after two kids all day and then watching all of the winter TV shows) to get to work on the stacks of JRPGs that I own. I came to the realization a few weeks ago that I own too many JRPGs and until I start finishing a few, I can't justify buying the obscure NIS and Atlus games that I'd like to get.
I really should just go to the shop today and pay off Mass Effect & Assassin's Creed & Professor Layton and then only go when they call me to tell me my games are in. No more impulse buys! That must be my motto.

I finished up Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. This Fire Emblem definitely felt easier than the first GBA one to come stateside.

I totally empathize with the urge of impulse buying. I think the disappointment of the ending to FF7 cured me of that years ago, though the subsequent hundred hours of experience and massive profit gained from owning a Greatest Hits version of FF Tactics shortly thereafter was some consolation. I was tempted to buy Bioshock, but I never finish FPS games. This weekened I played demos of Jericho, Dirt, and Overlord, three quality games worth my ten bucks in twelve months time.
