Reuters is announcing that Nintendo recently surpassed Canon Inc to become Japan's second most valuable company (http://uk.reuters.com/article/internetNews/idUKT1482820070925) traded on the stock market. This places Nintendo behind Toyota Motor Corp, the #1 most profitable and valuable automaker in the world.

Nintendo's Wii has so far outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 by a large margin since their launches late last year as Nintendo's strategy to expand the gaming population by offering easy-to-play but innovative games has proved a big success.

"At the Tokyo Game Show last week, Nintendo wasn't there officially. But there were a lot of software companies who are dedicating software to Nintendo platforms," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.

The future continues to look bright for the Japanese game company and it is expected that the holiday season will mark another success for Nintendo. In the quarter ending in June, Nintendo sold 3.43 million Wii units compared to Sony's 710,000 PS3 units.

Don't expect Nintendo to surpass Toyota any time soon. Even though Nintendo is in 2nd place, Toyota is worth about 3X what Nintendo is worth.

Nintendo needs to get into the automotive industry. Maybe put a DS in every Camry and Corolla....

I was looking at a Forbes list (http://www.forbes.com/lists/2007/18/biz_07forbes2000_The-Global-2000-Japan_10Rank.html) today, from March 29, 2007, that put Nintendo's market value at 34 billion USD. The article above lists their current market value at 8.39 trillion yen -> 73.2 billion USD.

There's probably some currency fluctuation involved, but still, that's more than double their market value in 6 months.

I do remember that they had a deal with Ford not too long ago, N64s were put into special edition WindStars. Problem is, no one bought WindStars.

I can just imagine how much trouble people will have trying to parallel park with a stylus.

This is terrific for Nintendo, but let's also keep in mind that the value of IP can fluctuate more than the value of actual, physical, tangible property (manufacturing plants and the like). I'm always a bit wary of the dangers of inflated values with stocks that offer little in terms of physical assets to sell off if needed. Such as Google, for example.
