Ain't It Cool News comes up with the surprise of the century (http://206.127.26.196/display.cgi?id=20755) : a preview for the assumed terrible Doom movie shows it to be pretty good.
Confirmed in the movie: MARS! IMPS! HELLKNIGHT! THE BARON! PINKY DEMONS! GORE!
Also, it will be rated R.

If Harry Knowles likes it, it must suck. I'm sad now.

Not sure what to think of this. Ain't It Cool News always seems too excited about everything, so... eh.
All in first person? Interesting. But if it's overdone it could be annoying. I'm reserving judgement.

Its not all in first person - it sounds like its only one sequence that is like that. I think the little review said what they showed was about half of FPS sequence. It would definitely be hard to watch if the whole movie was like that. Select sequences need to be like this; transitions from one location to another, that sort of thing.

Who knows this movie might actually be entertaining, a first for a movie based off a video game. I think the only videogame movie that is remotely interesting is Wizard.

As long as I don't need to use a flashlight to watch the movie, I don't care.

I know it's not all. I meant all (or most) of the sequence described in that article. And I meant that if they overuse that in the film it could get annoying. If it's only every once a while it could remain pretty fresh and interesting.

Maybe if I dont get excited, I wont be dissapointed.
Maybe if I had thought of that before playing DooM III I'd be a happier person now.

You guys are all so fucking stupid. It's got THE ROCK IN IT. And you thought it would be bad. THE ROCK, people. SCORPION KING, for Christ's sake. That Rock. Jesus christ, it's like discussing films with my sister's kids.

Using The Scorpion King doesn't defend your argument. That movie was crap. I did enjoy The Rundown and even Walking Tall though. Haven't seen Be Cool.

Thank you Xenon, you've restored my faith in the human race.
I believe it will be the best video game adaptation to date. Which truly isnt saying much.

The Rock doesn't play the Doom Marine though -- that would be Karl Urban.
It's an action movie based on a video game. Having The Rock in it isn't moving the bar either way.

Whatever! If the Doom movie is gonna suck (which seems likely), it might as well be hilariously bad, and that is what Uwe Boll is good for.

Having seen Be Cool (a movie in which the supporting cast entirely overshadowed the leads) I can say that the Rock is actually a fine comic actor with a great sense of humour. We know he can do the physical stuff, so let's see if he can do something a little more serious.
Anyone else think that Vin Diesel and the Rock with a decent script and a good director could be the formula for the best cheesey action flick since the 80s?

Fantastic idea, BigJonno, might I suggest that The Rock as Watson to Vin Diesel's Holmes?

Have the Rock's movies been stellar? No - but they haven't been horrendous by any stretch of the imagination. And what I think is important to remember is that the weakness of those movies wasn't actually the Rock. I'm crossing my fingers still.

I am by no means a professional wrestling fan but 'The Rock' was really the only good thing worth watching for me at least in the late 90's (Stone Cold is funny too) up 'till his leaving the WWE. It wasn't his wrestling that kept me watching, it was his back-stage presense and charisma (on the mic). He's a hilarious guy (he ad-libbed tons) and a great actor. That's why I knew he'd be a good movie star. He's got charisma, and a sense of humour and machismo, that he hasn't even matched on the big screen yet. There's still a movie yet to come that will be his 'killer app.' (to steal a video game catch phrase)

Thanks for making all my coworkers look over and wonder what the hell was wrong with me while I spent five minutes laughing. JERK!
Yea, I thought The Rock was the only entertaining thing in "Be Cool", and I think despite his rather weak run of movies, he's a really good actor. I think he's a good replacement for Shwartzenegger, and maybe in the end he and Diesel will have a Shwartzenegger/Stallone kind of competitive thing going in action flicks. I think The Rock is well rounded enough he could do very well if given some good roles.

Here's another report (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news05/sdcc5.php) basically saying that yeah, it looks good.
The crowd responded in kind - they LOVED it. The film does look damn good fun and the presentation all went quite smoothly. This one might just be a hit out of the park. "Doom" opens October 21st in theatres.
Dwayne Johnson's a fun actor to watch. I've pretty well enjoyed all of the movies I've watched with him in it (with the exception of the Scorpion King, which I've not seen).

