File this one under amazing. IGN reports that a direct-to-video Futurama movie (http://dvd.ign.com/articles/634/634262p1.html) is in the works with the possibility of a second one to follow.

A lot of people dismissed this show after the admittedly weak first season. If you're one of those people, please watch from season 2 onward and enjoy one of the best comedies ever created.

Yeah definately. I just hope the movie establishes the same feel as the series.

OMG! If this is fo' real, I think I'm gonna pee my pants! I'm the hugest Futurama fan and my heart literally broke when I heard they were going to cancel the show.

First season had lots of Zapp. That alone makes it wonderful.

Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I thought the show was pretty great from the get-go.

Oh, and if Futurama comes back to television, everything in my TV world will be right again. :)

Personally I did find the first season pretty weak and stopped watching. I then got back into it later and found the writing was much improved.

Sweet. By season 3 and 4 it was one of the consistently best written comedies on TV, indeed. Real pity Fox decided to go axe it at that point.

Excellent stuff. Personally I found the 4 seasons of Futurama (even with the weak first season) a better series than the Simpsons 4 great series (4-8) sandwiched by a lot of mediocrity.

It's such a shame that it was never given the chance to develop a little bit more as the story arcs were really well written. It was like everything they couldn't do with the Simpsons they tried out with Futurama and it worked.

Well, I think the weakness of the first season can be contributed with the first few episodes which is natural for a lot of television. For example, in the pilot episode they tried out a few themes and dropped them real fast. And Bender wasn't really solidified with a personality until the fourth or fifth episode (plus his voice work was initially a bit shabby).

Heck, just look at MacGyver. A lot of the stuff in the first episodes of session one are cringe-worthy corncobbtastic, but who is going to argue against the series as a whole? Well, maybe some cynical asshole somewhere might try. :D

Anyway, Futurama is all-around high quality stuff. Intellegent jokes, and surprisingly satisfying plot. Even succeeding with good emotion at times such as the episode when Fry finds his old dog's fossil.

Not as biting, or outlandish as some other American cartoon comedies, but still good. :)

Wth?!
Weak first season!?
If anything 4th is weakest...
I hated the show the first time I saw ep one, but that was more to do with me being confused and disorientated after expecting a simpsons clone. A few years later I finally got back into it with the reruns on late night TV and it's now one of my favourite comedy series ever. My DVD set has been crazily overwatched and I deffinitely agree with the person above, Zap Brannigan is truly hilarious. But again, I really don't know what you're talking about with "weak first season", episodes 3 and 4 are 2 of the best episodes in the entire series.

But back on topic, this is indeed very awesome news. I bought the PS2 game in a bargain bin recently as I heard it was worth enduring the crap gameplay as the cutscenes pretty much made up a "lost episode", but sadly that was incorrect. The opening was hilarious, the ending was classic futurama, and there was nothing in between worthwhile at all, not to mention the fact that the game itself is frustrating, clumsy and boring. Was cool they had the proper voice actors though...

The first season to me was pretty slow. There are maybe two laugh-out-loud jokes in the pilot episode and the moon episode put together. The first season has a lot of visual gags that are maybe smile worthy but the real laugh out loud stuff is from season 2 onward. Plus I hate Bender's voice from the majority of the first season.

Some of the plotlines later on are just so clever and awesome. The parallel universe box, the fountain of aging, traveling back in time to roswell, the time skips. These are the best episodes of futurama and just thinking about them makes me want to watch some right now.

I never did care for football but this made me HATE it! Football always preempted Futurama on Sundays. And they wouldn't push it back, like they did The Simpsons, which is/was running out of steam, but is still their flagship show. I still maintain that was the death knell of Futurama. Show is deemed unpopular, show is placed in timeslot often preempted, show gets no ratings, show is cancelled. Fox sucks.

Futurama is the best written comedy cartoon series ever. The Simpsons is my favorite overall, but Futurama has a poignancy that was just starting to show. The episode with Fry's dog? Man, that makes me cry at the end! That's right, I said cry....

I've always seen the 4th season as the least funny myself, mainly because by that point it was getting a real sci fi element to it, the plots were more then just for laughs. Jurrasic Bark was the dog ep.

Just the least funny, Futurama was heading in the direction of full blown sci fi, were it allowed go there we'd have something rather special and unique. I fully expect the film to continue this, going deeper into the conspiracy thing involving Fry and the Niblonians.

Fry: "I got an idea for a sitcom."

Futurama was the best! Their science fiction was definitely aimed at intelligent geeks, which is more than you can say for anything shown on the scifi channel. The season episode called "Time Keeps On Skipping" in season 4 is among my favorite episodes of any televison show. I'd gladly pay for more Futurama!!

The Amazon women was fantastic, too.

I read an interview with Matt G about this once. The reason Futurama died is pretty simple, all of the really talented people on the simpsons were bored of working on the simpsons, so they wanted to move onto a new project. That project eventually became futurama. Fox was nervous that draining the talent from simpsons to an new cartoon that was even less general populance friendly (cartoons and science fiction) would just bring down both shows. Since Matt G had been the anchor of the network with the simpsons for so long, they couldn't tell him no, but they did everything they could to kill the show so that the futurama writers would go back to the simpsons after futurama was cancelled.

Way better than Family Guy. This show was a thousand years ahead of its time...

So freaking pissed over how Family Guy got revived and then they even have the nerve to create an almost carbon-copy of it, American Dad.

*sigh*

Oh well... at least I still have the full collection on DVD to watch again and again and remind myself how extremely stupid and ignorant TV network executives can be.

i love futurama and own all 4 seasons, but i understand why fox didnt love it the way we do.

it cost alot of money to produce each episode (like 4x as much as family guy), was made for an offbeat audience, and also got a crap timeslot.. just didnt add up for them.

i want to read the comix too, i hear theyre really good too.. would make great new episodes.

the genius and poignancy of jurassic bark is rarely seen on tv, (heck movies) let alone a cartoon.

Selma: That MacGyver's a genius.
Sideshow Bob: First of all, he's not a genius. He's an actor.
And second, he's not <much> of an actor.
Selma: [refusing to believe] You're lying! You're lying!
Sideshow Bob: No, Selma. <This> is lying.
