View Full Version : Fatal Frame Shoots The Wii

One of the creepiest series of games this side of Silent Hill is Tecmo's Fatal Frame series. The games have an abundance of atmosphere, and can keep you on the edge of your seat in the dark like no others can. It looks like we can look forward sleeping with the lights on again sometime soon, as the next game in the series is currently being developed for the Nintendo Wii, according to 1Up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3163198).
Tecmo has been silent about Fatal Frame for some time now, but that doesn't mean the horror franchise has been forgotten. To the contrary, 1UP learned at Tokyo Game Show that Tecmo's enlisted the help of Grasshopper Manufacture to produce the next Fatal Frame game. And here's the kicker: it's for Wii.
Grasshopper will start on Fatal Frame when work on No More Heroes, recently announced for a US release via Ubisoft, has finished. Given that No More Heroes was developed on Wii, Grasshopper seems content on Nintendo's console.
It's good to see these games continue, and it's even better to see more mature content appear on the Wii. Hey, Tecmo, you know what other series you have that would be a great fit on the Wii? How about Deception?

That is definitely good news, these are some of the scariest games I have ever played.

Sounds great to me. I never got to play the original, but I hear good things.

Check out Crimson Butterfly. It is the second one, for Xbox, and is on the BC list. You can probably find it for super cheap now.

If I remember correctly, Grasshopper Manufacture was also shopping a PS3 game to publishers. I wonder what's up with that project? Great to see Grasshopper getting steady work though.

So it sounds like they were initially thinking of PS3/360, then switched to Wii. That's the first time I've heard of something like that, and actually I'm a little surprised we haven't seen more Japanese franchises sort of "defect" to Wii.

Fatal Frame scares the shit out of me.

Yay!! I'll be really looking forward to this. The second one was definitely the scariest of the series, but they've all been good. I think the third one would have been much better without the interludes in the "real world." Those seemed to cut the tension too much, allowing you to feel safe. Still a good game. I'll get it day one.
And somehow I'm not surprised Gorvi's a Deception fan. Never played it myself. But I had friends who loved it, affectionately calling it "That Stupid Trap Game."

Wow! Now that's something out of left field! But this is good news to me. I was always wondering when Tecmo would announce the next installment.
On a serious note, I always thought of Fatal Frame as an exclusive, third-party Sony exclusive. If anything, I was expecting it to be announced for PS3 more than anything. But hey, as long as there is a Fatal Frame coming, I am not complaining.

Grasshopper Manufacture...?
Isn't Suda 51's next project supposed to be for the 360? Is Grasshopper big enough to have two teams? Does the Grasshopper name mean anything without Suda at the helm?
Curioser and curioser...

My hope is that this game is a side-story, since it's developed by Grasshopper. They're great and all, but I hope the original team is making Fatal Frame 4 for the 360 separately.
I mean, whatever they do, anything with Fatal Frame in its name, I'll buy.

It's the closest thing to a "Saw" type game and I mean in that you set up elaborate traps/machines to kill people. I got Trapt for like $10.00 and it's fun as hell.

Oh, and anything I didn't like in "The Tormented", I'd rather not see in the Wii version. I rather it play like "Crimson Butterfly" if possible.

Killer 7 was weird and unnerving on it's own, I shudder to think what Grasshopper would do at the helm of the Fatal Frame franchise.

Hmm, I would like to see this in action. Fatal Frame's mechanic could certainly benefit from light-gun tech.

Yay. I enjoyed the first and second, even though I couldn't beat either's final bosses. Some of the hardest boss fights evar.

Im curious to see how the speaker in the wii-mote can be put to use in this if anything. Since something like that screams for use in a survival horror game.

Awesome news.
I'm surprised they announced this for Wii. Hopefully it's a sign of more normal games coming unless they decide to party/mini game-acise it

Bummer. I was hoping to play the next Fatal Frame in HD and digital 5.1. Discrete surround makes a huuuuge difference in Fatal Frame. I guess I might borrow a wii to give it a look. I won't own another Nintendo console until I have children.

i hope the wii pointer is your flashlight .... that would be so freaky.
this game is actually too scary for me. i can only watch someone play, i can't play myself.

I agree with the flashlight sentiments. I've been wanting that ever since the remote was revealed. When the flashlight is only as accurate as your hand's shaking, it's only gonna get more 'fun' once you're unnerved and jumpy.

You have the most fitting name ever, good sir! A toast to you! ;)

I think they said they were thinking about it.....
EDIT: It's mentioned in part of a Game Informer interview about Haze (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200709/N07.0913.1203.57923.htm?Page=1).
GI: You’ve always been pretty high up on the latest and greatest hardware, you’re rolling onto the PS3 with Haze, but some of your biggest fan base was on Nintendo’s consoles, because there weren’t a whole lot of shooters on the GameCube. Are you thinking about putting TimeSplitters on the Wii, as well? What do you think about making a first-person shooter for the Wii?
Doak: I think it’s a good thing to do, and I think we want to put it on the Wii. And I’m sure it’s possible to do a control scheme that works. Also, if you want to start a petition for remaking Second Sight on the Wii, I’d like to see that as well, because I think that game worked really well, [laughs] because of the manipulation stuff.

I think Second Sight is a good idea for the Wii.

Yeah, I think in a best case scenario we get a scaled back version with better controls. Worst case is we either get nothing at all, or a lame Wiimake.

I wonder if a horror game, because of the wii's controls, will feel more terrifying. It is moments like this that one misses an eternal darkness wii game.

Well, count me in on this one. I absolutely adored the first two games. I have the third, but haven't really played much aside from the opening sequence. One of these days I'll get around to it. But if they can even capture a third of the scariness of the second game, I'll be super excited.
Nice to hear the Deception love around here too. Trapt is pretty fun, but Dark Delusion is still the bestest.
