View Full Version : Diablo and Starcraft on your handheld?
Blizzard ask readers if they would buy a PSP or DS version of Diablo II (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/nid/1099/) if a wireless enabled multiplayer mode was included.
Rumours that a handheld port of Blizzard's Diablo II is in the works have emerged after Blizzard sent out a newsletter asking readers if they would consider buying a Sony PSP or Nintendo DS (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/nid/1099/) version of if Diablo II featuring wireless multiplayer.

I would buy that so hard for PSP that shockwaves would echo through my wallet.

They could easily get this on Battle.net. I'd much rather have it on the DS, with touch screen and voice chat support, than a little prettier on the PSP.

Portable online versions of either of those games would be fun but I'd be concerned that the interface might not translate well since both of those games require a lot of mouse clicking and have lots of buttons.

The interface would prolly work better on the DS, but I don't have one. So I think the PSP would be the better choice for them. I mean...think about it.

This is the kind of western dev support for the advanced clicking interface of the portable DS Ive been looking for. Now if EA would consider doing a C&C on the DS I might just pick one up.

I'd rather not see a port of a game I've already purchased and played, but the fact that they're considering it is quite awesome.
I do wish, however, that this poll was on their main site so I could participate.

You had better believe I would buy a Blizzard strategy game for my DS. I'd even stop bitching about the lack of games :p Diablo II I'd probably skip, I just don't like Diablo games.

Want to know what I would buy Blizzard?
STARCRAFT 2 FFS!

I'd buy a vacuum cleaner if it has a Blizzard game included
Diablo 2, fuck yeah.
That is EXACTLY what the PSP needs. It would not work on the DS.

I'm guessing you didn't play Diablo I on the PS? The controlls for that were bad enough, without the added complexity of the Diablo 2 interface. How am I supposed to do accurate leap attacks with the PSP controls?

Yeah, because you know both games would work well with just an analog stick for controls.....</sarcasm>

This is the game that would sell me a DS. Love it. ALso, I believe the stylus could be used like a mouse again, like I think they are doing with age of empires, and all the interfaces could work.

What's the capacity on a DS cartridge/UMD disc? Wasn't Diablo II a 1 gig+ install?
I would buy the full game (and the expansion, if possible) with all content included. Diablo II was very fun.
Starcraft would be great, but I wonder how they would handle the interface/controls. Anybody who played it on N64 should know what I'm talking about.

Full game install which includes the cinematics and all the music, plus the expansion, is 1.87 gigs. Which Seems to big for the DS.

From a Gamespot article: (http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-11722-1231-x-x-x)
"Nintendo states that maximum card capacity is more than one gigabit, or 128MB in size."
And UMD Capacity: (http://www.mp3newswire.net/stories/5002/psp_review.html)
1.8GB capacity

Thats why you lower the quality a bit, or just cut some unnesissary things that nobody needs. OR...if this is possible....make it a 2 cartrige game...might be a pain in the ass tho....OMG! Ideas are flooding into my brain! and the dam is gonna blow!!

Its kind of funny to watch PSP users attempt to overcompensate for an obsolete control scheme by playing the UMD trump card. Not that there is anything wrong with the PSP, its a great console for one analog stick PS2 ports, just not so good for anything that comes from the PC. The DS on the other hand has a ton of potential in this realm and if the titles start to show up to take advantage of the stylus interface Im in.

Diablo II ran in 640x480 on the PC. The DS screens are each 256×192. That's a sixfold reduction in raw number of pixels, assuming the top screen is used for gameplay and the touch screen is used for controls. So slim all the graphics down by a substantial amount. Then allow for more highly-compressed sound and video, and it's just barely possible they could fit it on a DS card.
It's also possible that DS cards will get larger as time goes on. I can't imagine fitting Diablo II into a 128MB (1 Gbit) card, but 256MB (2 Gbit) seems possible and 512MB (4 Gbit) quite likely. That would mean it'd be up to Nintendo's semiconductor manufacturing technology whether Diablo II can fit on the DS.

I think they'd both work well on the DS. I'd certainly get Star Craft, and it'd probably make me take another swing at Diablo II (got disgusted in the 3rd act and gave up).

Diablo 2 would be hard to pull off on PSP because of the controls i personally would like to see both on DS because of the stylus(not to mention the fact that i dont have a PSP)

I agree with mostly everyone a DS port seems like the only logical step because of the touch screen. It acts as a mouse and solves the problem of all the mouse clicking and keyboard interface which can easily be translated through the touch screen. Selecting items and selecting skills and such with the stylus would be much easier then using the PSP's clunky analog and button only interface.
As noted earlier the DS also has the mic to allow chat and the Wi-Fi for LAN party style gaming as well. PSP as good as it looks on paper isn't very logical for the port of either of these games especially Diablo II.

Just a quick question out there for folks who have been able to try a lot of multiplayer DS out there. What is the effective maximum distance you can keep between machines?
I keep imagining it as little over 10 feet making most chat/mic options a bit redundant seeing as you can easily just y'know... talk and be heard.
Back on topic, I'll throw my hat in with those who would love to see this on DS.

First off, the PSP has WiFi as well. And I think that I would have to disagree with the Diablo II on PSP bit. I think Diablo II on PSP would be far easier than Starcraft. Starcraft would work fine on the DS, so would Diablo II for that matter. The touch screen as a mouse is good. But Diablo II could be ported in a similar vein as Untold Legends. You just control the character with the analog stick, and use the multitude of buttons for menu and action buttons. Not too tough.

I sit corrected, thanks I had my thought's that PSP would be Wi-Fi but wasn't to sure so thanks for the update.
