Last week I was invited over to Rockstar Games to take a look at The Warriors, a game based on Walter Hill's 1979 movie about the New York City gang scene.

I got to see the latest PlayStation 2 build. The game is set for PlayStation 2 and Xbox release later this year.

The fighting dynamic is rather impressive, with punches and kicks being varied and suitably weighty. The sound plays a great part in this, with bone-crunching effects adding measurable to the sense of brutality. As demonstrated to me by a Rockstar rep, the context sensitive fighting seemed very fluid, with opponents being slammed into walls or stamped on when down.

When more of your gang mates are around there's a chance for co-operation. Grab an opponent in a half-nelson and another Warrior will take advantage and beat the poor sap senseless. So far, so funky, what we have is a Streets of Rage for the modern generation. But the game has more tricks up its sleeve than mere pugilism.

You can read the whole preview of The Warriors over at Boomtown (http://ps2.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=8748).

Based on the 0 replies this post has gotten, I guess I'm not the only one that doesn't give a crap about this game.

I'm sorry (I'm not sorry at all), but a beat-em-up based on a property no one even remembers (cue all the people who do) just doesn't get me excited.

I'm at least going to be renting this because it is The Warriors. I'd even proudly rent a beat-em-up game based on Prayer of the Rollerboys. Corey Haim represent.

I'm not a fan of the "franchise" (if you can call it that), but I have a few friends who are. Still, I'm not sure what to think of this game. It's been in development for so long too, and with nary a peep about it.

Yeah, this really seems like a pet project greenlit by a manager who was a fan of the film. MTV is actually remaking the movie. Why bother doing a game version of the old one?

Because the old one is clearly going to be better than anything MTV touches. Are you kidding me?

How many old movies are they going to dig up to develop as games?..

Despite having never seen the movie and knowing little about it, I'm more excited about this than The Godfather: The Game.

Yea, a story posted at 6 in the morning didn't have any replies by 9 in the morning... for shame!

And just because you were still in diapers when some of us were enjoying movies doesn't mean you are the arbiter of what "most" people will be interested in. I'm pretty sure this game will do fine without your business, considering Rockstar can probably market anything as "from the makers of Grand Theft Auto" and proceed to print their own money.

I'm actually pretty excited about this. A new beat-em-up for this generation? Finally! I don't know about you guys, but I lived and breathed beat-em-ups in the early 90's arcades. And Streets of Rage is probably my favorite genesis game of all-time. I've shamefully never caught the film, although I've been meaning to, but consider me giddy.

I registered just for this post.

How can they make a game out of a movie where they only fight one fight? It seemed to me like the warriors were about the biggest pussies I'd ever seen.

The movie was awesome, because of the really really bad dialouge, but how can you play bad dialouge? I don't have very high hopes for this game.
