Despite Xbox 360's general failure in Japan, Halo 3 has outsold all other games (http://www.megatonik.com/2007/10/04/halo-3-bestselling-game-in-japan-last-week/) from September 24th to September 30th. Here is the Japanese software sales chart:

[Platform] Game - This week’s sales/ Overall sales

1. [360] Halo 3 - 59,000 / NEW
2. [DS] Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Toki - 55,000 / 440,000
3. [PSP] Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII - 54,000 / 649,000
4. [DS] Tamagotchi Petit Petit Omisecchi Minasankyu! - 54,000 / NEW
5. [DS] Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Yami - 46,000 / 389,000
6. [PS2] Bleach Blade Battlers 2nd - 31,000 / NEW

Dear god. Halo 3 beat out a Tamagotchi game and a Yugioh one in Japan all new releases. This is madness.

It's a bit of a misnomer, though. If you add up the two versions of that Pokemon game, it sold almost double Halo 3. And the Pokemon game has been out for what, months probably?

I'm a realist, I never expect Japan to make an American console #1. But it is kind of heartwarming to see some of their gamers appreciate our titles as well.

As slow as the week was, that is still extremely impressive numbers for an american FPS in Japan. I've heard the translation / Japanese voice recording was actually really well done though.

Has anyone seen any Japanese Halo ads? they must have had a pretty good marketing push to get those numbers.

Haha, I was wrong (and deleted my post) before you responded. I thought they were Diamond and Pearl. They are actual new Pokemon Dungeon games (the spin offs where you play as Pokemon). They came out at the beginning of September, this year, apparently. My bad.

Still... the multiple versions of Pokemon are considered one game, usually. So it sold half, really. Still, that's great!
That said, it's kind of sad... the biggest Xbox 360 game of all time, still only sold worse than a few week old Pokemon spin off.

I have no idea what you trying to say, but if you mean I don't like Halo 3 because it's popular, that's ridiculious. I think Halo 3 is pretty great (though not as great as the majority of the reviewers apparently). All I was saying is that the numbers look a lot less impressive when they are put into perspective.

Depends on your definition of "did well".
If 56k sales, of the most popular game on the console, is "doing well"... maybe.

It sold well for a 360 game, in Japan, yes. As you can see, that isn't saying much... as it's 56k...

Now if it keeps selling at that amount, and expands the amount of 360 owners there, then I'd be impressed. As it is right now, it's THE 360 game to own, and it only sold 56k units in its first week, compared to MILLIONS everywhere else. I wouldn't call that much of a success.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's still great that it sold that "well" in Japan... but that's NOT very good for THE biggest 360 game ever to come out. See where I'm coming from?

drakkarim

see you're still downplaying it

56,000 compared to everywhere else of course is not going to sound like a whole lot, duhhhhhhhhh.

the way I see it is, a game that's not made by a japanese developer on a non-japanese console is getting a bit of love, and this is the kind of growth i hope to see continue to florish with other games such as when fable 2 hits and mass effect.. and maybe, just maybe, squaresoft will come up with a new fucking idea in their head and turn the series around because the ff's are getting very stagnant in formula I'm sorry, I said it, may I be plagued by a storm of hail where ever I go

I'd really love to see all the art/cg of a squeenix + gameplay of bioware + the japanese touch put into a game personally though

I think that just shows how much Halo is liked. And I think that would mean something coming from Evil Avatar. Are you saying Evil Avatar is not as diverse and just closely mirrors the mainstream? I would say that is not true.

Yes there are many Halo posts, but there's a goddamn reason for it. And while each one of you complain about Halo posts I have to fucking read through all the whining about too many Halo posts.

Between this and that whole Kelegacy/Jack B fiasco, I don't know what the fucks going on with the community here. Even in that unecessary 'remove halo from the sidebar' thread(more drama right there), Serapth tried pointing out that most posts of users are 'off-topic' which all he really did is show the difference between the drama queens ruining the site and the actual gamers who come here to discuss gaming.

I'd just like to say I hate this attitude, saying the off topic threads ruin the site.

If it weren't for them, I wouldn't bother posting, quite honestly. There's a reason many of us have pretty decent friendships on here, and it's not always because we like the same type of games, not at all.

It's because of the off topic threads, where people find out they have a bigger common ground. That creates bonds, which is what ties a community together.

I played the first 2 in japanese and the localisation for both was of a much, much better quality than most localisations. There was a lot of work put into them, not just a shitty japanese front end menu (or nothing at all for some games). Not really a surprise but the halo franchise was pretty much the biggest seller on the xbox consistantly over it's lifetime along with Panzer Dragoon and Otogi.

That's not really saying much for the sales of any of those games though.

Did you miss the part of the OP which indicated Oblivion was "NEW" in Japan?

Here, just to help out:

9. [PS3] Oblivion - 27,000 / NEW

You have to stretch pretty far to downplay a 360 game even making the top ten in Japan, let alone being number 1. Whatever may have happened in other weeks, the 360 reigns supreme at least once, for probably the last time in Japan.

Very surprising. Regardless of the software dynamic going on as far as other game releases during this period and the like this is pretty big for MS. Who would have ever predicted 2 years ago after their Japanese launch that they would have any week at the #1 spot as far as games sold for a title? I know I didn't.

Maybe there is hope for Japan yet.

Furious Wang

just to point out, there should be some distinction on whether these sales in japan were to actual japanese. there's a lot of american military in that country and if its any thing over there like it is where I'm stationed, everyone of those soldiers and sailors bought halo 3. that should account for most of those sales

Not really. Launch week totals for each had the FF7 spin-off tripling Halo 3's numbers here, if i recall.

Still, even a month after a Final Fantasy series' release, it's pretty big news for Halo to nab top spot in Japan.

I use a mouse/keybord/Sixaxis combo, since you need to use the Sixaxis to easily open new browser windows, close existing windows, access the address bar, etc. But yeah, everything else I need a mouse/keyboard, I can't stand cellphone-like text typing.
