As I had posted earlier, I was selected to be the "official" Master Chief at the main Vancouver, BC Launch event. It took place at the Futureshop on Broadway and Burrard.
Unfortunately, due to me being in costume my pictures at this time are non-existent, however I should be receiving a couple copies of some from our PR rep. So for now I'll just give a small recap of what happened.
My day started off with a few hours in front of the TV cameras. Those clips will all be played later this week though so none are available. yet.
People started lining up around 8:00 with the peak levels hitting around 11:30. Various media outlets came through to cover the event, keeping me busy for photo / video shoots all night long.
I was in costume at 9:00 when the store itself closed and the official halo 3 tourney began. People in the lineup were given a chance to try out the multi-player portion of the game in an 8 v. 8 match with the winners getting free t-shirts and other swag.
I have managed to find one video of coverage of the event online Global TV Video Index (http://www.canada.com/globaltv/bc/video/index.html) - Click on the Halo 3 released link. In it there are a few scenes of me walking and shaking hands with the fans.
Just prior to the launch the Futureshop folks had me draw a winner for a free Halo 3 edition xbox360 as well as a Legendary edition copy of the game (hope his disc wasn't messed up).
My last performance of the night took place at 5AM when we showed up at the CFOX radio station (yes...they actually wanted me to dress up for that one).
I have to be honest though, as cool as wearing the Master Chief costume is, its a bitch to wear. The black jump suit barely fit so my neck still has pressure marks on it from it being too small. And it is impossible to see from with the helmet on after 3 minutes as it would fog up. Finally it had absolutely no airflow so by the end of the night I was drenched in sweat. The actual suit itself was made of tempered plastic and felt fairly sturdy (although I wasn't allowed to sit down with it on), even though it was probably a bit too short for my height (6'4").
One of the funny things was that the replica assault rifle part of the costume actually didn't make it across the border, it was confiscated by Canadian customs....I guess they thought it was too lifelike. On Tuesday last week on the way to another event, an undercover police officer pulled our car over because of the costume as well....and it wasn't in a jest mood either...he was serious.
Overall the night was a lot of fun and while it may not have been the huge media production that Bellevue and NYC had, it was a good time had by all and I would definitely do it again.