Rock's stick work was the best in the business, why a lot of "smarts" (what they call themselves, the ones far too involved in the real life backstage antics and pretending they're experts when it comes to critiquing matches) still liked having him around as a main eventer even though his ring work wasn't stellar. He was a lot of fun to watch, and yes I know far too much about professional wrestling.
Incredibly cheesy action flick with Vin Diesel would be brilliant.
As for the film, even if it's not great it's certainly sounding like it'll be interesting to watch.

Id like to see Indiana Jones Goes Back To The Future. :)
as for the film, it sounds pretty awesome. The hallway scene sounds pretty nice, and we all know that this will be a mindless action flick. If you cant get passed that, and your expecting "Da Tacksee Dry Ver" or "Teh Scahfays" then you will be "teh p00n3d". :)
Cant wait for this trailer to surface. Then I can beat it back into the underground. >:P
This is actually great news, regardless of whether you trust Aint it Cool. First of all, this isn't from Harry at all, but nobody bothers to read source articles before posting. Google for Comic Con Doom Movie and you will see that this same story is going around everywhere from attendees of that convention.
Most of the Doom movie hatred centered on them not respecting the source material. This report shows that id software was behind the movie all along; that they are sticking with Mars, the monsters we all know and love, and Space Marines. That Kenneth Scott was making sure the art was true to the game, down to the computer consoles. That the monsters are going to be six-to-nine-foot practical effects by Stan Winston studios (!) who made Aliens, Predator, Terminator, etc... sweet!! And of course, there is a BFG.
The fact that we heard otherwise was just a good disinformation campaign to get all of us nerds riled up. Carmack and company have been laughing as we all pontificated on the merits of a Doom movie not set on Mars, and not using demons from Hell.
In other words, this Doom movie sounds like it could be as good as it can be, which is likely not great, but much better than we hoped for.

I have been reading through this thread trying to remember that movie's name!
So, if the Doom movie is going to suck, it won't be because it's diffrent than Doom the game.

I remember the creators comparing this to Aliens. That being serious action and fighting tons of aliens/monsters.
Sounds like they're telling the truth.

My friend actually attended Comic Con this year and he seemed pretty impressed with the Doom trailer/movie clip. From his description of it, it certainly seemed like it might be cool. *shrug* I'm sure it'll be online some time soon and we'll see for ourselves.

It sounds like they did good job setting up the change in perspective. If they handle the camera cues properly it could work quite well. First person should convey perspective well, especially showing how huge some of those enemies are.

I seem to remember his SNL episode being pretty good, during a bad period for the show (seems like all the time, doesn't it?).
I'd like to see Vin Diesel and The Rock in an $300 million action movie, directed by Michael Bay, with him required to spend at least half the budget on explosions. And bring in the Godzilla miniatures guys.

As much as I'm not a fan of wrestling any more, timing is one thing they had to have -- both physically and in the talkie bits. So I'm not so surprised by this.
Since his acting days started I've always liked the Rock.
Maybe cause I thoought he was an annoying tool as a wrestler. But when he was on SNL(when he was still wrestling), I thought he was quite impressive and he's been decent in all his movies. He's no master of the art, but he's much better than I thought a guy with a crooked eyebrow who likes to use goofy catch phrases could be.
edit: and I post my SNL comments before reading the ones previous to me, I'm not jumping on the wagon.

Anyone who watched professional wrestling... shut up all of you :p
And fuck has anyone even bothered to read this thread before posting? (not you Bone)
I'll give you that, Savok. I haven't seen pro wrestling since Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, George "The Animal" Steele and Ric Flair were popular.

Scary thing is Hogan and Flair are still around (last I checked anyway, and that was awhile ago). Every time Flair gets worked up you're terrified he's going to have a heart attack, never knew skin could get that red without damaging it in some way.
